On the occasion of the marriage of her son Archduke Ferdinand of Austria to the Princess Maria Ricciarda Beatrice of Modena , the Empress Maria Theresia commissioned the young Mozart to compose the work, Serenata Teatrale ' Ascanio in Alba”. The librettist the Viennese Abate Guiseppe Parini , one of the most outstanding poets of the 18th century, wrote a baroque-designed libretto, which paid homage to and congratulated the royal couple. Mozart wrote the music in only a few weeks, from the end of August until 23 September 1771. The first performance took place on 17 October 1771 in Milan to rousing success. Shortly thereafter, Leopold Mozart wrote that his son's composition had so overpowered the main performance of Hasses opera, 'Il Ruggierio ” from the previous day, that he could hardly describe it. ' Ave verum was commissioned early in 2011 by Edward Rowntree for the birthday of his father, John Rowntree, director of music at Douai Abbey in the UK. My aim was to write a piece both short and simple, suitable for regular liturgical use. There are, of course, many wonderful settings of this text already, not least those by William Byrd and Edward Elgar, both of which I sang as a boy. In this instance I felt their presence as a fellowship and, having their music in my head while writing, I was encouraged rather than daunted. In fact, if you listen with this in mind, you may hear a phrase or two in homage to the great masters.' - John Duggan An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Born in 1963, John Duggan was a chorister at Westminster Cathedral and studied music at Oxford. While still a boy, he dreamed of writing in the great European choral tradition of Victoria, Tallis and Palestrina. His vocal music has delighted both singers and audiences across Europe and the United States, and he composes regularly for film and dance. He has composed for a number of choirs including Commotio, Westminster Cathedral Choir, the Hildegard Choir and Sospiri, and has written commissions for the Edington Music Festival, Crossover Intergenerational Dance Group, Oxford Youth Dance and The Oxford-Grenoble Association. John regularly performs as a singer and choral director and works as a recording engineer and producer. Vol. III of this four-volume critical edition includes fourteen 6-, 7- and 8-part madrigals. Undoubtedly, these materials were largely conceived for use on special occasions – though, to date, it has been possible to identify nothing but an invitation to a banquet, a composition in praise of an unspecified «Sienese gentlewoman», and a homage to Henry of Valois who, in 1574, passed through Venice en route from Poland to his coronation at Reims as king of France. ThePreface, in English and Italian, historically contextualizes the repertoire, briefly describes the poetic texts (discussed in greater detail in vol. III of the Historical and Critical Introduction to the Complete Works), and provides a panorama of the compositional techniques applied by Gabrieli to this variegated sequence of madrigals, which include several «dialoghi» and other double-choir compositions. / Classique / Date parution : 1905-07-09/ Répertoire / Choeur

Par SPEARS GREGORY. The Tower and the Garden is a setting of three poems for choir and string quartet. The texts juxtapose the dangers of technological hubris (the tower) and the need for a place of refuge (the garden) in a world threatened by war and ecological disaster. Each text suggest ways in which Catholic thought and imagery might challenge the status quo. The first text, poem 80 from the collection “Cables to the Ace,” was written by Trappist monk and social activist Thomas Merton. It is an eschatological meditation on the garden of Gethsemane, where Christ’s disciples slept on the eve of his crucifixion. Merton compares their slumber to society’s indifference to the destruction of our natural world by potentially dangerous new technologies and war. The second text was written by poet and Catholic activist Denise Levertov. It is a meditation on the Tower of Babel and the tendency for technology in the information and nuclear age to serve only its own growth and to potentially destroy our lives in the bargain. The third poem, written by Keith Garebian, is an homage to queer filmmaker Derek Jarman and his cottage garden at Dungeness on the English coast. Situated precariously between a towering nuclear power plant and the sea, the garden was Jarman’s austere refuge during the final months of his struggle with AIDS. While an atheist and highly critical of the church, Derek Jarman was intrigued by the role religious and hagiographic narratives could play in his filmic indictments of Thatcher-era Britain. Par GOODALL HOWARD. Never To Forget is a powerfully emotive choral work written in honour of the NHS health and care workers in the UK who died caring for others during the COVID-19 pandemic. The text comprises their names, each sung separately in turn, in a poignant and moving homage. The piece is designed as a living tribute, to memorialise their dedication and sacrifice through each performance. This is a work of remembrance, respect and gratitude for these courageous workers, never to be forgotten. The work is scored for SATB choir and chamber ensemble, with this vocal score including a piano reduction. Par BEATLES THE. Strawberry Fields Forever was John Lennon's homage to the garden of a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool. It gave The Beatles a psychedelic hit in 1967. The name was eventually adopted for a small memorial garden on the West Side of New York's Central Park opposite Lennon's final address, The Dakota apartment building.
