There is an
interesting parallel
between the subject of
the opera and
Tchaikovsky's life during
the year he wrote the
work (1877): in each
case, a letter provokes
fateful developments in
the lives of the
protagonists. In the
opera, Tatyana's love
letter to Eugene sets off
the tragedy, whereas in
real life, the love
letter of a pupil led the
composer into a marriage,
which lasted all of ...
three months. Tchaikovsky
took this doomed decision
without love, solely
because the circumstances
want it and because I
cannot act differently.
Certain allusions made,
for example, in a letter
of January 1878 to
Taneyev suggest that the
composer's personal
situation also flowed
into the work: I did not
want anything to do with
the so-called 'grand
opera.' I am looking for
an intimate but powerful
drama which is built on
the conflict of
circumstances which I
myself have seen and
experienced, a conflict
which truly moves me.
Partly for this reason
the composer decided to
call the work not an
opera but lyrical
scenes.Eugene Onegin,
conceived by Tchaikovsky
for limited resources and
a small stage, is the
most frequently performed
Russian opera today along
with Mussorgsky's Boris
Godunov, which represents
a completely contrary
aesthetic stance.

life-blood from its
poetic moments and the
symbol-laden portraits of
the leading characters:
the blind young Yolanta
is kept prisoner in a
paradisiacal garden by
her father who fears for
her purity and her
virginity and seeks to
protect her from the
adversities of the world.
To do so he orders
everyone to keep her
ignorant of the fact that
she is blind. A doctor
warns that she will only
be able to see when she
is ready to do so herself
no matter what fears
might result from a
complete experience of
the world. When the young
Vaudemont breaks into her
secluded world and the
two fall in love he frees
her from her ignorance
and explains the
significance of color and
light. It is through her
love for him that she is
finally able to see. At
the beginning of the work
Tchaikovsky depicts
Yolanta's dark world with
an introduction scored
exclusively for winds. It
is not until her
discovery of the unknown
world of love and sight
that Tchaikovsky uses a
warm string sound. This
is what many of the
composer's contemporaries
found disturbing about
the
opera.
Tchaikovsky
's Yolanta occupies a
special place in the
composer's operatic
oeuvre: for one it has a
happy ending an
apotheosis of light and
love with a religiously
stamped closing chorale;
for another it is one of
Tchaikovsky's few stage
works without any
reference to Russian
history. Instead the
work's pronounced
lyricism points to the
composer's closeness to
French culture. which
exerted a strong
influence on Russia in
the 19th
century.
The opera
was given its world
premiere at the Mariinsky
Theater in St. Petersburg
in 1892. It had been
commissioned along with
the ballet The
Nutcracker. Next to the
production by the
Munchner
Rundfunkorchester Yolanta
was also successfully
rehabilitated in a recent
staged production at the

player in the 1960s, my
work as a double bassist
with chamber ensembles
and small orchestras took
me all over the world.
This presented an
unparalleledopportunity
to scour libraries and
archives wherever I went.
Long before the advent of
the photocopier and
e-mail, research was far
more challenging than it
is today. Eastern Europe
was particularly
difficult to access,
withmanycollections kept
under lock and key for
all but a few hours a
week. One quickly found
colleagues who were keen
to share information
gleaned in passing, even
though they had no
specific interest in
one's own
particularspecialism (it
is so often the
peripheral topics that
fascinate as much as the
main subject under
investigation, and one
can quickly be
side-tracked into
political and social
issues that have only
slender bearing on the
job inhand!).
In
the early 1970s James
Brown, the then
sub-principal oboist of
the English Chamber
Orchestra with whom I was
working at the time,
stumbled across a small
collection of double bass
manuscripts at the
RoyalDanish State Library
in Copenhagen. They were
by Franz Anton Leopold
Keÿper (b. c.1756, d.
Copenhagen 7 June 1815),
a double bassist of Dutch
origin who worked as
principal of the Royal
Chapel Orchestra in
Copenhagen.Keÿper's son
was the bassoonist Franz
Jacob August Keÿper
(1792-1859). The
collection included a
number of concertos, some
chamber music, and
various naïve fragments.
Although hardly the work
of a Mozart or Haydn,the
style is characteristic
of the period. For an
instrument such as the
double bass, whose 18th
century solo repertoire
is largely written for
tunings that are no
longer in everyday use,
Keÿper's music is easily
approachablein its.

