Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum. Janacek's intimate chamber-music drama about the passionate love of a simple farm boy for a beautiful gypsy girl is one of his great vocal masterpieces. This cycle of 22 songs for tenor (an alto and three female voices/female choir SSA are added in three numbers) was composed on a setting of poems that were published anonymously. It was not until 80 years later that their author was identified as the regional poet and writer Ozef Kalda. The cycle also contains theatrical elements, such as the alto entrance and exit cues and lighting effects. Composed in 1917-19, the Diary was premiered in Brno in 1921 from a manuscript prepared by Gustav Homola. The same manuscript served as abasis for the first edition which was issued by the Brno publisher Oldrich Pazdirek in 1921 as well as for this current first Urtext edition. He spends seven years in the fairy’s palace, and during this time becomes a marvellous cook. The years go by as in a dream, and he does not imagine that he is in truth in the body of a loathsome dwarf. When he sees his parents again, they do not recognize him. He is mocked and rejected by everyone. But Jakob is not disheartened! He has to protect himself and survive setbacks and tests until at the end of the story he regains his true form.Zwerg Nase, based on the fairy tale of the same name by Wilhelm Hauff, is a story which gives courage and hope. It is a story which tells of self-confidence and friendship. There are the animals in the fairy’s palace, who stand alongside Zwerg Nase, and above all his girlfriend the goose Mimi who is herself an enchanted maiden and is saved from the oven by Zwerg Nase. Mimi knows which magic herb can give him back his true form. And everything turns out well in the end.The text and music convey the magical content of the fairy tale in a playful, yet convincing way. Composed in 1818 on commission from an unknown individual in Lisbon, Adina was left to languish some years until its premiere in 1826, with a single performance in that city remaining virtually the only one on record until the opera's revival in 1963. The present vocal score is based on the critical edition of the orchestral full score prepared by Fabrizio Della Seta and published by the Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro in collaboration with Casa Ricordi. This Edition reconstructs for the first time the structure of the autograph score, which reflects the collective contributions of at least five different hands: having composed only four entirely new numbers and repurposed another three from Sigismondo, Rossini relied upon collaborators and copyists for the remainder of the music. Della Seta's detailed examination of this fundamental document (housed at the Fondazione Rossini) together with an informed assessment of the secondary sources, including a complete manuscript copy (housed at the British Library in London), various manuscript vocal parts with Rossini's autograph interventions (housed in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels), and the first edition of the vocal score published by Ricordi between 1855 and 1859, additionally reveals how the libretto printed in Lisbon for that single historic performance in 1826 differed substantially from the narrative disposition of the autograph score, with ample cuts and modifications (among those the suppression of the Aria Alì and the addition of a Coro). The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Egle was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. This edition is based on Rameaus autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version - which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas - but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised. / Chant Et Piano

Missa Sancti Martini. Par MISKINIS VYTAUTAS. The Latvian composer Vytautas Miškinis (*1954) has become one of the internationally most prominent composers of the middle generation from the Baltic States.
Initially, 'Missa brevis', which is subtitled 'Missa Sancti Martini' in honour of the patron saint of the Mainz Cathedral, was originally commissioned by the girls' choir of the Cathedral and of St. Quintin's Church in Mainz. The world premiere, however, did not take place until this year as part of the international choral festival 'Europa Cantat' in Mainz.

Par CANAT DE CHIZY EDITH. Cette pièce est une commande des choeurs de l'Orchestre de Paris pour leur 30e anniversaire, choeurs particulièrement nombreux (122 choristes). Face à la difficulté d'utiliser au mieux cette impressionnante masse sonore, j'ai pris le parti d'une écriture en double choeur traitée en répons, en surimpression, ou en alternance. Selon ma prédilection pour la langue anglaise, j'ai travaillé sur des textes du poète irlandais William Butler Yeats, deux poèmes correspondant aux deux parties de l'oeuvre: 'To a child dancing in the wind' et 'The dancing days are gone', suivis de cette fameuse épitaphe: 'Cast a cold eye on life, on death. Horseman, pass by !'. Ici le thème de la danse rejoint celui du mouvement, une de mes préoccupations constantes, ainsi que celui du chant: 'May sing, and sing until he drop.'

