Mon deuxième quatuor à cordes, Crescent Scratches, s'inscrit dans la continuité du premier, Scratches, sans toutefois recourir au dispositif électronique qui, dans le premier quatuor, me permettait d'amplifier les timbres et de transformer le son en temps réel.Le terme de 'crescent scratch' provient des techniques de jeu développées par les DJ sur leurs platines vinyles ('scratch' ou 'scratching') que l'on retrouve dans le hip-hop et les musiques industrielles.Crescent Scratches est conçu à partir de deux principales idées : le glissando saturé (fréquemment pulsé), assimilable au 'scratch', provoqué par l'aller-retour du disque sur la platine, et la notion de boucle qui consiste à reproduire une même séquence, variée ou non. J'ai conçu des boucles et agi sur leur vitesse d'exécution, sur leur superposition en strates et leur traitement par caractéristiques de timbre. Cela finit par rendre quasiment imperceptible le retour des boucles - un phénomène qui m'a particulièrement intéressé dans cette composition. La boucle se meut en micro-élément, moteur d'une intense activité dans une macrostructure, cette macrostructure elle-même étant dès lors perçue comme une masse totalement saturée en évènements.La continuité entre ces deux quatuors se situe pour moi du côté du timbre et plus précisément dans la notation des différentes positions et pressions d'archet engendrant une large palette de sonorités saturées créant comme une aura autour du son des instruments. L'idée de 'scratch' comme onomatopée décrivant une rayure, une éraflure, une rupture ou une déchirure reste également au centre du propos de Crescent Scratches.Au-delà de l'électronique, l'endroit où se décèle la différence entre ces deux quatuors est dans la structuration de la forme et la gestion des événements. Crescent Scratches s'organise en un bloc d'une grande densité dans le traitement simultané des quatre instruments qui s'unissent là où, dans Scratches, j'articulais la forme en une succession de moments en solo, duo, trio et tutti.Yann Robin / Quatuor A Cordes

Par ADES THOMAS. Composed in 1994 and now firmly established as part of the contemporary string quartet repertoire, Arcadiana is one of Thomas Adès’s early masterpieces. Six of its seven movements evoke various vanished or vanishing idylls. The odd-numbered movements are all aquatic. I might be the ballad of some lugubrious gondolier; III takes a title and a figuration from a Schubert Lied; in V a ship is seen swirling away to L’Isle Joyeuse; VII is the River of Oblivion. Lotta Wennäkoski tells about her 10 minute long work Päärme (Hem) for piano trio: 'We often speak in music of crafting in a figurative sense, and craftsmanship is, for the composer particularly, a traditional professional virtue. I personally have from time to time nevertheless been interested in the concrete images aroused by handicrafts, the way fabrics feel, and sewing. The pi-ano trio Päärme/Hem has a pulsative character, especially in the outer sections, and the idea of steady but erratically colourful stitching prompted the amusing and highly unusual word I chose for the title of the piece. The hemming in this trio is cheerfully brisk, though the result is not al-ways even intended to be over-neat or regular. For noise sounds are also an intrinsic feature of a hand-made texture. As is often the case with me, my source of inspiration in composing was the fact that the Sibelius Piano Trio would be giving the first performance. The slow, melodic material of the static middle section is to a great extent indebted to the knowledge of just how succulently such delicate, inten-sive lines can sound in the hands of ace players.'
