In 1845 Franz
Liszt embarked on a
project to compose an
Italian opera based on
Lord Byron’s
tragedy, Sardanapalus
(1821). It was central to
his ambition to attain
status as a major
European composer, with
premieres variously
planned for Milan,
Vienna, Paris and London.
But he abandoned it half
way through, and the
music he completed has
lain silently for 170
years.
Liszt’s difficulty
in obtaining a libretto
meant that composition
only began in April 1850.
He completed virtually
all the music for Act 1
in an annotated
piano-vocal score of 111
pages, contained within
his N4 music
‘sketch
book’. The unnamed
librettist was an Italian
poet and political
prisoner, seemingly
living under house
arrest, and a close
acquaintance of Cristina
Belgiojoso. His libretto
survives as underlay in
the N4 sketchbook and has
been critically
reconstructed and
translated.
Sardanapalo is
Liszt’s only
mature opera. While he
consistently referred to
it in French, as
Sardanapale, the
published title of the
Italian opera would
almost certainly have
used the Italian name,
hence this forms the
title of the first
edition. There are three
solo roles and a chorus
of concubines. The
manuscript was previously
thought to be fragmentary
and partially illegible,
but it was finally
deciphered to
international acclaim in
March 2017.
Liszt’s score
offers a richly melodic
style, with elements from
Bellini and Verdi
alongside glimmers of
Wagner and the symphonic
poems ahead: a unique
mixture of Italianate
pastiche and mid-century
harmonic innovation. It
remains quintessentially
Lisztian. The opera sets
Byron’s tragedy
about war and peace in
ancient Assyria: the last
King, effeminate in his
tastes, is drawn to wine,
concubines and feasts
more than politics and
war: his subjects find
him dishonourable (a
‘man queen’)
and military rebels seek
to overthrow him, but are
pardoned, for the King
rejects the ‘deceit
of glory’ built on
others’ suffering:
this leads only to a
larger uprising, the
Euphrates floods its
banks, destroying the
castle’s main
defensive wall, and
defeat is inevitable: the
King sends his family
away and orders that he
be burned alive with his
lover, amid scents and
spices in a grand
inferno. As Byron put it:
‘not a mere pillar
formed of cloud and
flame, but a light to
lessen ages.’ For
his part, Liszt told a
friend that his finale
‘will even aim to
set fire to the entire
audience!’
This critical edition
includes a detailed study
on the genesis of
Liszt’s
Sardanapalo in English,
German, and Hungarian,
the libretto in the
original Italian as well
as in English, German,
and Hungarian
translation, several
facsimile pages of
Liszt’s
manuscript, and a
detailed Critical
Report.

insky’s 1918 Three
Pieces for Solo Clarinet
has long been savored by
clarinetists as a rare
gem in the
instrument’s
repertory, full of
rhythmic drive and
Stravinsky’s jazzy
neo-classicism. Composer
and clarinetist Gregory
M. Barrett’s
remarkable adaptation for
3 clarinets is a tour de
force, assimilating
Stravinsky’s
harmonic, rhythmic, and
contrapuntal style to
create a striking
addition to the clarinet
literature. Igor
Stravinsky’s Three
Pieces for Solo Clarinet
(1918) is a core work in
clarinetists’
repertoire, and I
havereimagined it for the
convivial grouping of
three players. The
arrangement contains all
of
Stravinsky’sorigin
al, but now his solo line
is shared among three in
a new matrix of harmony,
imitation,
andcounterpoint.The molto
tranquillo first piece
develops from the
emphasized C# in
Stravinsky’s first
measure andmoves to a
somewhat somber mood when
C# is revealed to be the
dominant of F# minor.
Withincreasing expansion
of tessitura in the
sustained harmonies, the
sun comes out in the last
phrase with ajoyous Eb
major chord.The
circus-like second piece
finds the three clarinets
whirling in the air in
synchronized trapeze
artiststyle. The emphasis
is on imitation and fluid
hand-offs. Chords with
major 7ths and 2nds
contrast withtriadic
harmony. Following the
cat and mouse middle
section, where dancing
patterns of twos
andthrees alternate, the
summit of the big top is
reached again just before
the players settle down
to earthwith a welcome C
major chord of
respite.The ragtime
burlesque of
Stravinsky’s third
piece is heightened by
homophonic rhythm among
the threeplayers. Each
clarinet part has its own
specialty. Clarinet 1
loves 32nd notes,
Clarinet 2 shows off with
fasttriplets, and
Clarinet 3 likes the low
notes and in general
supporting its friends.
Quartal harmony
withstacked 4ths is
emphasized, but where
Stravinsky’s
melody suggests triads, I
have taken his hint.
Thepropulsive rhythms are
truly exciting, and with
the wink of an eye, the
music ends all too
soon.

his contribution by

written out with only a
few cases of
doubt”. With only
two movements and a
playing time of
about nine minutes it is
at its existing
length the shortest of
Holmboe's string
quartets. The first
movement takes the form
of one long arch in a
rocking triple time which
constantly shiftsamong
different tempo and pulse
sensations. At the same
time the rhythmic
energy increases
until the movement, in a
faster Con moto
tempo accelerates to
a more flowing 12/8 time,
coloured both
rhythmically by
cross-rhythms in
duple time and timbrally
by harmonics in the
viola. In its middle
section, Con fuoco,
the movement
culminates in both tempo
and expression until it
falls calm in brief
recapitulations in
reverse order of the
first two sections. The
rocking feeling continues
in the second movement,
but now at a more
extroverted level from
the outset, Allegro
and pizzicato. The
energy builds up
further as the mood
intensifies to Con
fuoco, while all
instruments go over to
bowed playing, but like
the first movement, this
movement ends Adagio
here however not as
a gradual attenuation but
through a sudden shift in
tempo to a calm,
imitative passage before
the movement slowly thins
out to the almost
inaudible through a last,
dense, open sounding
chord with a brief violin
solo above it.

Holmboe's wife MeLa May
Holmboe, and was given
its first performance by
the Kontra Quartet on
22nd March 1997 at the
Carl Nielsen Academy of
