Prayer is
one of the composer's
most original and
sophisticated works. The
typical African-American
church service seems to
be a source for this
piece with its interplay
of sections and colors,
yet the work in form and
rhythmic choices is
clearly 'classical' and
never breaks out into
easy imitations of, for
example, gospel music.The
work opens with the choir
singing the spiritual 'My
Lord, What a Mornin'' in
octaves, sung flat-out a
cappella, as might happen
in church. The
instrumental section
following this opening
feels very much like a
thoughtful response by
the congregation.
Instruments seem to
behave like individual
churchgoers, colorfully
dressed and answering
various episodes with
individual thoughts. As
for any fears that the
mighty organ might drown
out the proceedings,
Singleton puts that to
rest by employing it
almost like another choir
or section of the choir.
The trumpet soloist does
not blast us into heaven,
it tends to sing and, we
find out later, is
preparing us for the
spiritual 'Where Shall I
Be When the Firs' Trumpet
Soun'?' Even the tenor
soloist behaves much like
just another (but still
important) instrument.The
composer has chosen to
not only feature
spirituals, but also to
set a poetic text called
A Christian Prayer, whose
main message, almost like
some modern-day Kyrie,
calls out 'save us teach
us ' and extols the
importance of humility
and the defeat of
violence. Singleton has
always been a composer
who has simultaneously
answered the call to
carry out what he feels
is his duty to his fellow
humans while using the
finest of his art to do
so, and Prayer finds him
at the top of his game.-

Schoenfeld has described
his Three Intermezzi (for
Piano Solo) as one of a
very few works he has
written simply to please
himself. In his words,
'Here is music my hands
feel like touching with
sounds my ears enjoy
perceiving.' Its three
movements were written at
different times, but
coalesced into a single
work. The Three
Intermezzi explore an
interior world devoid of
anything ostentatious.
Schoenfeld's signature
counterpoint--echoing
both Bach and Brahms--is
evident throughout. The
music is intimate, serene
and contemplative. 'It's
the sort of music I
improvise at night with
the lights out and the
house empty,' he says.
The first Intermezzo
quotes a bit of a Bach
prelude, then develops it
in waves and spirals that
course up and down the
keyboard. The second
Intermezzo emerges from a
single repeated note into
an oscillating minor
third and finally into a
dark and soulful
Sicilienne. The third
Intermezzo, as long as
the other two combined,
explores the boundaries
where decidedly crafted
music and mediation
combine..

Munden is one of the most
creative German
church-musicians today.
From 1992 to 1999 he
worked as the cantor in
Minden, where he also
directed the music school
for choristers. From 1999
he has been the
Cathedral-Cantor at the
Braunschweig Cathedral
and the director of the
cathedral school for
choristers. He is the
initiator and artistic
director of a successful
school project throughout
Germany encouraging
youngsters to sing.

composition for two- to

dynamic nuances, changes
of time, chromaticism and
triplet figures as well
as harp-like arpeggios
which give the work a
mystical quality. Due to
its chord progressions
with great chromaticism,
the choral part of this
c. 4-minute work contains
some intonational
obstacles which are worth
negotiating while holding
out the prospect of a

Lar in
Roman mythology refers to
the so-called Lares, gods
of households, fields and
pathways, deified souls
of the deceased and
tutelary deities,
especially of the house
and its inhabitants. Lar
is also the fireplace in
a house - and thus a
place where you feel
protected. Lar II is part
of a cycle. Each piece
focusses on a kind of
movement or transition
between the interior (the
house) and the unknown
(the outside, the
adventure). Gilles
Deleuze speaks of
deterritorialization; it
is precisely this process
that is also used in
music as a metaphor. For
Deleuze, a melody can act
as a ritornello, for
example, representing the
house, the acquainted.
Lar II plays with
ritornellos which are
developed alternatingly -
like breathing- with
certain movements to the
outside and back again.
Musically, the instrument
organ opens/introduces as
a topos something within
a space and focusses on
the concept of space as
the central point of a
continuous musical

thousand words', so
perhaps that is enough
said about the philosophy
behind this instructional
endeavour. But even the

should say here that the
cartoons in this book are
the products of Clyde E.
