rhythmic and propulsive
gallop that spins off
lyrical material as it
drives to a climactic
finish that is both
exciting and fun.The
piece opens with a robust
first theme, then
transitions on a rhythmic
figure spun off from the
opening material. The
opening section repeats
in variation with
different orchestration.
The more lyrical material
that emerges should be
brought out to balance
the opening theme and
rhythmic figures from the
first section. A
development of the
material from the opening
follows, driving to a
brief pause. This pause
feels like it will lead
to a contrasting lyrical
theme, but the energy is
just suspended for a
second before the piece
takes off again. The work
finishes with a
repeated-note transition
back to variations on the
opening material and a
propulsive rush to the
end.I enjoyed writing
this piece and hope your
students will enjoy
playing these contrasting
styles and that you will

only through a spurious
edition in G Major, the
authentic Concertino in F
was recently discovered
in Italy by Pedro Diaz,
English Hornist of the
Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra. Diaz prepared
this ground-breaking
authentic edition through
comparison of the
multiple historical
sources and an intimate
knowledge of Donizetti's
works. The new edition in
F Major is embellished
with footnotes regarding
sources and
ornamentation. The piano
reduction and orchestral
score and parts
(available on rental)
were prepared by
composer/oboist Mark
Biggam in tandem with
Diaz's work, and the
publication includes
extensive historical
notes by scholar Michael
Finkelman. PEDRO DIAZ
joined The Metropolitan
Opera Orchestra in 2005
and has performed as solo
English Hornist in
hundreds of productions.
As a sought after
teacher, Mr. DÃaz has
lectured extensively at
top music conservatories
including The Juilliard
School, The Manhattan
School of Music, The
Eastman School of
Music,The Hartt Music
School, and Duquesne
University. His
international appearances
include masterclasses in
Panama, Italy, Mexico,

The pieces
contained in Arensky's
Three Quartets, Opus 57
are quaint and
accessible. These
editions contain
transliterations of the
Russian (along with
pronunciation guide), and
an English translation
which intentionally is
more to the essence of
the original poetry and a
truer translation, rather
than forcing a rhyme
scheme at the expense of
the integrity of the
original text. The
expressive imagery, with
colorful depictions of
nature and the stars, is
heightened by the lyric
solo cello. From soaring
lines reflecting the
mountains in
“Serenada,” to the
use of the cello's upper
register in “To the
Extinguished Stars,” to
the running sixteenth
notes mimicking “The
Boiling Hot Spring,”
the does not play a mere
accompaniment role. The
pieces can be performed
together or individually,
a cappella in the absence
of a cellist. However,
employing the solo cello
gives the performer and
listener the full visual
and aural range of the
expressive quality of
these choral gems.
