Programme Note City Solstice celebrates the 800th anniversary of the construction of variousbridges on the site of the current London Bridge. The difficulty of erecting sturdy constructions on this bend in the Thames where the currents are particularly strong has led to a rich seam of stories aboutthe bridges passed on through history myth and folklore. What are thought to be the original words of 'London Bridge is falling down' carry much of the references to materials used in building the original bridges- wood and stone gravel and stone and then later iron and steel. The lines my fair lady dance over my lady lea (or lee ) and with a gay lady are thought to refer to Matilda of Scotland (c.1080- 1118) consort of Henry I and who was responsible for building the series of bridges that carried the London toColchester road across the River Lea.King (Saint) Olaf II of Norway figures prominently in the destruction of the bridge after its occupation by the Danes around 1013. Coming to the assistance of Aethelred Olaf isthought to have pulled the bridge down into the Thames along with its occupying Danes rather than fight on the bridge itself. The mood is of quiet ecstasy in praise of the Holy Motherof God whose womb He made a throne and whose belly He made more spacious than the Heavens.Ideally the music is performed in a large acoustic hall so that the echoes can be heard to die away in the commas between thevarious sections. The sound should be warm rich and sonorous.

Arrangeur: Siegfried Petrenz. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. George Frideric Handel is considered England’s first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Messa d'morti. Par DURANTE FRANCESCO. The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as achurch composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. For this first publication, editor and leading British choral director Stephen Darlington has consulted many of the approximately 50 surviving sources of the work, presenting a critical edition which for the first time makes Durante’s Requiem available to a wider musical audience. - First publication - Urtext edition - Particularly suitable for smaller choirs and ensembles: soprano and alto solo, double choir (SSATB ATB) and strings (plus 2 horns in the Tuba mirum) - Full score and orchestral material also available (EP73044) The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. Observation: SATB: Score Chorale SATB Novello & Co Ltd.
Full Score- Tarik O'Regan's Mass Observation was commissioned for the University...(+)
Full Score- Tarik O'Regan's Mass Observation was commissioned for the University of Michigan Chamber Choir Jerry Blackstone conductor thanks to support from the William K. and Delores S. Brehm Choral Commissioning Fund and the Barbara Abramoff Levy Fund. Composer's note: Mass Observation is a meditation on the histories of our varied ambivalent relationships with surveillance in its myriad guises. The use of technologies that sate our desires to be watchedand heard (safety tracking empowerment and pride) has in some sense always been able to be weighed against our anxieties around invasions of privacy (physical and psychological harm hacking subjugation and embarrassment). The work takes its title from the British social research organisation Mass-Observation which aimed to record everyday life in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1937 Mass-Observation controversially paid investigators to anonymously record people's conversation and behaviour at work on the street and at various public occasions including public meetings sporting and religious events. Scored for chorus and percussion sextet Mass Observation ebbs and flows between various polarities (human voices and percussion instruments pitched and unpitched sounds clear and opaque tonalities) over the course of its thirteen movements. There is a ritualistic nature to the overall pacing of the work reminiscent of a liturgical mass setting. The two groups of musicians are rarely aligned: for much of the piece they watch and listen to one another in silence. Duration approximately: 40 Minutes

This piece will be particularly useful for school junior and community choirs and a tuneful introduction to singing simple contrapuntal lines. The second soprano part repeats the tune at bar 33 and should dominate here; the first sopranos and altos should support appropriately.
