This work for
soprano, tenor and
baritone soloists, chorus
and orchestra was
commissioned by the
National Confederation of
Music Societies to
celebrate its Jubilee in
1985, with funds made
available by the Arts
Council of Great Britain.
The first performance was
given in London on 13th
April 1985 by the London
Symphony Chorus (chorus
master Simon Joly) and
the City of London
Sinfonia conducted by
Richard Hilcox. The title
of this work refers not
only to the use of the
words of St John the
Divine, but also to the
four poems that are set
alongside them. These
poems are all visionary
and revelatory and deal
either directly or by
suggestion with ideas of
St John. Vocal score with
piano reduction of the
orchestral parts.

The Blue
Rose Variations is one of
several works in which
the composer has drawn on
ragtime and blues. The
organ work is based on
two transformations of
the popular piano piece
To A Wild Rose (Woodland
Sketches, Op.51 No.1) by
the American composer,
Edward MacDowell
(1860-1908). During the
course of the Variations,
To A Wild Rose appears as
a blues and also as a
classical rag, often as
both together. The
sections are Theme: a
quiet blues; Variation I:
a pedal solo in varied
metres based on the blues
in fast tempo; Variation
II: the first appearance
of the rag as a
background to the blues
as a 2' pedal solo;
Variation III: a version
of Variation I now
involving manuals too;
Variation IV: another
blues solo against the
rag; Variation V: another
version of Variation I
with the pedal solo
almost entirely
transferred to the
manuals; Variation VI: a
final confrontation
between the blues and the
rag, now much decorated.
First performed in New
York in April 1986.
Duration c.15 mins.

Orchestral
study score. This work
was commissioned by the
Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra. It was first
performed on 23 April
1997, by Stewart McIlwham
and the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra,
conducted by the
composer. The three
movements should be
played without a break.
The piccolo may have
obvious limitations as a
solo instrument, but
Davies is not one to
shirk a challenge. What
he does is to play with
the stereotypical modes
of the instrument, so
that the military pipe
and drum effect is hinted
at near the beginning of
the third movement, while
the jaunty manner is
recalled at the close of
the first, but as through
a veil. A potentially
comic partnership with
the bass clarinet is also
dignified when the two
instruments engage in
meditative dialogue in
the second movement. Solo
part and piano reduction
on sale. Conductor's
score and orchestral
parts are available on
hire.
