About
Jónas
HalgrÃmsson
(1807-1845) was an
Icelandic poet, author
and naturalist, who is
considered one of
Iceland's most renowned
poets. Considered a
Romantic writer, the
strong imagery in his
poetry was influenced
heavily by the landscapes
around him.The imagery,
excitement, and curiosity
of the universe leapt off
the page and the music
almost wrote itself.Â
Reflecting on the cosmos
and origin of the
heavens, the poetry
elicits excitement and
stirs spatial imagery -

watched the stars...rise
from the still stream of

almost child-like
fascination with the
universe and its
expansion and progression
fuels the perpetual
rhythm of the work as it
continually pushes
forward.A good friend
asked if I would write a
song for her ensemble.
The original voicing, for
SAB choir, contained
parameters in that it had
to be three-part with a
limited range in the Bass
part. With these
stipulations I began to
write. I searched for
something that would be
exciting for them and
landed on Jonas
Halgrimsson’s
writings. I believe it is
equally as exciting,
accessible and
challenging for treble
choirs.Note to the

Johannes
Brahms, born May 7, 1833
in Hamburg, Germany and
died April 3, 1897 in
Vienna where he lived
most of his life. Brahms
is one of the most famous
composers of the Romantic
period (1830-1920)
although his music has
many elements of the
Classical period (1750 to
1830) as he followed many
of the practices of
Classical composers
Haydn, Mozart and
Beethoven. In addition to
being a composer, he was
also well-known as a
pianist and conductor.
Brahms began writing the
Requiem (also known as
the German Requiem, Opus
45) soon after his mother
died in February 1865
which caused him great
grief. In April of that
year, he completed the
first, second and fourth
movements and completed
the rest of the seven
movements in May of 1868.
How Lovely is Thy
Dwelling Place (Wie
Lieblich sind Deine
Wohnungen) was the fourth
movement of his seven
movement work.
Originally written for
SATB voices in E-flat
major, this seamlessly
similar arrangement for
SAB voices, now in C
major, affords all voices
comfortable ranges.
Although, it is
approximately 5 minutes
and 30 seconds in length,
it is perceived to be
much shorter because of
the contrasting stylistic
sections within the work.
How Lovely is Thy
Dwelling Place is one of
the most beautiful choral
pieces by Brahms, perhaps
in the entire Romantic
period. Although
Brahms wrote the original
piano reduction, in this
edition, it has been made
more accessible for
pianists with a wide
range of skills. Pay
close attention to the
dynamic markings
throughout the piece,
making them apparent to
the voices, conductor,
and audience. I hope you
enjoy singing this
beautiful and timeless
piece by Johannes Brahms!

Richard
Hageman (1881-1966) was a
born into a family of
musicians. As a pianist,
he performed concerts
from the age of six, and
his mastery of this
instrument is evident in
the intricate
accompaniment of this
piece. After coming to
America, (originally as
accompanist to touring
French singer Yvette
Guilbert), he worked for
a period of years as a
conductor and pianist for
the Metropolitan Opera in
New York. It was during
this period of time that
he composed Do Not Go, My
Love for solo voice,
originally dedicating it
to the operatic tenor,
George Hamlin. Hageman's
later career included
work in Hollywood, first
as a conductor, but later
as a film-score composer
and actor. Do Not Go, My
Love is well-known among
classical soloists, and
many recordings exist.
The SSA version of this
American standard brings
a vocal classic to
younger singers who might
not yet possess the
dexterity to perform the
original solo.
Rabindranath Tagore
(1861-1941) was an Indian
polymath; someone who
possesses deep knowledge

disparate subjects.
Tagore's expertise

music, and poetry. Tagore
won the Nobel Prize in
Literature in 1913,
contributing to his
receiving knighthood from
King George V in 1915,
but Tagore renounced his
knighthood after the 1919
Jallianwala Bagh
massacre. There are five
Tagore museums in
Bangladesh and three in
India; at least three
universities bear his
name. Do Not Go, My Love
is taken from The
Gardener, a collection of
poems translated from
Bengali by Tagore and
published in 1915. Number
34 in the collection, and
taken by itself, the poem
might be interpreted as
someone watching over the
deathbed of a lover or
child; however, the
larger narrative woven
through The Gardener
suggests a romantic
relationship being clung
to by the speaker.

This poem
has long been a favorite
of singers due to its
deep passion and
expressive imagery, not
to mention the warm
vowels at the end of each
line. In this artistic
setting, Greg Gilpin
incorporates a
contemporary harmonic
palette, expressive tempo
nuances, and elegant
dynamic shading to form a
colorful garden of sound.
The final chord suggests
the rose/thorn quality of
love, as singers sustain
sweet dissonance. Give
special consideration to
the S.S.A. voicing---the
romantic text may have
great appeal to your
ladies.

The
title says it all. It's
the story of the ballet,
set to the music of the
ballet, and it only takes
. . . (you guessed it) .
. . three minutes to
perform. Terrific!

You may
have studied this beloved
Schubert art song in
voice lessons, and now
you can share it with
developing choirs in a
well-constructed,
approachable arrangement.
The choice of key fits
comfortably within range
and the Romantic era
harmonies are easy to
hear. Whether there are
two or four hands at the
piano, listeners will be
hooked by the rippling
water and leaping fish in
the playful
accompaniment. Concerned
about the German words? A
rhyming English
translation provides a
charming option. Listen
to Fischer-Dieskau's
iconic recording as an
introduction to the piece
or an extension of
learning.

A spry and
enchanting adaptation of
Edvard Grieg's magical

heaps of holiday cheer

slice of swoony guitar
pop. Strike up the band

romantic imagery, while

the innocence of
refreshing lyrics. This
well-crafted arrangement
lends the most-memorable
instrumental motive to
the voices, and shares
the satisfying 90s pop
harmonies with the entire
choir. An airy
medium-tempo ballad with
plenty of heart.

A warm
adagio introduction
breaks into a joyous
Hosanna chorus in this
44-measure homophonic
masterwork. Taken from
Schubert's Mass No. 4,
this edition offers
sensible vocal ranges,
editorial dynamic and
metronome markings, plus
a complete IPA guide for
the brief Latin text. The
orchestral parts have
been reduced to a
playable piano
accompaniment while
preserving the Classical
characteristics of the
original work.

The
nightingale has long been
associated with melodic
musical writing and
romantic texts. The
tenderness of the text is
displayed in this choral
setting that includes a
delicate piano
accompaniment and
optional flute. Carefully
placed dynamics help
create the mood and feel
of this well-written
piece and makes a
beautiful selection for
women as well as young
treble singers.
