In some ways I can subscribe to that concept, but for me when someone passes early, say in their fifth or sixth decade of life, it is 'before their time.” Composers often commemorate passings with music as a means to mourn and as well to celebrate the life of an individual who meant something to them. Such is the nature of this piece. Cette oeuvre fait partie d'un cycle de trois pièces (d'instrumentations différentes) fondé sur une série rythmique iranienne l'idée de cycle est née d'un projet commun avec le peintre italien Luigi Graneto (rencontré à Rome) qui désirait organiser une exposition où la musique serait partie intégrante de cette manifestation. Cinq périodes constituent un seul mouvement où les parties sont liées entre elles par le temps et l'idée. L'empreinte d'un rythme, l'embryon d'un champ harmonique forment les 'traces' de l'introduction. La souplesse et la matérialité du matériau sont testée dans la deuxième partie. Dans la troisième et quatrième partie, le matériau est travaillé sous forme de resserrements 'strettes', de superpositions 'strates'... A la dernière période, la série rythmique apparaît enfin sans ambages dans son intégralité. Deux points importants ont motivé le compositeur pour écrire cette pièce: la volonté d'intégrer un matériau traditionnel dans son propre langage (ici avec cette série rythmique à 5 temps empruntée au jeu du zarb iranien) et le souci de fondre le caractère spécifique de chaque instrument en une unité de timbre original et personnel.
