Joachim
Raff's Fifth Symphony
Lenore op. 177, composed
in 1872, reveals the
composer as a
representative of the
middle ground between
Neo-German aesthetics and
the symphonic tradition.
It owes its name to G. A.
Burger's ballade, which
is the programmatic basis
of the final movement.
Using this literary
model, Raff oriented
himself to the Berlioz
program symphonies and
the Liszt symphonic-poem
concept, on the one hand,
but on the other, he let
the three preceding
movements follow
traditional symphonic
form. Raff conducted the
Lenore symphony's
premiere in December 1872
in a concert by the
Furstliche Hofkapelle in
Sondershausen. The
concert went to his
satisfaction, although
the audience evidently
did not know what to make
of the work: [...] and
the symphony [...] was
played before this
faintly musical party.
Essentially for the
greater glory of God and
my edification, less for
that of the said public,
which seems to have been
rather horrified by it.
His friend Hans von Bulow
had, however, a great
pleasure in hearing the
symphony the following
year in Berlin. In her
preface, the editor Iris
Eggenschwiler provides
detailed information
about the work's genesis,
documents Raff's ideas
and intentions, and
facilitates a
comprehensive orientation
within the historical
context. Breitkopf &
Hartel is now presenting
for the first time with
this symphony an
orchestral work by Raff
in a modern Urtext
edition, thus also
continuing its
collaboration with the
Joachim-Raff-Gesellschaft
.In collaboration with
the Joachim-Raff-Archiv

Rude
rs writes: There's a
solid tradition in the
history of Western music
of turning the theme of
Nicolo Paganini's 24th
Caprice for soloviolin
into a set of variations
endemic to the time and
style of each individual
composer; Liszt, Brahms,
Rachmaninov and
Lutoslawsky being the
most prominent names.
When asked by David
Starobin to write a
concerto for him, I
though well, why not have
a go at it? - bearing in
mind, that not only is
Paganini the most
celebrated violin-wizard
of all times, but he was
also a more than
accomplished guitarist.
There are 22 variations
in all, numbers 1 to 16
all adhering strictly to
the 16-bar pattern, laid
down by Paganini himself.
From variation 17 though,
the writing becomes more
symphonic and the rigid
16-bar regime is being
lossendes up a bit.
However, the last
variation 'Finale
Prestisimo' is a 6 x 16
bars white-knuckle ride,
in which the hitherto
soloistic role of the
guitar gives way to that
of 'primus interpares',
i.e. 'first among
equals'. As with another
set of variations of mine
'Concerto on Pieces'
(based on a tune by
Purcell), the nature and
shape of the
'Pagannini-Variations'
may be compared to a
stroll through a hall of
mirrors: the portrait -
the theme is gradually
being distorted out of
all recognition - but
it's still the same
original walking by.

Deter
mined to be seen as a
complete composer, Liszt
set out to create a
full-fledged opera, only
to later abandon the
project. 170 years later,
an examination of the
manuscript revealed a
virtually complete Act

form, and Sardanapalo
finally came to life.
This critical edition
includes a detailed study
on the genesis of Liszt's
Sardanapalo in English,
German, and Hungarian,
the libretto in the
original Italian as well
as in English, German,
and Hungarian
translation, several
facsimile pages of
Liszt's manuscript, and a

Bewaffnete (2 Tenore, 2

got off to a bad start,
to say the least: the
scandal provoked at the
first performance in
Weimar in 1858 led to
protests and ultimately
to the resignation of
Franz Liszt as court
opera director. It was
not until 1904 that the
opera was played again in
that city and proved that
the scandal had not been
caused by the work but by
Liszts aesthetic views.
The score was long
considered as the ideal
example of a musical
comedy with a far too
complicated plot. Today,
however, many prominent
commentators beg to
differ: This is one of
the sunniest scores ever
written. Music in the
spirit of Mozart and
Mendelssohn: a highly
delicate mixture of
classical formal rigor
and romantic irony,
heightened with just a
touch of exquisite
sensuality that has just
wafted in from the
Orient. It is practically
incomprehensible how
Cornelius could have been
regarded as a composer of
the Wagner school for
practically a century.
With its intricate fusing
of comedy, lyricism and
sentimentality, it is
precisely the opera that
Schubert, Schumann,
E.T.A. Hoffmann and
Mendelssohn were unable
to write. (Hans
Zender).

Hungaria
n Rhapsody N° 2 is
the second in a set of 19
Hungarian Rhapsodies by
composer Franz Liszt, and
is by far the most famous
of the set. Few other
piano solos have achieved
such widespread
popularity, offering the
pianist the opportunity
to reveal exceptional
skill as a virtuoso while
providing an immediate
and irresistible musical
appeal for the
listener.Both the
original piano solo form
and the orchestrated
version of this
composition have found
widespread use in
animated cartoons. Its
themes have also served
as the basis of several
popular songs.Composed in
1847 and dedicated to
Count László
Teleki, Hungarian
Rhapsody N° 2 was
first published as a
pianosolo in 1851. Its
immediate success and
popularity on the concert
stage soon led to an
orchestrated version,
arranged by the composer
in collaboration with
Franz Doppler. The
Japanese composer Tohru
Takahashi has made a
splendid transcription of
this great music for
clarinet choir. A
wonderful piece of music
for an advanced ensemble!
De Hongaarse
rapsodie nr. 2 is
verreweg de beroemdste
uit een set van negentien
Hongaarse rapsodieën
van de hand van componist
Franz Liszt. Er zijn maar
weinig andere werken voor
pianosolo die net zo
geliefd zijn. De pianist
krijgt in deze rapsodie
de mogelijkheid om zijn
of haar virtuositeit
tentoon te spreiden en
een directe,
onweerstaanbare muzikale
antrekkingskracht op de
luisteraar uit te
oefenen.Zowel de
originele pianosolo als
de georkestreerde versie
van deze compositie is
veel gebruikt in
tekenfilms. De themaâ??s
die erin voorkomen,
hebben ook gediend als
basis voor diverse
populaire songs.De tweede
Hongaarse rapsodie, die
werd gecomponeerd in 1847
en isopgedragen aan graaf
László Teleki, werd
in 1851 voor het eerst
uitgegeven als pianosolo,
door Senff en Ricordi.
Het onmiddellijke succes
en de populariteit op het
concertpodium leidden tot
een georkestreerde
versie, die de componist
zelf maakte, in
samenwerking met Franz
Doppler.De Japanse
componist Tohru Takahashi
heeft deze prachtige
muziek bewerkt tot een
uitstekende transcriptie
voor gevorderd
klarinetensemble.
