Fragments K. 442. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart often began work on a composition only to put it aside, unfinished. Some of these fragments contain wonderful music, as is proved by these three Piano trio fragments. Mozart composed them at different times as individual movements, though the posthumous first edition brought them together as a supposedly new and unknown Piano trio by the composer, and on this basis they were given the number “442” in Köchel’s catalogue. The first edition used completions by Mozart ’s friend Abbé Maximilian Stadler that were stylistically correct but possessed little originality. Beethoven’s treatment of the trio is pioneering: he does not apply a typical piano trio setting in contrast to the orchestra, but varies his treatment of the solo parts, allowing each instrument to play alone with the orchestra (particularly the cello), using two solo instruments together in ever new combinations, and finally bringing together all three instruments with the orchestra. Beethoven weaves a complex web – the orchestral, piano, violin and cello voices interplaying and entwining – and he produces a true masterpiece. Bärenreiter’s new Urtext edition of Beethoven’sTriple Concerto is a completely fresh revision of this warm and beautiful showpiece. Score = Piano Part. Par THEODORAKIS MIKIS. Theodorakis composed the 'Trio for violin, violoncello and piano' in Athens during 1946-47. He had just completed his studies in composition at the Athens Conservatory and was preparing himself for his Diploma. However, he was overtaken by the Civil War. Thus, one part of the Trio was written in circumstances of persecution (underground) and another in exile (in the island of Ikaria). It is a work in which - as in the remaining works of that period - the influence of his classical music studies become apparent.
