Upon Silence sets Long-legged Fly, a late poem of Yeats which portrays three momentous figures in history absorbed in silent contemplation: Julius Caesar planning a crucial military campaign, Helen of Troy as an adolescent in Sparta and Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel. The verses are set in a syllabic manner, while each successive chorus is set to increasingly lengthy melismas as, like the long-legged fly above water, the voice hovers above the strings. Alec Roth’s The Traveller is an oratorio for solo tenor, solo violin, SATB choir, children’s choir and an orchestra of strings, harp and percussion. In addition to writing six new poems for the piece, Vikram Seth has made English translations of twenty Indian texts from a rich variety of traditions and languages, including Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Tamil. Taking as its theme the Ages of Man, the work is divided into six main sections: Unborn – Child – Youth – Adult – Old – Dead, followed by a short epilogue. In this universal tale of Man’s journey through life, the role of The Traveller is taken by the solo violin, The Companions by the Choir and The Poet by the tenor soloist. The Traveller was commissioned jointly by the Salisbury, Chelsea and Lichfield Festivals with funds provided by the Arts Council of England and the PRS Foundation. It was first performed by Mark Padmore (tenor), Philippe Honoré (violin) and the Britten Sinfonia, conducted by the composer, with the Salisbury Festival Chorus and Salisbury Area Young Musicians Junior Choir, at Salisbury Cathedral on 31 May 2008. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as achurch composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. This is no workaday transcription: in addition to skilfully arranging seven Mendelssohn songs for strings and voice, Rasch has created a number of striking interludes to link the songs together. A score of the work, until Second World War, was held in the Berliner Sing-Akademie. It was written by J. Dirmar, the former cantor at St Nikolai in Berlin and consisted of a four-page printed text. Offertorium Zum Ostersonntag. Par EBERLIN JOHANN ERNST. Eberlin’s programmatic setting of the offertory “Terra tremuit” was written for the festive liturgy of Easter Sunday at Salzburg Cathedral, which in the 17th and 18th centuries was a center of the cultivation of the polyphonic offertory. Verses 9 and 10 of Psalm 76 [Vulgata 75], with their vivid description of the earth trembling and falling silent are Eberlin’s basis for the offertory. Eberlin depicts the earthquake by means of a written-out tremolo of the strings, and by staccato singing of the syllables of the word “tremuit”. The composition however is similar in quality and commitment to his other Mass in F major. Numerous manuscript copies all over Europe testify to the fortunate reception of the work in the eighteenth century. As was traditional in Naples, Pergolesi limited his composition to the “Kyrie” and “Gloria”. The festive character of the work is emphasized by the rich scoring for vocal soloists, five-part choir and a full orchestra of strings and winds. This edition, made with strict philological criteria, is based as its main source on a set of parts preserved partly in Naples, partly in Montecassino. These parts were made for aperformance conducted by the composer, who added various autograph annotations. Among the secondary sources are two period Neapolitan scores, today in Bologna and Dresden.
