Er Huang
was commissioned by
Carnegie Hall, New York
where, in 2009, it
received its world
premiere with solo
pianist Lang Lang and the
Juilliard Orchestra under
the baton of Michael
Tilson Thomas. Chen wrote
about the work, 'Music
has its own life –
for me the germination of
any musical work is like
a tree growing out of the
ground, and the eventual
outcome of this life is
entirely unknowable in
advance.' Commenting on
the connection between Er
Huang and its source of
inspiration, the Er Huang
tunes from the classical
Peking Opera repertoire,
he says that, 'the way I
applied musical elements
from Peking Opera to my
own writing was not
really based on
musicological studies.
Rather, these tunes were
an essential part of my
childhood in Beijing, and
always intertwined with
memories of my family and
the society I lived in at
the time. Many people
from my generation would
be able to hum these
tunes by heart. These
days, however, these
familiar tunes have been
almost entirely
forgotten, as the younger
generation is much more
occupied by western pop
culture. This is why,
when I quote these tunes,
Ioften do so with a great
sense of nostalgia.
Traditional Chinese music
has a very strong
character, and the
organic assimilation of
something that I feel
most akin to, over time,
into my own musical
language, has become an
essential part of my
artistic
expression.'.

A
suite whose movements
always deliver something
other than what they seem
to promise. But
throughout, the two
instruments and
respectively their
players act like two
people in very specific
situations:
I.:
The opening movement is
reserved for the piano;
the initially earnest,
solitary cantilena
intensifies creating
expectation.
Suddenly II.: the
violin sounds. Its moving
figures replace the now
silent piano, also
soloistically. III.
„Passacaglia“
: The title is taken
literally – the
two instruments/persons
encounter each other in
the street. Two musical
characters who meet at a
specific point, recognize
each other, but move on
again, each one by
itself. IV.
„Rondo“: The
two of them dance
together. Before me, I
saw people dancing the
Sardana – a round
dance – in front
of the cathedral of
Barcelona. Four themes in
different time signatures
circle ceaselessly
between the two
instruments. V.
„Fuga“: At
last, regardless, panic
flight – again the
title is taken literally
... Human, only too human

The
Evolution of Solo Jazz
Piano is a study of solo
piano styles developed by
24 of the most
influential solo pianists
from 1900 to the present.
In order to clearly
illustrate the specific
contributions of the
various pianists, Bill
Dobbins composed a theme
based on the well-known
standard All of Me. By
applying the stylistic
approaches of the
different pianists to the
same theme, one becomes
aware of the subtle yet
evocative elements of
each individual style.
Common elements between
Waller, Ellington, Tatum,
Monk and Rowles, Tatum,
Hines and Wilson, Smith
and Ellington, Corea and
Beirach etc., should make
it clear that musical
individuality is largely
the result of the
subconscious emphasis of
some musical elements
over others, rather than
the self-conscious
cultivation of
originality for its own
sake. We sincerely hope
that this DVD may serve
as a stimulus toward the
further study of the solo
jazz piano tradition in
particular and for
creative music in
general.

'LIST
ENING EARTH' is a
symphonic drama, a one-
movement composition in
four parts based on the
work by two writers,
Joseph Addison
(1672-1719) and W.H.Auden
(1907-1973). Joseph
Addison is not
particularly well known;
he was English, a
classical scholar,
essayist, poet and
politician, but one of
his hymns was used by
Benjamin Britten. in his
setting of a Thomas
Tallis canon. The hymn
is singularly beautiful
and being a composer
always inspired by
extramusical stimuli such
as poems, nature,
paintings, I was
immediately convinced
when I carne across the
Addison hymn, that here
was exactly what I wanted
to use as my major source
of inspiration for this
piece, commissioned by
and written for The
Berlin Philharmonic.
I don't refer to the
hymn in its entirety, but
have chosen the following
3 excerpts, all acting as
mottos for the first
three sections of the
piece, thus turning the
piece into a
straightforward tonepoem
in the classical.
