Work on this
piece began in the spring
of 1899 durng Kar owiczs
studies in Berlin and he
finished it after
graduating and returning
home in June 1902. Its
premiere took place on
March 21, 1903 in Berlin,
and the Polish premiere
on April 7, 1903 in Lviv.
The symphony has a
classic, four-movement
structure, but in terms
of architecture it is
much closer to symphonic
poems. It consists of the
movements: 1. Andante.
Allegro 2. Andante non
troppo 3. Vivace 4.
Allegro maestoso. ''In
terms of orchestration
and instrumentation
technique it represents
Kar owiczs early,
academic period. The
composer still used
double wind enriched with
piccolo flute, unlike in
his later orchestral
works the symphonic
poems. The orchestration
of the work indicates
that the composer was
guided by Tchaikovskys
symphonic model. Kar
owicz here still
willingly operates with
various sound blocks of
entire instrumental
groups, treating them in
a choral manner, with
tight chordal pillars''
(Leszek Polony). Before
the Polish premiere the
composer gave a
comprehensive literary
programme of the work in
the Lviv newspaper S owo
Polskie, in which he
referred to each
consecutive movement of
the Symphony. In his last
words he wrote, ''We hear
a hymn of revival, at
first quiet and sweet,
then wider and wider, and
fuller. Already the time
has come; to hear the
fanfare. Only one more
step! And although the
spirits fall again in
doubt, we hear a powerful
and solemn hymn of
rebirth.''.

In late
September or early
October 1821 Schubert and
his close friend, Franz
von Schober, vacationed
in the countryside of
Lower Austria. Their
first stopover was at
Ochsenburg Castle, which
belonged to the Bishop of
St. Pölten (a close
relative of
Schober’s), after
which they moved on to
St. Pölten itself.
Roughly a year earlier,
two stage works by
Schubert had been
performed in Vienna: the
one-act singspiel Die
Zwillingsbrüder and
the melodrama Die
Zauberharfe. The
librettos were both
written by the seasoned
Viennese playwright Georg
von Hofmann, who blamed
the press for the
indifferent reception the
two works were given by
the audience. Schubert
and Schober now decided,
it would seem, to write a
grand romantic opera
uninfluenced by the
workaday world of the
theatre and beholden
solely to their own ideas
of what an opera should
be.
Not until 24
June 1854 was the opera
finally performed in
Weimar, under the baton
of Franz Liszt. It only
achieved success,
however, in an
arrangement by Johann
Nepomuk Fuchs that was
staged on many German and
Austrian stages in
1881–2, allegedly
with brilliant
acclaim.

composed in early 1822 at
the age of 13, is
Mendelssohn's first
creative venture in the
field of church music on
a larger scale. It is a
direct result of his
composition studies under
the director of the
Berlin Singakademie Carl
Friedrich Zelter, but was
no longer wholly a
student work because the
young composer hoped that
Zelter would provide him
with an opportunity to
perform this work with
the Singakademie. The
enthusiasm for Handel and
Bach which was sustained
by the performances at
the Singakademie
influenced Mendelssohn's
early creative style. In
the Gloria Mendelssohn
sought to emulate the
model of the large-scale
baroque cantata. The
concluding fugue, the
mysterious Qui tollis and
lyrical solos ensembles
in the place of solo
arias give testimony to
Mendelssohn's great
talent and willingness to

Impresario) was composed
in the spring of 1786 to
fulfill a commission from
Joseph II for performance
during a visit to Vienna
by the Governor-General
of the Netherlands. The
visitors were meant to be
entertained with a short
German and an Italian
musical comedy during a
festival arranged on
short notice in
Schonbrunn Palace. The
choice of composers fell
to Mozart and Salieri.
Both pieces spoofed the
theatrical practices of
the day. Der
Schauspieldirektor, by
Gottlieb Stephanie the
Younger, has a
loosely-constructed plot
that hinges on the vanity
of opera singers and the
empty-headedness of many
traveling companies.
Frank Lustig wants to
create a new theatrical
troupe, for which Herr
Eiler is willing to
supply money, but only on
condition that his lady
friend is allowed to
join. In the course of
the piece, appearances
are made by other ladies
with resonant names who
want to be retained as
singers and who attempt
to outdo each other until
reason is allowed to

This piece was
commissioned by
Nordhordland Brass
Seminar in 1990 and
written for a youth
band.
The title
referes to a story from
norse mythology.
“The Binding of the
Wolf” is not a
programmatic piece of
music, but I felt that
there was a kind of
coherence between the
music and the dramatic
story:
“...The
wolf Fenrir was one of
the demonic offspring of
Loki, and as he grew up
in Asgard among the gods,
he became so huge and
fierce that only Tyr was
willing to feed him. It
was decided that he must
be bound, and Odin in his
wisdom caused the cunning
dwarfs to forge a chain
which could not be
broken. It was made
from the invisible and
yet potent powers ofthe
world, such as the roots
of a mountain, the noise
of a moving cat, the
breath of a fish.
When completed, this
chain seemed to be no
more than a silken cord,
but the wolf refused to
let it be laid upon him
unless one of the gods
would put a hand between
his jaws as a pledge that
it was harmless. Only
Tyr was prepared to do
this, and when the wolf
found that the chain was
unbreakable, the gods
rejoiced, but Tyr lost
his hand. The binding
of the wolf may be seen
as a means of protecting
the world of men, as well
as that of the gods, from
destruction. The
story of the god losing
his hand appears to be
one of the fundamental
myths of nothern
Europe...”.
