Par WIDOR CHARLES-MARIE. The Suite Florentine for violin and piano written by Charles-Marie Widor in 1919, is an arrangement of the Suite for Violin and Piano, op. 76 (1903), itself a collection of stage music from La Sulamite (1903). It was first performed at the Élysée Palace on 20 February 1919 for Queen Hélène of Italy. Widor played the piano on that occasion and dedicated the work to the Queen. Like many of Widor's later works, it has no opus number. The suite highlights Widor's great talent for adopting the harmonic languages of various stylistic periods and his harmony is very eclectic. 5 Selected Songs. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The only known chamber music by Gustav Mahler is a movement for piano quartet from his student days at the Conservatorium in Vienna (1875-1878). The present new arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil go some way to addressing this gap while they also enrich the repertoire with pieces that are very interesting and demanding in their own right. The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. This book includes a selection of pieces that best suit the sound of the flute while providing plenty of variety. The arrangements transform Mahler's songs from their original conception for voice and piano or orchestral accompaniment into a purely instrumental dialogue between two equally important instrumentalists. In most cases the colourful orchestral versions provide the starting point. The omission of the text also demands different compositional techniques to bring out the various effects between indulgent sweetness and grotesque irony. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, pot pourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his ‘easily playable’ compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties.
