For the opening ceremony of the fiftieth anniversary of NATO, James L. Hosay was commissioned to write a special march. The heads of state of all member states of NATO were present at this event. According to instructions, the march had to be a combination of marches in American, Western European and Eastern European style. This way, a concert march was written to outline the history of the greatest alliance ever of countries working together. Now your band and audience can experience this piece of world history in a tribute to the Alliance of the Free!

Selon les instructions données au compositeur, l’œuvre devait combiner les différents styles des marches d’Amérique du Nord, d’Europe occidentale et d’Europe de l’Est. partir de ces éléments, James L. Hosay a composé une marche de concert qui illustre l’histoire de la plus grande alliance ayant jamais existé entre des pays collaborant au sein d’une même organisation. Cet hommage rendu l’Alliance des Pays Libres permet de célébrer lors d’un concert une part importante de l’histoire mondiale.

Klezmer was originally the name given to the music of the Yiddish speaking Jews in Eastern Europe. The klezmer musicians played dance music, mainly at weddings. Historically string instruments such as the violin were predominantly used, but later (after ca. 1900) other instruments and in particular the clarinet were added as melodic instruments. In klezmer music in addition to Balkan influences oriental and gipsy influences can also be found. Jacob de Haan composed Klezmania in this style, based on the well-known Hebrew song Hava Nagila.

Klezmer is van oorsprong de benaming voor de muziek van de Jiddisch sprekende joden in met name Oost-Europa. De klezmermuzikanten speelden onder meer dansmuziek op bruiloften. Van oudsher werden voornamelijk snaarinstrumenten alsde viool gebruikt. Later (na ca. 1900) kwam daar vooral de klarinet als melodie-instrument bij. In de klezmermuziek zijn naast veel Balkan-invloeden ook oriëntaalse en zigeunerinvloeden terug te vinden. In deze stijl componeerde Jacobde Haan Klezmania, waarin hij het bekende Hebreeuwse lied Hava Nagila verwerkte.

Mit Klezmer wurde ursprünglich die Musik der jiddisch sprechenden Juden in Osteuropa bezeichnet. Klezmer-Musiker spielten vornehmlich Tanzmusik auf Hochzeiten und Familienfeiern. In der oft zugleich fröhlichen und melancholischen Klezmer-Musik finden sich neben Anklängen der Musik des Balkans auch Einflüsse aus dem Orient und der Zigeunermusik. In diesem einzigartigen Stil komponierte Jacob de Haan sein Stück Klezmania, in welchem er das bekannte hebräische Lied Hava Nagila verwendete.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihr Blasorchester überzeugen wird!

This unusual concert work, commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg, is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept, which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy, the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.

Aan dit concertwerk - geschreven voor de Harmonie Concorde uit Sanem in Luxemburg - liggen twee basisideeën ten grondslag. Als eerste de sociaal-economische context van het stadje: de mijnbouw heeft decennialang mensen uit diverselanden aangetrokken, met name Portugal. Dit wordt ge llustreerd door de verwerking van een authentiek arbeidslied uit dat land. De tweede pijler is de Europese gedachte die in Luxemburg duidelijk aanwezig is. Dit komt muzikaal totuiting in een dynamische thematiek en citaatjes uit Ode an die Freude van Beethoven en het Te Deum van Charpentier - de herkenningstune voor Eurovisie-uitzendingen. Concordia, een werk dat verschillende elementenin zich verenigt, staat symbool voor eenheid.

Zwei Bilder des Landes Luxemburg bilden die Grundlage dieses ungewöhnlichen Werkes: Zunächst beschreiben schöne, teilweise düstere Klänge die Bergbauregion Luxemburg und ihre vielen Gastarbeiter.Mit Zitaten aus Beethovens Ode an die Freude und Charpentiers Te Deum wird Luxemburg als Sitz einiger wichtiger europäischer Institutionen vorgestellt. Der gemeinsame Nenner und Inspiration zum Titel Concordia - lateinisch für Einheit - ist das funktionierende Miteinander vielfältiger Kulturen und Interessen in so einem kleinen Land.

Concordia est une oeuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Concorde de Sanem au Luxembourg. Cette pièce de concert inhabituelle s’appuie sur deux éléments principaux : l’évolution du contexte économique et social de cette ville luxembourgeoise située dans une région minière et l’idéal européen souligné par une riche palette de nuances et l’utilisation de quelques fragments de l’Hymne la Joie et du Te Deum.

Concordia è un brano commissionato a Jan Van der Roost dall’Orchestra di Fiati Concorde di Sanem in Lussemburgo. Questo inusuale brano da concerto si appoggia su due elementi principali: l’evoluzione del contesto economico e sociale di questa citt lussemburghese situata in una regione mineraria, e l’ideale europeo evidenziato da una ricca gamma di suoni e dall’utilizzo di qualche frammento dell’Inno alla Gioia e del Te Deum.

This hymn was commissioned by â??Antwerpen 93â?. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated â??Cultural Capital of Europeâ? for 1993. The work-group â??animatieâ? took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated.The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

Viele gebräuchliche Weihnachtslieder stammen ebenfalls nichtaus England. Philip Sparke gelang es jedoch, eine abwechslungsreiche Sammlung von Liedern aus seiner Heimat zu diesem schönen englischen Weihnachtslieder-Festival “ zu formen.Die optional einsetzbaren Chorstimmen sind unter der Artikelnummer AMP227-050 separat erhältlich.
