Telemannâ
€™s passion oratorio
“Der Tod
Jesu†was composed
in 1754-55, roughly at
the same time as the
same-named highly
regarded work by Carl
Heinrich Graun. Both
pieces are settings of
the same libretto by Karl
Wilhelm Ramler. In this
late work, Telemann
consciously contrasts the
carefully crafted
recitatives with
musically reduced solemn
choruses to obtain an
emotional reading of the
Passion text.
This
vocal score complements
the Urtext score of this
moving passion oratorio
which is published as
part of the “Georg
Philipp Telemann Musical
Worksâ€. The
complete orchestral
material is available on
hire.

During the
late 17th century English
musicians celebrated each
year on 22 November the
feast of St. Cecilia, the
patron saint of music,
with special concerts and
church services. With his
Ode for St. Cecilia's Day
Handel rejuvenated the
tradition of this
festival on St. Cecilia's
Day in 1732. This
so-called little St.
Cecilia Ode is a
musically joyful
glorification of the
power of music: two
festive choruses frame
five charming arias in
each of which a solo
instrument is used for
contrasting effect in the
baroque manner. Handel
allows the soloists a
wealth of freedom to
improvise and to display
their skills. This is
especially the case for
the organ, which was his
favorite instrument.

Two settings
of the Te Deum by Jan
Dismas Zelenka have been
survived: the Te Deum in
D major ZWV 145 of ca.
1724 and the present Te
Deum a due cori in D
major ZWV 146, which was
composed in 1731. Whereas
the Te Deum ZWV 145 is
scored for five voices
(soli e tutti) and an
orchestra including two
trumpets and timpani, the
setting of the Te Deum a
due cori, which includes
five soloists and two
four-part choirs, as well
as four trumpets and
timpani, and soloistic
flauti traversi is
magnificently realized in
a more decisive manner.
The large, solemn scoring
suggests that the work
was composed for a
worship service on the
occasion of the birth of
the Electoral Princess
Maria Josepha of
Saxony.

Since its
first complete
performance in 1868 in
the Cathedral of Bremen,
Brahms's Ein deutsches
Requiem is, without
question, one of the key
works in the history of
the oratorio. The
reputation of the work is
based not only on its
unusually concentrated
musical structure, but
also on the original
conception of the text:
Brahms assembled
important passages from
both the Old and New
Testaments in Luther's
translation so that
thoughts on sorrow and
consolation would
obviously refer to one
another. In contrast to
many other oratorios of
the 19th century Brahms
places the choir, the
voice of the community,
in the center of this
interdenominational
celebration of the dead.

The Stabat
Mater is the last work
composed by Giuseppe
Verdi. He completed it in
1897 at the age of 84.
One year later it was
published with the
somewhat earlier Te Deum
as part of the Quattro
pezzi sacri. Verdi set
Mary's meditation in the
face of her crucified
son, a classic of
Medieval Latin poetry, in
an operatically
expressive style for
choir and large
orchestra. Verdi's Stabat
Mater is now published
for the first time in a
