Originally a popular Baroque musical form, the chaconne is characterized by a set of ground-bass variations. In Kocsár's piece the 23-bar theme is followed by nine variations of diverse characters. The composition lasts about nine minutes and is rounded off with a recapitulation of the theme and a coda. The Chaconne can be performed by junior string orchestras consisting of either two violins and a cello or a violin, a viola, and a cello (with or without double bass), or by string trios consisting of two violins and violoncello or a violin, a viola and a cello. The edition includes a full score and one part for each instrument. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. Mozart ’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, K. 364 (320d), is his only complete surviving work in this genre. He wrote it in 1779 after returning from Paris and Mannheim. For two decades it was known only in a few copyists’ manuscripts. The first edition did not appear until 1802. The work achieved great popularity that same year, particularly the arrangements for Piano four-hands and Piano trio. This arrangement for String Sextet, dating from 1808, is interesting not only for its unusual scoring but also for the way the two concertante instrumentsinteract with the other strings. This edition revives this arrangement after almost two centuries, drawing primarily on the sole surviving source: the first edition in parts, published by the Vienna Stamperia Chimica in 1808. The editor, Christopher Hogwood, recounts the history of the work and the particulars of the arrangement in a trilingual preface (Eng . / Ger. / Cz . ) and a critical report.
