Messa d'morti. Par DURANTE FRANCESCO. The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as achurch composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century [Graun's 'Tod Jesu']. The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal pointof view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. The six collections of 'Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien' published by Johann Adam Hiller offer a selection of motets, mostly from the second half of the 18th century. They show us the products of a new age of achievement in which the motet was again able to flourish after this genre had led only a shadowlike existence for more than a century. The editor of those collections, Johann Adam Hiller, was active as a composer of Singspie, editor of various musical periodicals, leader of the Gewandhaus concerts, University Director of Music, musical director of the Neukirche, and finally, from 1789, Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Upon Hiller's assumption of the office of Thomaskantor theolder motets were replaced in Leipzig church services by contemporary compositions. Printed texts which have been preserved show that Hiller's collections were used widely. A Critical Report from the editor, Uwe Wolf, with additional information concerning the motets and their composers, will be published to cover all the collections. / Mottet / Répertoire / Choeur Mixte

Böhmische Hirtenmesse. Par RYBA JAN JAKUB. Freely rhymed Mass settings; available either in German or Czech. The Bohemian Christmas masses are a typical product from the end of the 18th century. Jan Jakub Ryba’s Pastoral Mass from 1796 is a prototype of this genre. It was set in Czechoslovakian and filled with a conscious simple, folk-like musicality, which every villager in Ryba’s time could understand. Correspondingly, Ryba’s work became so popular that in the course of time – according to Milan Kuna, the editor of the Mass – “it was felt to be a symbol of Czechoslovakian Christmas. ” In addition to the original text the music also includes a German singing text. / Messe / Répertoire / Solistes SATB, Choeur SATB, Flûte Traversière, 2 C

Par MASSENET JULES. Cendrillon (Cinderella), with a libretto by Henri Cain based on Perrault's fairytale, premiered in 1899 in Paris. Best known for composing over thirty operas, the composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) purposely did not attend the premiere, but received a telegram the following day from baritone Fugère recording its triumph. Incorporating the composer's sense of humour and wit, the use of recurrent motifs is subtle and often thought to be inspired by Richard Wagner. Cendrillon contains musical echoes of the 18th century, incorporating gallant music, the use of the Lute and Viola D'Amore and a series of Balletentrees. The Opera is in four acts with 19 characters and a chorus. The role of Prince Charming is a breeches role whilst the melody lines of the Fairy Godmother are characterised by trills and arpeggios. Massenet 's Cendrillon remains popular to this day and was notably performed at the Royal Opera House in 2011. / Opéra-opérette / Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Among the vocal compositions incorrectly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, the cantata has a place of its own, because its tonal language approaches the unmistakable style of the Thomaskantor. This applies especially to its choral movements and recitatives. In the surviving sources, only one of which dates back to the 18th century, there are certain compositonal errors which cannot possibly be reconciled to Bach's mature style. Here, as also in his earlier 'Litte Credo Mass' KV 192, Mozart made use of a church music device which can be traced back in south-German and Austrian church music to the beginning of the 18th century: frequent repetition of the opening words of the 'Credo'. This presupposes that the setting of the words of the intonation 'Credo in unum Deum' as part of an ensemble composition, which for centuries had been intoned in plainsong by the priest, had become liturgically acceptable. Opera in three acts. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. ; Almira, Handel's first opera, was well received when premiered in 1705 at the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg. The director was Reinhard Keiser, who, remarkably, had himself already set Friedrich Christian Feustking's text to music. The role of Fernando was sung by Johann Mattheson. The translation used by Handel leaves several Italian arias in their original language, resulting in a delightful mixture of German and Italian. The opera which, after sundry entangled romances, ends in the wedding of three couples, is characterised by exuberant scenes: the procession at Almira's crowning ceremony, a duel, a prison scene and a masked-ball involving the three continents Europe, Africa and Asia. The vocal score to ; Almira by George Frideric Handel brings about a small sensation: Whilst conducting a reenactment of this work in 1732, Georg Philipp Telemann removed the Aria no. 28 ; Ingrato, spietato from his conducting score. Since then this aria has been deemed lost. Due to necessity only the edited vocal text devoid of any music was presented in the 1994 volume of the ; Halle Handel Edition. Thanks to a recently discovered contemporary manuscript copy from the beginning of the 18th century which was found in the music library of the Mariengymnasium in Jever, this aria has now been made available to performers for the first time in this new vocal score edition. Previous to this the corresponding pages could only be seen as a facsimile in an article of the ; Göttinger Händel -Beiträge. Now the aria can be performed again. Furthermore, with the help of this new source, missing measures in the basso continuo which had initially been completed by the editor of the ; Halle Handel Edition volume, could be reconstructed from the basso continuo part of the Bellante aria ; Ich brenne zwar (no. 71). - Urtext edition based on the ; Halle Handel Edition - Original German and Italian text with a German translation of the Italian arias/ Répertoire / Solistes, SATB et Orchestre

Kirchenkantate, Bwv 192, 1730Ca. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The cantata 'Nun danket alle Gott” (Now thank we all our God) BWV 192 is based on the text of the well-known hymn. It is therefore one of a small number of chorale cantatas which contain no free poetic texts. Correspondingly, there are no recitatives either. It has only recently been assumed that this three-movement work was not intended for Leipzig, but was actually written in 1730 for Bach's prestigious position as Kapellmeister of Saxe-Weissenfels. The court of Duke Christian enjoyed the its sojourn in the newly-renovated castle of its secondary residence in Sangerhausen and, at Trinity, in the court church, celebrated the anniversary of its consecration with festive music. Bach evidently occasionally contributed to this. The work does not survive complete. Even in the 18th century a full score evidently no longer existed, just a set of parts, the tenor part of which is entirely missing. For the new edition the missing part has been reconstructed by Detlev Schulten (Leipzig)./ Répertoire / Chœur Mixte et Piano
