In Gade’s understanding “Zion” forms “a kind of trilogy” together with the cantatas „Kalanus“ and “The Crusader“ which centres around the “longing for the true light“. The focus of „Zion“ is the history of the Jewish people where a people has received a promise. Molte sono le tecniche del canto elaborate nel corso dei secoli ma, come una sola è la perfetta intonazione di una nota, così uno solo è l’accordo acustico-aerodinamico che corrisponde al massimo grado di efficienza vocale, i cui effetti/causa sonorappresentati dalla facilità di emissione e dalla risonanza libera. La scuola di canto italiana storica (risalente al Sei/Settecento) ha delineato i principi fondamentali per raggiungere questa meta e tali principi sono dati dal senso di naturalezza globale, dalla purezza del suono, dal contatto dolce con l’energia edalla semplificazione degli strumenti di controllo della voce. La suprema forma di canto, resa possibile dal rispetto di questi principi, ha preso storicamente edesteticamente il nome di ‘belcanto’ e tecnicamente il nome di ‘canto sul fiato’. Questo libro tratta delle tecniche vocali più diffuse oggi: della loro struttura, dei loro pregi e difetti, e della loro origine storica. Nel canto, che è lo strumento più ‘mentale’ e insieme più ‘incarnato’, questa conoscenza si rivela fondamentaleper acquisire un’emissione di alto livello sia dal punto di vista funzionale, sia dal punto di vista estetico. ANTONIO JUVARRA è docente di canto al Conservatorio di Castelfranco Veneto. Ha insegnato alla Scuola dell’Opera Italiana di Bologna, all’Accademia d’arte lirica di Osimo e ai corsi di vocologia artistica presso la facoltà di medicina dell’Universitàdi Bologna. È stato invitato a tenere corsi e seminari di tecnica vocale al Mozarteum di Salisburgo e in numerosi conservatori e istituzioni musicali e universitarie italiane. As his letters to his mother show, Rossini was very proud of this opera, considering it an especially fine achievement that might appeal more to posterity than to the audiences of his day. In fact, it proved to be one of his most frequently performed opere serie. The present reduction for voice and piano, in two volumes, derives from the critical edition of the score, published by Fondazione Rossini Pesaro in collaboration with Casa Ricordi by Charles S. Brauner: the edition is based mainly on the autograph score now housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. This autograph score is complete but it is not completely autograph and many sections have offered some problems for the reconstruction of the text: the recitative in Act I and the Aria Mosè in Act II are not by Rossini, the first five recitatives in Act II are not in Rossini’s hand and may or may not be by Rossini, also not in Rossini’s hand is the Aria Amaltea, although undoubtedly by Rossini because borrowed from his earlier opera Ciro in Babilonia. Pärt was asked to write a work to be performed by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Pärt was inspired by the story of the martyrdom of Saint Cecilia and he embarked on a search for a suitable text in 1999. EDIZIONE NAZIONALE DELLE OPERE DI GIOVANNI BATTISTA PERGOLESI (Casa Ricordi in collaborazione con la Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini di Jesi) Based on the anonymous recasting of a libretto derived in turn from La fede tradita e vendicata by Francesco Silvani (1705), Il prigionier superbo by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was first performed on 5 September 1733 at the Teatro di San Bartolomeo in Naples. With this opera – his second dramma serio for San Bartolomeo in less than two years – the young composer (who had already acquired considerable professional stature in the city’s theatres, churches, and aristocratic circles) reprised a perennially popular subject centered aroundthe dramatic conflict between filial piety and devotion to one’s betrothed. Inserted between the opera’s three acts were the intermezzi of La serva padrona, which would soon go on to take all of Europe by storm. The primary source for this edition is a manuscript copy of the score currently housed in the Conservatorio di Musica “San Pietro a Majella” in Naples and prepared by Giuseppe Sigismondo, who was quite probably working from the now-lost autograph. Two other significant manuscript copies of the score also housed in Naples (respectively in the Biblioteca Oratoriana dei Girolamini and the aforementioned conservatory) were consulted, along with a number of manuscript copies of individual arias. The edition is furnished with a historical introduction, which traces the libretto’s complicated literary lineage and illustrates the circumstances of the opera’s commission, genesis, premiere, and subsequent history: and a critical apparatus containing detailed source descriptions and critical notes for both the text and the music. Composed in 1818 on commission from an unknown individual in Lisbon, Adina was left to languish some years until its premiere in 1826, with a single performance in that city remaining virtually the only one on record until the opera's revival in 1963. The present vocal score is based on the critical edition of the orchestral full score prepared by Fabrizio Della Seta and published by the Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro in collaboration with Casa Ricordi. This Edition reconstructs for the first time the structure of the autograph score, which reflects the collective contributions of at least five different hands: having composed only four entirely new numbers and repurposed another three from Sigismondo, Rossini relied upon collaborators and copyists for the remainder of the music. Della Seta's detailed examination of this fundamental document (housed at the Fondazione Rossini) together with an informed assessment of the secondary sources, including a complete manuscript copy (housed at the British Library in London), various manuscript vocal parts with Rossini's autograph interventions (housed in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels), and the first edition of the vocal score published by Ricordi between 1855 and 1859, additionally reveals how the libretto printed in Lisbon for that single historic performance in 1826 differed substantially from the narrative disposition of the autograph score, with ample cuts and modifications (among those the suppression of the Aria Alì and the addition of a Coro).
