Based on the film by Ingmar Bergman, Sebastian Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata follows Charlotte Andergast, a celebrated concert pianist, as she visits the country home of her adult daughter, Eva. Charlotte has not seen Eva for seven years, during which time Eva and her husband Viktor have lost their three-year-old son Erik. Eva’s sister, Helena (Charlotte’s daughter), had been held in an institution but now (unbeknownst to Charlotte) lives with Eva and Viktor. Charlotte brings with her her need for adulation, imagining the chorus as an admiring concert audience applauding her every decision. When the family members converge under one roof after years of separation, they begin to delve into the past and old wounds?despite their good intentions?are reopened. Autumn Sonata was commissioned by the Finnish National Opera and premiered in Helsinki on 8 September 2017 with the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by John Storgårds. This charming opera satire belongs to the genre of ?metamelodrama? in which the opera itself becomes the subject of the action. The people who are part of an opera production, for example the writer, composer and prima donna, appear as characters on the stage and are presented in a humorous mirror image. In this ?theatre about theatre? Salieri parodies the music from Giuseppe Sarti?s Giulio Sabino in his insert arias, thus playing on the music which was totally familiar with the audience of that time. By reflecting on the musical-dramatic style of that time and discussing whether ?the word? or ?the music? should take priority, this masterpiece is considered to be a forerunner to Richard Strauss?s Capriccio. The heroic pastoral Daphnis et Egle was performed only once, on 29 October 1753, for the entertainment of King Louis XV at Fontainebleau and remained unpublished until today. This edition is based on Rameaus autograph manuscript, a copy of the separate parts, and the libretto published by Ballard in 1753. A comparison of the sources reveals two versions of the work: the original version and the one revised for Fontainebleau, whereby the differences lie mainly in the final divertissement. This edition recommends the Fontainebleau version - which is actually more complete in its musical form, in particular with its overture and two ariettas - but also reconstructs the original state of the final divertissement (presented in the appendix) before it was revised. / Chant Et Piano
