Rihards
Dubra (born Latvia, 1964)
wrote his Symphony
No. 2 in 2014. It is
a large-scale work, over
30 minutes long, in three
movements (titled
'Visio', 'Cantus', 'Et
vidi...'), for large
orchestra comprising
triple wind and brass,
percussion and
harp.
Speaking of
symphonic writing, the
composer says: 'I don't
think a symphony should
speak about small,
everyday things and
issues; it should speak
of global, fundamental
and substantial things.
Only then does it justify
the name 'symphony'. It
must be something
serious.'

score (EP 73404) is now

Composer/arr
anger Sean O'Loughlin has
provided a refreshing new
setting of our National
Anthem. It was originally
written for orchestral
brass and percussion and
has been performed at
both MLB and NBA events.
The arrangement begins
with a bold fanfare to
set the tone, but also to
provide the motive glue
to hold the arrangement
together and create
something unique.
Creative harmonic usage
and colorful
orchestration really make
this version stand out
from the rest. There
have been many great
arrangements of our
National Anthem
throughout the years .
The responsibility of
creating one that truly
brought something new to
the mix was very daunting
. I was fortunate enough
to get an opportunity to
write this version for
the Oregon Symphony Brass
Section to perform at the
Portland Trail Blazers
NBA games . Subsequent
performances have
occurred with the
Baltimore Symphony at the
Baltimore Orioles MLB
games . At this time, it
is my supreme honor to
adapt this for the
advanced concert band .In
bringing something new, I
decided to start with a
bold fanfare to set the
tone for this great music
. Introducing some more
dissonant harmonies also
created a more intense
feel .The first stanza
includes a flowing
counter line in the horns
and alto saxophones . The
trumpets interject some
flourishes on the second
pass to further the
intensity . These
flourishes continue
“ . . . when the
rockets red glare!â€
The final push at m . 29
is colored with pulsating
16th notes in the
woodwinds that lead to
some dramatic harmony at
the fermata in m . 32 .
The opening fanfare then
returns to let everyone
know that it's time to
“Play
ball!â€.

Personal
Note My high school band
director, Clarence F.
Wroblewski, died on
November 24, 2018. In the
1950s, he was a pioneer
in the field of public
school instrumental music
in the Baltimore City. He
was my mentor and my dear
friend. It was his
guidance and
encouragement that set my
young life's course on
the path of music.
Performance Notes The
idea for this easy march
is a parade with horses,
hence the title Cadets'
Cavalcade. It may be
taught and performed in
common time, but the feel
is in 2 at the indicated
tempo. Directors who wish
to perform it a little
faster or slower than 80
should feel free to do
so. All cues are for
endurance considerations.
Bands that are capable of
playing from beginning to
end without rests may
ignore the cues. When
cymbals are just
following the bass drum
line, be certain that the
player observes the
proper
balance. Personal

Mount
Vernon Square derives its
title from the location
of the Peabody
Conservatory of Music in
Baltimore, Maryland. It
was here that the
composer Joseph Compello
took his first classes in
Music Theory from
Professor Haven Hensler,
to whom this march is
dedicated. After hearing
this march performed on
piano as part of final
exam requirements in a
Music Theory course,
Professor Hensler
encouraged further
exploration of music
composition, leading
Compello into a prolific
career writing pieces
like this theme, now
years later arranged for
full band as a concert
march. Performance Notes
The form of the march is
a standard A-BB-Trio-C-A.
Melodically, much of the
march is based on the
figure contained in mm. 8
and 9. Tempo,
articulation, and
dynamics in a standard
march style are essential
to a successful
interpretation. Pay
particular attention to
dynamics in the second
strain at m. 41. Strive
for a legato diminuendo
at the transition in mm.
63-65. The melody in the
Trio (m. 70) will also
require smooth
articulation from low
brass and woodwinds. The
Euphonium counter-melody
will be played only
during the repeat of the
Trio. The Breakup Strain
(m. 87) is, of course,
powerfully marcato as is
the reprise of the first
theme at m. 109. Mount

The march
Defenders Day is named
for the legal holiday in
Maryland which
commemorates the
successful defense of the
city of Baltimore on
September 12, 1814 from
an invading British force
during the War of 1812.
This event would lead to
the writing of the United
States of America's
national anthem, The
Star-Spangled Banner. The
form and style follow the
standard American march
format and is perfect for
festival performance.

The Springs (fanfare) -
“The Springsâ€

name for the town, and
this first movement
starts with a stirring
fanfare for brass and
percussion, opening with
bold unison horns. The
rest of the brass join in
and woodwind add
decorative figures. After
a short change of style,
the opening material
reappears to close the
movement. 2. Seven Falls
- Seven Falls is a
spectacular waterfall
near to the town which
cascades 181 feet in
seven distinct steps down
a solid cliff of pikes
peak granite. In this
movement, high woodwinds
describe the sparkling
water as it descends to a
popular lookout post near
the bottom of the falls.
3. Pikes Peak - To the
north-west of the town
and reaching an altitude
14,110 feet, Pikes Peak
is the farthest east of
the big peaks in the
Rocky Mountain chain,
which contributed to its
early fame among
explorers and pioneers,
and made it the symbol of
the 1859 Gold Rush to
Colorado with the slogan,
“Pikes Peak or
Bust.†It is the
second-most visited
mountain in the world
behind Japan's Mount
Fuji. This atmospheric
movement describes the
majesty of the mountain
and is based around the
fanfare from the first
movement. Opening on a
solitary bassoon, it is
not long before the main
theme appears under
bubbling woodwinds. The
music reaches a
passionate climax at
which point the opening
fanfare reappears to
bring the whole work to a
close.
