(1892-1955) was the most
important Finnish pianist
during the first decades
of the 1900s. In his
lifetime he also was one
of the country's most
famous composers.
Hannikainen studied
composition with Erkki
Melartin, Franz Schreker
and Maximilian Steinberg.
His piano techers include
Elli Rangman-Bjorlin and
Alexander Siloti. Piano
Sonata C minor Op. 1 was
completed in 1912, and is
one of the largest-scale
romantic piano
compositions in the
Finnish piano repertoire.
The work is a joyride of
flowing national
romanticsm filled with
youthful energy. Some
technical influence from
Chopin and Liszt is
evident, as is from
master Sibelius, the
major figure in Finnish
music at the time. The
Piano Sonata is published
now for the first time -
and directly as an Urtext
edition. Pianist Dmus
Risto-Matti Marin and
music engraver Jani
Kyllonen have studied all
surviving manuscript
sources, resulting in a
worthy edition of this
great work for piano.

this rollicking piece in
A minor introduces
compound time with an
opening (and closing)
section in 12/8. The fast
flowing music of the
opening, vividly
suggestive of a ship
slicing through the
waves, returns in a
higher key (B minor)
after a warmly scored,
sweepingly melodic middle
section. This is a piece
whose sophistication is
an excellent showcase for
a more advanced
performing
group. Written in 12/8
in A minor,
America’s Cup
evokes the intensity and
momentum of a wild sea
with driving triplets,
sweeping melodies, and
accented downbeats. The
A-material from the
opening measure is played
aggressively but lightly
enough to keep the
feeling of forward
motion. Strong accents
and rhythmically precise
playing in the cello and
bass provide solid
support for the fast
moving violin and viola
passages. Measure 67
begins the slow, pastoral
setting of the
B-material. A gentle,
lyrical violin motive in
A major grows into a
high, sweeping melody
over sustained harmonies.
This provides a brief
repose before returning
to the fastoriginal tempo
and minor key as the
recapitulation begins at
m. 90. A modulation to B
minor (m. 94) lifts the
energy of the piece and
gives young players the
challenge of playing the
running lines in another

The poem describes the
poet being alone in a
garden. The moon and his
shadow became his
companions that night.
The choreographer brings
this idea to modern life
in an urban setting. She
created a series of
“mindscapesâ€
which are the result of
the exploration of the
different mental and
physical states of being
alone.Through
self-examination, the
choreographer raises the
question: are we ever
really alone? Our
physical being may be
standing by itself, but
what about our
introspective self? When
we are still, we let our
thoughts pass by like
flowing water. If we
could engage with our
shadows, what would it be

has commissioned a great
many composers since our
founding days in 1984.
Chen Yi is among ahandful
of our very favorites,
and one to whom
we’ve returned
time and time again. Her
music is powerful,
expansive,intimate, and
draws connections between
Eastern and Western,
ancient and modern
traditions in a voice all
her own.Chen Yi has
written or adapted four
works for the PRISM
Quartet. She penned a
wonderful miniature
called HappyBirth day to
PRISM to celebrate the
ensemble’s 20th
anniversary back in 2004
(Dedication, Innova
Recordings).We
subsequently commissioned
her to compose Septet
(2008) for Erhu, Pipa,
Percussion, and Saxophone
Quartet(2008), premiered
and recorded with the New
York ensemble Music From
China (Antiphony, Innova
Recordings 2010).In 2015,
the PRISM Quartet
performed and recorded
(XAS Records) a new
version of her saxophone
quartet concerto,BA YIN,
with the University of
Missouri-Kansas City Wind

the opening moments. The
piecesoon becomes more
dramatic, suggesting the
arrival of the
drinker’s
companions (real or
imagined) and his or
herincreasingly garrulous
outbursts. Passages of
consonance and discord
can easily be heard as
companionable singingand
bouts of drunken
argument. The piece
bustles along on a kind
of restless energy,
until, finally, that
restlessnesssubsides,
giving way to a gently
humorous ending where a
short falling phrase
signals the drinker
falling
asleep.â€.