Par NAOUMOFF EMILE. These songs by Emile Naoumoff are squarely in the tradition of French lied composition such as by Gabriel Fauré. Here, Naoumoff chose texts by late 19th-century French lyricists: Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Emile Verhaeren, Charles Baudelaire and René-François Sully-Prudhomme.
In their elegance and suppleness, the four songs sound typically French. As they are all easy to sing and have not been composed 'against' the voice, they are perfectly suited for both music lessons and concert programmes.
Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of eight, he began his career as a pianist and composer; he was a student of Nadia Boulanger for ten years until her death. At the age of ten, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. He then received numerous awards and prizes and gave performances as highly acclaimed pianist. Today, Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University at Bloomington. Joe Public and his friends are tired of waiting for the zoo to open, so they stage a protest. Zack decides to let the 'Publics' in to prove the animals aren't ready to be seen. Most of the animals fail their 'SATs' but Joe and his friends love their quirkiness and think this is the best zoo ever! Joe suggests renaming it 'The Zany Zoo' so that people will know what to expect.
Once Zack sees his creatures in a new light, he stops trying to standardise them. He even apologises for not appreciating their individuality, and declares: 'The Zany Zoo is opening right now!'

Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The Song of the Earth , composed in the summer of 1908, is Mahler’s best-known and most personal work. Reflecting drastic changes in his life, its immense emotional density is very moving. Until the very end, Mahler continued to refine the extremely differentiated instrumentation, as is evident in numerous retouchings in the autograph score and engraver’s model. It is therefore all the more regrettable that he was neither able to perform his “Symphony in Songs” himself nor that he was involved in its printing. Unfortunately, in the posthumously published first edition of 1912 and the subsequent editions edited by Erwin Ratz and Karl Heinz Füssl, many questions remained unanswered, while other were answered in a dubious way. The edition is the first text-critical one of the work on a scientifically sound basis. It offers not only a more reliable musical text, but also systematically and lucidly prepared information on the sources, their transmission and evaluation. All editorial decisions have been documented in a transparently comprehensible manner – in particular those leading to new audible results. Work-related notes on performance practice, which for the first time include Mahler’s conducting indications, offer valuable, indispensable interpretive aids. In addition to the regular five clarinet parts, the set of parts includes two additional parts (3rd clarinet/E b clarinet, bass clarinet/3rd clarinet in places where the latter plays E b clarinet) to allow performances with only four clarinets. The completely revised piano reduction reproduces the orchestral texture true to the score without losing sight of playability. Par BUXTEHUDE DIETRICH. Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was organist of the St Marien church in Lübeck from 1668 until his death. He wrote many works for specific secular occasions, feasts and celebrations etc. and although his positon did not require him to compose vocal music he left over 120 vocal works in a wide range of scorings, style and length. Almost all texts are sacred and scorings vary from a single voice with instrument to nine voices with several instruments and continuo. This cantata uses the text of Psalm 118: 6-7 and is scored for mixed chorus (SATB), strings and continuo. Pastorale Héroïque In One Act. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Eglé was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. This edition is based on Rameau's autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version—which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas—but also reconstructs theoriginal state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised. For Children's Choir and Piano . Par PART ARVO. ‘I went to nursery school every day until the end of secondary school!’ Arvo Pärt says and pauses, staring slyly at his listener. ‘My mother worked at a nursery school in Rakvere, and I always went to visit her after my lessons.’ There, the future composer often sat at the piano and played or improvised for his little friends. Arvo Pärt is a composer best known for his 'tintinnabuli' compositions. It is a lesser-known fact that in his earlier years as a composer, he also wrote children's songs and piano pieces along with music for plays and animated films.
This volume, 'Songs from Childhood', contains a selection of Arvo Pärt's music for children from the period 1956-1970. In those years he was involved with several children's studios and theatres as the piano accompanist and composer. Most of his music for children came about by way of improvisation in rehearsals and was only later completed and put on paper. These pieces therefore retain all the spontaneity and playful spirit in which they were created.
'Songs from Childhood' includes a CD of the same name, providing recordings of the songs with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments in the roiginal Estonian language for your enjoyment. These new accompaniments, which are also included as backing tracks on the CD, were arranged by the composer Tauno Aints in collaboration with Arvo Pärt.
The sheet music of these arrangements is available on hire. The piano version doubles as a piano reduction.

Following the cantata 'Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. Herbert Howell's Requiem written for unaccompanied SATB chorus and soli. Although written in 1936, Requiem was not released for performance until 1980, held back by Howells following the death of his son in 1935. It is a harmonious and deeply Romantic composition, but restrained and it is at these moments we realise how affected he was by his loss.
