fragment from Das Urteil (The Judgement) by Franz Kafka. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. Kafka's œuvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him – I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear – could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. Composer and choir master Clytus Gottwald comments on his transcription of Anton Webern’s Im Sommerwind (1904) as follows: “First of all I had to eliminate all those parts of the source material that had strictly instrumental designs, reducing the work – to quote Wolfgang Rihm – to its singable remnant. What was so surprising, however, was that such a reduction did not lead to a meaningless sequence of fragments, but that the fragments turned out to be – with regard to harmony and motifs – so closely related to each other that the result proved an impressive ‘work within a work’. The reduction uncovered something that could be called the ‘essence’ of the work. In order to make the singable remnant singable, I used fragments from Bruno Wille’s poem Im Sommerwind, which Webern had used as a basis for his composition.”/ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte SATB

In the bleak midwinter is a setting for four-part choir of the famous poem by Christina Rossetti. This poem came to mind when I was walking down a Cornish lane on a cold, bleak November day, and I began to put the words to music as I walked. I was a little hesitant to write a setting of this text in the light of other much loved versions, but I felt inspired so decided to go for it! An atmosphere of cold, winter stillness is conveyed in this piece with its gentle dissonances and slow, homophonic movement, and the music follows the natural rhythm of the words, resulting in frequent changes of bar-length. Each verse is set to the same music, but in the final verse the music responds to the climax of the poem, with the words 'give my heart' repeated three times, rising in intensity but then falling away again to finish as the piece began, in quiet stillness. A natural shape and line to each phrase should be led by the text, with subtle shading off and no hurrying at the end of lines. Likewise, the poem's punctuation should guide breathing. Overall, a sense of space should prevail but without the tempo dragging. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) A Cappella
