The
CANTATA No. 4: CHRIST LAG
IN TODES BANDEN, BWV 4,
is one of the earliest
church cantatas by J.S.
Bach (1685-1750). Bach
wrote it for an
application to a job
opportunity at a Lutheran
church in Mulhausen. It
is the first of his
cantatas to construct its
textual and melodic
material on a chorale.
His first cantata for
Easter Sunday, it was
later revised in Leipzig
in 1724 and 1725 with
additional instrumental
parts in order to harness
the rich musical
resources available to
the composer. The
original version has not
survived. This edition by
Moritz Hauptmann was
created in 1851 as part
of the Bach-Gesellschaft
Ausgabe (Bach Society
Edition).

Mit Fried

is one of the incostable
summits of Johann
Sebastian Bach's cantata
production. This
completely new edition -
with organ part, note
well - has just about
nothing in common with
our previous rental
material except for the
name of the publisher!
Eva-Maria Hodel, the
editor of this first
modern-day critical
edition, has gone back to
the original sources -
which was no small feat,
considering that Bach's
score is apparently lost.
Fortunately, a set of
parts corrected by Bach
himself is still
extant.

BACH: Sinfonia from
Cantata 29: Etude on One
Staff with Two Hands (5
pages) presents a unique
and accessible
transcription of
Bach’s exciting
Sinfonia from Cantata 29,
which Bach reworked from
his previously composed
Preludio from Partita No.
3 for Solo Violin. The
present edition notates
Bach’s original
solo in the treble clef
played with alternating
hands: stems up = R.H.
and stems down = L.H.
Sharing the solo between
the two hands results in
a difficulty half that of
romantic, virtuoso
transcriptions that add
chords and accompaniment
material in the bass
clef. This unique
transcription offers
pianists Grades 5 and up
a fun and rewarding study
which fosters evenness of
touch and tone and
explores innovative
fingerings and hand
crossings. This
transcription of
Bach’s exciting
Sinfonia from Cantata 29
has something for
everyone — piano
students, teachers, and
concert artists alike!
