The
Hochzeitskantate (Wedding
Cantata) BWV 195 was
performed by Bach from
around 1730 at various
wedding celebrations in
different forms, and was
evidently also lent out
for performances further
afield. The only
surviving version of the
work dates from the last
years of Bach's life. The
opulently-scored first
part begins and ends with
grand choral movements,
and Bach scored both
parts for soloists and
for chorus. At the centre
of the cantata is an
exceptionally sensitive
bass aria, probably one
of Bach's most modern
vocal compositions of
all. A chorale movement
(Nun danket all and
bringet Ehr/ Now thank we
all and offer praise)
with obbligato horns
concludes the cantata as
the second part after the
consummation. Score and

The title
depicts the uplifting
nature of the piece that
inspires young players to
have confidence and
respect while living with
character and integrity.
The music is
characterized by strong
melodic intervals of
fourths and fifths and
dynamic contrasts, a
Larry Clark signature
that has made his music
so popular. In addition,
every player is an
important part of the
music. This is a perfect
showpiece for developing
groups for concerts or
festivals. As a former
teacher I always tried to
use the experience of
playing in an ensemble to
teach students about
being good people first b
having confidence, being
respectful, living with
character and integrity.
I choose to write music
with titles that will
stimulate students to
strive for this high
standard and I have tried
to write pieces that will
somehow musically depict
these values.
Integrity is one
such piece. I hope you
will find the main theme
to be uplifting and with
musical integrity, but
within the reach of
developing students. My
themes usually are
characterized by strong
melodic intervals of
fourths and fifths and
this piece is no
exception. It is also my
goal when writing music
for younger students to
provide every section in
the ensemble a chance to
play important melodic
material at some point in
the piece. In my humble
opinion, if students are
given music they like to
play they will want to
practice it over and over
again. The tempo markings
and bowings indicated are
only there as a guide and
should be adjusted to the
needs of your students.
It has been my pleasure
to have the opportunity
to write this piece. I
hope that you and your
students find it useful
for your program. LARRY

Matt
hew Whittall's preface to
Bright Ferment (2019): I
have a complicated
history with the string
quartet. Actually, it's
not that complicated. I
spent months writing a
huge one in my early
twenties and hastily
withdrew it after a long
delayed premiere, vowing
never to write another.
In a typical case of
karmic retribution, my
fear of the form would
eventually be overcome by
the unrefusable offer to
write the compulsory
piece for the Banff
International String
Quartet Competition in my
native Canada. The short
duration requested, about
nine minutes, also felt
like a good way to wade
gingerly back into the
medium. The title was
originally just a
nice-sounding pair of
words that surfaced in a
brainstorming session
with fellow composer Alex
Freeman over an
injudicious amount of
fermented barley. When I
looked it up later, I
found that it was a
phrase of older coinage,
seemingly used more for
poetic resonance than any
fixed meaning. Ferment by
itself denotes a state of
confusion, change or lack
of order. With bright, it
takes on a more positive
connotation with regard
to society and
creativity: a wild
profusion of ideas barely
checked by reason. (It
may not actually mean
that, but it describes
this piece nicely, so
let's go with it.)
Fermentation in its
trendy culinary usage is
also hinted at via a
recurrent percolating
device of scattered
pizzicati. As one may
guess from the tone of
this introduction, there
is little attempt at
gravity in Bright
Ferment, the only means
by which I felt I could
sidestep the historical
and expressive weight of
the string quartet genre.
Styles, gestures and
moods are tossed around,
cross-cut and abandoned
in
stream-of-consciousness
fashion, connected by
little except an
intuitive sense of
rightness in their
juxtaposition. If the
piece acquires depth in
spite of me, it will only
be because its disparate
parts amplify and
strengthen each other
simply by being together
- much like the ensemble
itself. Bright Ferment
was commissioned by the
Banff Centre for the Arts
and Creativity and the
Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation, with
additional funding from
the Americas Society (New
York), for the 2019 Banff
International String
Quartet Competition.

THE
DREAMERS for horn, violin
and piano is the sixth of
a series of seven
compositions named after
Karen Blixen's collection
of short stories Seven
Gothic Tales. My musical
gothic tales are written
for very different
ensembles - THE SUPPER AT
ELSINORE is a saxophone
quartet, THE OLD
CHEVALIER is for bass
trombone and piano, THE
MONKEY is a chamber
orchestra work - but they
all share musical
material in a criss-cross
of contextual references
reminiscent of Blixen's
narrative complexity:
Themes and motivs from
one piece appear in
others in new and
surprising shapes and
combinations. Karen
Blixen's THE DREAMERS has
the most complex
narrative structure of
all her seven gothic
tales.The story is made
up of three tales with
different narrators, but
with the same principal
caracter in various
disguises, all three
imbedded within a fourth
tale that serves as a
framework for the entire
short story. The main
story line unravels the
life of a famous opera
diva who looses her voice
during a terrible fire.
Before this her life was
perpetual bliss, and the
tragedy drives her into
assuming different
personality guises in
order to escape reality.
Toward the end she is
confronted with her true
identity, and dies. THE
DREAMERS isn't 'about'
anything. The music is
inspired by the artistic
content of Blixen's short
story - it's
emotionalism, dramatic
construction, atmosphere,
period and settings - but
unfolds in time and
musical space in ways
that are completely
independent of the
story's narrative
progression... except one
might say that the three
players try their best to
either catch or escape
each other, and that when
they finally meet, it
happens abruptly, even
tragically - and only
barely provides a little
consolation. Duration:
approximately 15
minutes.

Got
t ist unsre Zuversicht
BWV 197 was probably
written in the second
half of the 1730s for a
wedding, no further
details of which are
known. In the opening
chorus in particular, it
features quite a sizeable
orchestra. The text of
the cantata has one major
theme - trust in God! In
a magnificent lullaby
(movement 3) all cares
are sung to sleep. The
other arias, with their
exceptionally exquisite
combinations of scorings,
make the cantata into a
quite special work,
albeit one which is
associated with a
particular occasion. The
wedding cantata BWV 197
draws on older material
for some of its
movements. Two movements
are parodies on arias
from the incomplete
surviving Christmas
cantata Ehre sei Gott in
der Hohe, BWV 197a,
including the lullaby O
du angenehmes Paar, of
which only the last
quarter survives from the
Christmas cantata - it is
O du angenehmer Schatz
there. By using the later
version, Diethard
Hellmann has been able to
reconstruct the original
version of this dreamlike
beautiful movement;
however, the complete
Christmas cantata cannot
be reconstructed from the
sources. Score available

Got
t ist unsre Zuversicht
BWV 197 was probably
written in the second
half of the 1730s for a
wedding, no further
details of which are
known. In the opening
chorus in particular, it
features quite a sizeable
orchestra. The text of
the cantata has one major
theme - trust in God! In
a magnificent lullaby
(movement 3) all cares
are sung to sleep. The
other arias, with their
exceptionally exquisite
combinations of scorings,
make the cantata into a
quite special work,
albeit one which is
associated with a
particular occasion. The
wedding cantata BWV 197
draws on older material
for some of its
movements. Two movements
are parodies on arias
from the incomplete
surviving Christmas
cantata Ehre sei Gott in
der Hohe, BWV 197a,
including the lullaby O
du angenehmes Paar, of
which only the last
quarter survives from the
Christmas cantata - it is
O du angenehmer Schatz
there. By using the later
version, Diethard
Hellmann has been able to
reconstruct the original
version of this dreamlike
beautiful movement;
however, the complete
Christmas cantata cannot
be reconstructed from the
sources. Score and parts
available separately -
see item CA.3119700.
