Italian -
German.
Puccini had
hardly finished his work
on 'Tosca' in 1900 and
seen its first
performances when a new
potential opera subject
attracted his attention
during a theatre visit in
London: the play staged
was 'Madame Butterfly.
Tragedy of a Japanese
Woman'. At the beginning
of 1904, the musical
setting of this subject
matter was completed -
the work was a failure at
the world premiere.
Thereupon, Puccini
revised it into a
three-act version, and it
was in this form that the
opera about the unhappy
Japanese woman began its
triumphant progress.Apart
from the Italian libretto
and the common German
translation, this edition
contains introductory
commentaries of Kurt
Pahlen who also adds
information on the
compositional structure
and context to the
musical as well as
external and internal
dramatic action of the
opera. A short synopsis
and a brief outline of
the genesis bring the
work into relation with
the composer's entire
oeuvre and life, thus
offering a comprehensive,
richly illustrated
introduction.

The
Butterfly that
Stamped is a story
from the anthology
Just So Stories,
written by Rudyard
Kipling for his daughter
who suffered constant bad
health. The book inspired
composer Maxim Aulio to
compose this work which
is in a French
impressionistic style.
The piece opens with a
beautiful palace
surrounded by the
impressive gardens of
King Solomon. It is in
these gardens that the
baritone saxophone makes
its appearance
representing King Solomon
himself, the flute
representing the
butterfly couple, the
clarinet representing
Queen Balkis and the
trumpet the
djin.

iscrive nella tradizione

e incantano per la loro
poesia.

Known for
her Operas and Vocal
works, contemporary
composer, Isabelle
Aboulker has won numerous
prizes for her
compositions. The Cat,
The Butterfly, The Leaf
and The Others appeals to
all as it is sublimely
composed for a
children''s choir.
Aboulker has done a
significant amount of
work with children and as
a result, she has
specially composed pieces
to which they can relate.
This is true of The Cat,
The Butterfly, The Leaf
and The Others which
comprises six movements;
1) The Cat, 2) The Glow
Worm, 3) The Butterfly,
4) The Ants, 5) The Leaf,
and 6) The Raven. As an
exciting alternative
collection in the Vocal
repertoire, Aboulker''s
The Cat, The Butterfly,
The Leaf and The Others
is an exquisite addition
to the children''s choir
repertoire..

In a world
of invisible waves: a
butterfly is a response
to the idea of the
butterfly effect: that a
small cause can have a
disproportionately large
effect. Before composing
the music I wrote this
short poem in order to
focus my imagination and
help with shaping the
most appropriate sonic
gestures:In a world of
invisible waves: a
butterfly Flies into a
storm Which it
unknowingly created When
it took its first
flight.This narrative is
not literally translated,
but maybe you can hear
the resonances of
delicate flapping and
mercurial weather
somewhere amid the
rippling waves of the
music? It is warmly
dedicated to Catherine Le
Bris. (Christian Mason,
2016) Bibliography:
