The Hida High
School is in a highland
city called Takayama in
Gifu Prefecture. Takayama
City has some of the
highest mountains in
Japan, atmospheric rows
of houses and streets,
and a beautiful
landscape. The
magnificent views from
these mountains can be
described as a paradise
above the clouds. When
the composer visited
there in the summer of
2001, the lovely flowers
spreading through the
valley and the refreshing
air welcomed him. The
flowers looked as if they
were fashionably dressed
and fully enjoying
conversation and a short
summer at a reunion
party. The composer was
inspired by this scenery
to compose this piece.
The musical party opens
with happy greetings of a
reunion andjoyful themes
follow one after another.
A light xylophone solo, a
waltz and an adagio
featuring alternate solos
by alto saxophone,
euphonium and trumpet
lead to a brilliant
finale featuring brass
and percussion played in
irregular time. A
beautiful musical picture
that your band will enjoy
performing for many
years.

In 2006 Brabant
will be celebrating
it’s 900th anniversary.
On May 13th 1106 the
count Van Leuven was
appointed duke of
Brabant. This was the
birth of the duchy of
Brabant. For centuries
this duchy, situated in
the heart of the
Netherlands, was the
primary of the seventeen
provinces in the
Lowlands. Brabant formed
with it’s capital
cities Brussels, Leuven,
Antwerp and
‘s-Hertogenbosch the
focal point for politics,
culture and economy. The
revolution against Spain
(1566-1648) caused a
fracture between the
North and South. The old
duchy was divided into a
Dutch and Belgian part.
Even though each had
their own historical
background, the bond
forged in the past was
partially keptalive. To
this day we still have a
duke of Brabant.
Brabantia Aeterna takes
you on a musical journey
through 900 years of
Brabant history. A
fascinating journey
portraying war and peace,
love and grief,
prosperity and adversity,
development and
deterioration. Listen to
how monks chanted, bells
tolled and churches were
built. Or take the
thirteenth and fourteenth
centuries with their
bustling markets,
builders of cities or the
bleating of countless
sheep across the heather.
The plague, tribulations,
soldiers and political
bickering in the
following centuries. Hear
how the industrialisation
of the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries
provided prosperity for
the region and how to
this day the following
saying still applies:
‘the road to Brabant
leads to a warmer
world’ Brabantia
Aeterna was commissioned
by the Brabantse Bond van
Muziekverenigingen
(Brabant Music Society)
in honour of its fifth
anniversary.
In
2006 bestaat Brabant 900
jaar. Op 13 mei 1106
kreeg de graaf van Leuven
de titel van hertog van
Brabant. Hiermee was het
hertogdom Brabant
geboren. Eeuwenlang was
dit hertogdom, gelegen in
het hart van de
Nederlanden, het eerstein
rang van de zeventien
gewesten van de Lage
Landen. Brabant vormde
met zijn hoofdsteden
Brussel, Leuven,
Antwerpen en
's-Hertogenbosch het
brandpunt van bestuur,
cultuur en economie. De
Opstand tegen Spanje
(1566-1648) brachtechter
een scheuring tussen
Noord en Zuid teweeg. Het
oude hertogdom viel
uiteen in een Nederlands
en een Belgisch deel.
Hoewel ieder zijn eigen
weg in de geschiedenis
ging, zou de band die in
het verleden was gesmeed
gedeeltelijkblijven
bestaan. Vandaag de dag
hebben we nog steeds een
hertog van Brabant.
Brabantia Aeterna neemt u
mee op een muzikale reis
door 900 jaar Brabant.
Het is een boeiende tocht
langs oorlog en vrede,
lief en leed, voorspoed
entegenslag, bloei en
verval. Luister hoe
vroeger de monikken
zongen, de klokken
luidden en kerken werden
gebouwd. Of neem de
dertiende en veertiende
eeuw met zijn drukke
marktgeluiden, de bouwers
van steden of het geblaat
van tallozeschapen op de

In 1845 Franz
Liszt embarked on a
project to compose an
Italian opera based on
Lord Byron’s
tragedy, Sardanapalus
(1821). It was central to
his ambition to attain
status as a major
European composer, with
premieres variously
planned for Milan,
Vienna, Paris and London.
But he abandoned it half
way through, and the
music he completed has
lain silently for 170
years.
Liszt’s difficulty
in obtaining a libretto
meant that composition
only began in April 1850.
He completed virtually
all the music for Act 1
in an annotated
piano-vocal score of 111
pages, contained within
his N4 music
‘sketch
book’. The unnamed
librettist was an Italian
poet and political
prisoner, seemingly
living under house
arrest, and a close
acquaintance of Cristina
Belgiojoso. His libretto
survives as underlay in
the N4 sketchbook and has
been critically
reconstructed and
translated.
Sardanapalo is
Liszt’s only
mature opera. While he
consistently referred to
it in French, as
Sardanapale, the
published title of the
Italian opera would
almost certainly have
used the Italian name,
hence this forms the
title of the first
edition. There are three
solo roles and a chorus
of concubines. The
manuscript was previously
thought to be fragmentary
and partially illegible,
but it was finally
deciphered to
international acclaim in
March 2017.
Liszt’s score
offers a richly melodic
style, with elements from
Bellini and Verdi
alongside glimmers of
Wagner and the symphonic
poems ahead: a unique
mixture of Italianate
pastiche and mid-century
harmonic innovation. It
remains quintessentially
Lisztian. The opera sets
Byron’s tragedy
about war and peace in
ancient Assyria: the last
King, effeminate in his
tastes, is drawn to wine,
concubines and feasts
more than politics and
war: his subjects find
him dishonourable (a
‘man queen’)
and military rebels seek
to overthrow him, but are
pardoned, for the King
rejects the ‘deceit
of glory’ built on
others’ suffering:
this leads only to a
larger uprising, the
Euphrates floods its
banks, destroying the
castle’s main
defensive wall, and
defeat is inevitable: the
King sends his family
away and orders that he
be burned alive with his
lover, amid scents and
spices in a grand
inferno. As Byron put it:
‘not a mere pillar
formed of cloud and
flame, but a light to
lessen ages.’ For
his part, Liszt told a
friend that his finale
‘will even aim to
set fire to the entire
audience!’