variable ensemble of
soloist, mixed choir and
instruments (minimum:
vocalist and organ).
Programme Note: When in
1975 I had finished
composing my 3rd Symphony
(begun in 1973), I wrote
three simple melodies for
two psalm texts by Ole
Sarvig: The Year and
Choral Hymn. These three
tunes were derived from
the same material as the
second movement of the
3rd Symphony and could be
harmonized together in
several different tempo
relationships at the same
time - like fractals -
which inspired me to
write several choral and
instrumental works in the
following decade based on
these melodies: Frost
Psalm, Winter Cantata,
Winter Hymn, Cantica and
others. One of these
'Sarvig melodies' is now
included in the new
Danish Hymnbook, under
the title Aret(The Year).
Ole Sarvig's poem Aret
(The Year) is Danish,
perhaps Scandinavian in
character, but its
symbolic atmosphere is
global (now snow is
covering the whole
earth). The basic
composition of this
cantata - based on
Sarvig's many verses -
was done by letting
soloist, choir and
instruments change in
feelings and moods: from
the almost silent,
inward-looking beginning
(I: Chorale dolorosa) to
a dancelike and happy
optimism (II: A heaven
germ on winged foot
thrust deep into the
earth its root), followed
by nightmarish tone rows
as the year-wheel of
fortune is turning (III:
Sacrifice - The Year) and
the temptations of the
snake (IV: In Paradiso) -
to the allegorical fights
between egoism and
altruism (V:The Cycle -
Autumn. Purgatory) before
the waiting for a
disaster- atmosphere at
the end of this choral
Odysse. Winter Cantata
was from the beginning
(1976) designed as an
open work, to be arranged
by different combinations
of soloists, choir and
(different) instruments.
The printed version by
Per Norgard and Ivan
hansen for soloist, mixed
choir and instruments
(obo, violin, trombone,
vibraphone/percussion and
organ) is from 1990. The
work is available in both
the (original) Danish
version (Vinterkantate)
and an English version
(Winter Cantata),

ser's note: My approach
to arranging this carol,
as well as the other
carols in Nordic
Christmas, was to look at
the text (originally in
Danish by Nikolai
Grundtvig, 1783-1872) and
its background to see if
there are new meanings
hidden in the material.
Perhaps there are
circumstances around its
creation or messages the
original authors were
trying to say that
somehow get lost in the
way they are interpreted
today. Lovely is the dark
blue sky is usually
performed as a lustrous
up-tempo carol, but
thinking of Grundtvig's
story and life, writing
this text between
episodes of severe mental
illness, and his vision
of a child looking at the
dark blue sky at night, I
made the atmosphere of
this arrangement more
dreamy, still and full of
wonder. I still wanted to
keep it childlike, with
the choir singing
tenderly and the soprano
solo is ideally sung by a
child. The melody was
written 'by an old man
who had never before
composed any music', as
stated in the 1853
hymnbook in which this
melody first appeared. It
is the only known
composition of its
writer, the
Norwegian-Danish Jacob
Gerhard Meidell
(1778-1857), who was a
captain in the Danish
Army and later a customs
inspector in Copenhagen.
The text was written by
one of the great Danish
hymn writers, N F S
Grundtvig in 1810. It was
written between a manic
and a depressive episode.
During a time of being
well, he wanted to write
about Christmas through
the eyes of a child. The
message is simple, as a
children's song with
storybook elements.
