String
Quartet No.3 was written
for, and first performed
by the Balanescu Quartet,
February 1990 at the
Queen Elizabeth Hall,
London. Duration 16
minutes. Instrumental
parts are available on
sale. Quoting composer:
In the summer of 1989 I
composed a choral work,
Out of the Ruins, for
Agnieszka Piotrowska's
BBC2 documentary which
dealt with the physical
and emotional responses
of some inhabitants of
Leninakhan to the
earthquake which
devastated Armenia the
previous December. When
he heard the recording of
the work that I made with
the Holy Echmiadzin
Chorus under the fervent
conducting of Khoren
Meykhanejian, Alex
Balanescu suggested
turning Out of the Ruins
into a string quartet.
There seemed no reason or
opportunity to do this
until I felt the need to
add to the intensity of
my experiences in Armenia
the no less profound
experience of witnessing
the images of the
Romanian revolution on
television during the
later part of December
1989. The compositional
procedure was as follows:
to take Out of the Ruins
as a template on which
the Romanian vocal or
instrumental music would
be superimposed, quite
often stretched into new
intervallic shapes though
the demands of the
completely performed
harmonic structure.

Johannes
Brahms wrote the Academic
Festival Overture op. 80
in Bad Ischl in the
summer of 1880 as a token
of thanks for the
honorary doctorate that
had been bestowed upon
him the previous year by
the University of
Breslau. In keeping with
the event, the work
contains various
folkloric and student
songs which Brahms
borrowed from the
well-known Commers-Buch
fur den deutschen
Studenten, a book
containing material for
the annual students'
social gatherings. The
overture's first
performance was held in
Breslau on 4 January 1881
under the direction of
the composer. The present
arrangement for string
quartet by Christian
Beyer compliments the
already available
overtures by Mozart,
which Beyer also arranged
for this
instrumentation.

In the summer of 1893
Antonin Dvorak sat down
and composed String
Quartet In F, Op.96.
This beloved quartet was
written whilst Dvorak was
on vacation in rural
Iowa. It is a slow
movement for quartet and
the finale sweeps along
on a energetic,
syncopated rhythm in the
second violin and viola
that shortly transforms
itself into a wonderful
patchwork of shifting
accents. The first violin
sings, first randomly and
then voluptuously, atop
this motoric
accompaniment. The
quartet is written for 2
violins, viola and cello
