My Eighth
and Ninth String
Quartets, begun in late
2017, are sonic cousins.
Akin to real cousins,
each piece exhibits
differing natures. They
were requested by two
ensembles that have
become asecond familiesa
to me: The Jupiter
Quartet of Urbana,
Illinois and the Amernet
Quartet based in Miami,
Florida. Their collective
dedication to, and care
for, our art remains a
personal and constant
are-fuelinga for me. The
quartets were
commissioned by, and
dedicated to, Margaret
and Philip Verleger of
Denver, Colorado.
Additional financial
support was provided by
the School of Music at
Stetson University,
Timothy Peter, Dean.
Quartet No.8 is laid out
in a classical
four-movement design. The
work does break somewhat
from conventional
tradition by often
placing quartet members
into soloistic roles as
the movement titles note.
individual The opening
piece presents at the
outset a three-note motto
which is turned over,
tumbled, and
energetically discussed,
primarily by a violin
duet. It is a duel. The
two players part company
only infrequently during
the movement's progress,
pausing briefly for other
commentary by their
alower cohortsa, the
Viola and Cello do not
argue, but abet their
friends' aeffortsa. The
piece's overall character
is fairly bright and
dancelike, closing in an
unresolvedastandoffa. not
Two principal
asound-objectsa stitch
the second movement
scherzo together: sliding
hands (glissandos) and a
plucked ashufflea
(pizzicato) - both
instigated by the (solo)
cellist. The others are
influenced - or are not -
by their aleadera, and
follow - or interrupt -
the cello throughout
their four-voiced
conversation. The third
movement (longest of the
set) is an elegy
dedicated to the memory
of a close personal
friend, the American
composer David Maslanka
(1943 - 2017). Its'
genesis is a simple
5-note melody derived
from my own name
(SaC/DaC/EaC/H). This
line commences in the
(solo) viola and is
obsessively uttered
without relief during the
movement's lamentations.
The closing movement
revisits much of that
opening three-note
material, but now dressed
up for the full quartet
to view. It is a slowly
accelerating romp which -
twice - cannot avoid a
nod to the Amernet and
Jupiter performers by
offering a humble bow to
the 4th movement of
Gustav Holst's PLANETS -
Jupiter: The Bringer of
Jollity. My quartet
serves as an honouring
salute of thanks for the
talent, respect, and
friendship of these two
young quartets. STRING
QUARTET No. 8 is roughly
22 minutes in duration.
It was written as an
homage to Franz Joseph

Since an
invitation to the Emerald
Isle, Harald Genzmer
(1909-2007) has been
fascinated with the local
tradition and culture.
Therefore, after the
songs 'Irische Harfe', he
wrote another cycle for
mixed choir at a ripe old
age: 'Lieder einer
Insel'. In three parts
with ten choral settings
altogether, the composer
tells stories from the
mythology of the Emerald
Isle in the Irish poems,
in the texts of old and
modern lyricists,
describes emotions,
desires, laments: from
'Weissagung Cathbads' to
'Lobgesang der
Gerechten', from the
bright 'Monch und seinem
Lieblingskater' to the
sad lament 'Das Lied in
einem Madchenherzen',
from the tender 'Anrufung
des Friedens' to the
contemplate 'Abendgebet'.
The freely tonal settings
range from simple,
chordal-homophonic via
declamatory to
expressive. Of
intermediate difficulty,
these choral miniatures
are suitable not only for
professional ensembles
but also for ambitious
amateur choirs.

instruments which are
normally doubled with
more regular members of
the orchestra: these six
strangers, now brought to

alto flute, cor anglais,
clarinet in Eb, bass
clarinet in Bb and
contrabassoon. They make
a motley group, diverse
in colour as in register,
and one of the tasks of
the piece sets itself is
to have them blend and
cohere, both together as
an ensemble and in
partnership with the
string orchestra (which
itself is used with
unusual variety and
subtlety). Another
evident task of the work
is to provide fine solos
for each member of the
woodwind sextet: bright
dances for the piccolo,
recitatives for the alto
flute, a stoical song
from the contrabassoon in
the extreme bass. The
work is cast as a single
movement, which begins in
the composer's
first-movement style of
rapid regeneration. This
is interrupted by slow
interventions, including
one for divided strings
which gives rise to a
sextuple cadenza for the
soloists. Out of this
comes a slow movement, or
sequence of short slow
movements, followed by a
dancing finale with its
own slow episodes.
Altogether this is music
of songs and dances,
heavily tinged with
Scottish rhythms and
tonalities: one might
think of a magic bagpipe,
having six chanters and a
drone of variegated
string texture.

Festival
Prelude ‘Ad
Excel’ was
commissioned by the AD
Concert Band, from
Solihull in the UK, to
celebrate their 40th
Anniversary in 2016. The
title, Ad Excel,
is a play on words: it is
Latin for ‘to
excel’ but also
celebrates the
band’s anniversary
as XL is 40 in Roman
numerals. The work opens
with a bright fanfare
with frequent changes of
meter. This leads to a
playful main subject,
played first by
woodwinds, followed by
full band. A bridge
passage leads to a legato
second subject, played
twice. The bridge passage
returns to introduce the
both main melodies in new
keys and instrumentations
before a coda, derived
from the opening fanfare,
brings the work to a
close.
Das
Stück Festival
Prelude ‘Ad
Excel’ wurde
2016 von der AD Concert
Band aus Solihull
(Vereinigtes
Königreich) aus Anlass
ihres 40-jährigen
Jubiläums in Auftrag
gegeben. Der Titel, Ad
Excel, ist ein
Wortspiel: Es ist das
lateinische Wort für
to excel“ (engl.:
hervorragend
sein“), bezieht
sich aber auch auf das
Jubiläum des
Orchesters, da XL die
römische Ziffer für
40 ist. Das Werk beginnt
mit einer strahlenden
Fanfare mit zahlreichen
Taktwechseln. Sie
führt zu einem
verspielten Hauptthema,
das zunächst von den
Holzbläsern und
anschließend vom
gesamten Orchester
gespielt wird. Eine
Überleitung führt
zu einem zweiten Thema im
Legato. Die
Ãœberleitung
kehrtschließlich
wieder, um die beiden
Hauptmelodien in neuen
Tonarten und
Instrumentierungen
vorzustellen, bis das
Werk in einer Coda, die
von der
Eröffnungsfanfare
abgeleitet ist, endet.
Festival
Prelude ‘Ad
Excel’ è
stato commissionato dalla
AD Concert Band, di
Solihull nel Regno Unito,
per celebrare il loro
40esimo anniversario nel
2016. Il titolo, Ad
Excel, è un gioco
di parole: è il
corrispondente latino di
“eccellereâ€
ma celebra allo stesso
tempo
l’anniversario
della band dato che XL
equivale a 40 in numeri
romani. L’opera si
apre con una luminosa
fanfara con frequenti
cambi di tempo. Questa
sfocia in motivo giocoso
principale, prima suonato
dai legni, subito dopo
dall’intera banda.
Un passaggio che funge da
ponte porta poi a un
secondo tema in legato,
suonato per due volte. Il
passaggio ritorna poi ad
introdurre le due
melodieprincipali in una
nuova tonalit prima della
coda, che riprende la
fanfara di apertura,
portando il brano alla
conclusione.
