for Mezzo Soprano and Piano. Par SOREY TYSHAWN. Death by Tyshawn Sorey was commissioned by the L. A. Opera for a streaming premiere by mezzo-soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms in February 2021, with pianist Howard Watkins. Its text, by the great Black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, imagines just a glimmer of light dawning over a bleak, nightmarish landscape, haunted by death, which the composer explicitly connects to \'the current conditions and precarity of Black life in America in the 20th and 21st centuries\'. (Dunbar himself died in 1906 at the age of 33). This slow and melancholy setting expands the poem into a five-minute lament. This piano/vocal score includes the full text of the poem as well as a brief program note from the composer. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. L'enterrement de Mozart, un jeu ! Telle est la mésaventure d'un homme qui, passant rue de Lille à Paris, aperçoit dans une vitrine la gravure de ses rêves, L'enterrement de Mozart : après être entré dans la boutique, il est contraint d'entendre divaguer le vieillard qui possède l'image et l'exhibe pour attirer dans son antre des inconnus auxquels il raconte la disparition d'Aristide, un chien philosophe qui lui tint longtemps compagnie. Dans cette mésaventure vécue, j'aimais les artifices du faux se mêlant au vraisemblable. Mozart n'eut pas d'enterrement, il fut jeté à la fosse commune, la gravure est connue sous le titre Le convoi du pauvre, et c'est Beethoven qui l'aurait baptisée L'enterrement de Mozart. Quant à Aristide, le cabot philosophe, il est manifestement inspiré par le souvenir de Medji, le chien de Sophie, dans Le journal d'un fou de Gogol que j'ai porté jadis à la scène. J'ai donc vu là une métaphore de notre époque où, par images et clameurs, de multiples impostures et injonctions envahissent notre imaginaire. Et je songeais à en faire une dramatique pour la radio quand une revue me demanda une nouvelle pour un recueil collectif. De L'enterrement de Mozart je fis un conte baroque. Et c'est à ce conte que je revins quand Bruno Mantovani et Roland Hayrabedian pour Musicatreize me demandèrent si j'avais un sujet à leur proposer. J'ai longuement écouté la musique de Bruno où la voix humaine se mêle malicieusement à celles des instruments, et j'avais l'impression de palper les étoffes qui habilleraient les mots que je disposerais dans un nouveau texte. J'ai donc récrit le conte baroque en le métamorphosant par un dialogue multiple, syncopé, parfois même bouffon, dont Bruno Mantovani pourrait se servir comme de séquences ou syntagmes sonores dans le jeu acrobatique des voix et des instruments. Hubert Nyssen Très peu de temps après avoir fini mon opéra L'autre côté, créé en septembre 2006 à Strasbourg, j'ai ressenti le besoin de retourner à un travail pour la scène dans une dimension plus intimiste que pour ce premier projet dramatique, et surtout dans un registre plus léger. La proposition de Roland Hayrabedian de participer au cycle des 'sept contes' est tombée à point nommé. Avec un effectif vocal restreint (5 voix, dont 2 assignées à des personnages mis en scène et 3 à un 'choeur antique' commentant l'action) et une instrumentation faisant la part belle aux cordes (pincées, frappées, frottées), j'ai tenté de jouer sur une perpétuelle animation inspirée par le compositeur italien Domenico Cimarosa. Le 'conte baroque' écrit par Hubert Nyssen utilise la parodie, la référence, ce que j'ai souligné dans cette partition de 40 minutes aux tempi frénétiques, en fondant une partie du discours sur des 'basses d'Alberti' contrariées. Car le personnage principal de ce conte, absent de la scène, est Mozart, dont on évoque le cortège funéraire à partir d'une gravure qui sera le déclencheur d'une scène où l'absurde et le quiproquo sont permanents. Tragédie-opéra Drame héroïque en trois actes. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most popular opera “Orphée et Euridice” was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck’s reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plotsurrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. Kantate Zum Epiphaniasfest. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. This six-movement cantata uses the hymn of the same name by Ahasverus Fritsch, first recorded in 1698 in the Darmstädter Liederbuch. This places it amongst those chorale cantatas which use a hymn from the repertoire associated with Pietism. As was customary, the hymn text is retained in the outer movements, whereas the text for the inner movements - two secco recitatives and a tenor and a bass aria - are concerned with the contrast between the hostile world and the certainty of Jesus- the links between the cantata text and the Feast of the Epiphany are correspondingly tenuous. In the first movement the soprano sings the hymn melody complete, accompanied by mainly homophonic vocal parts, whilst the instrumental writing is largely influenced by the melody of the first line of the hymn. Remarkable is the tenor aria, with its contrasting central section and its chromatic twists and turns, in which Bach once again proves himself to be a master of harmony.
