César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaye.After Franck's death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata, the Parisian house Julien Hamelle, announced an arrangement of the work for viola, but it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. The present arrangement for viola is largely based on Jules Delsart's arrangement for piano and cello, the only version of the Sonata which the composer authorized. However, the viola part here also adopts extensive passages in their original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in those passages where the cello lies two octaves beneath the violin. Being set in the alto register, the part thus lies between the other two string versions, lending the Sonata a delightful hybrid hue beyond the brilliance of the violin and the sonorousness of the cello. The piano part has been left intact and is thus identical to that of the original version. / Alto Et Piano

Par BERIO LUCIANO. This set of arrangements of Luciano Berio’s “Duetti”, originally for two violins, represents a fascinating expansion of the limited repertoire for two violas. Berio originally conceived these duets as a collection of occasional pieces, each dedicated to someone who was close to him, rather like Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, but they eventually developed into a full compositional project with pedagogical overtones. As such, there is a wide variation in technical demands, from pieces playable by beginners up to a duet that foreshadows the skills required for Berio’s “Sequenza” for the viola. Taken as a whole, over some years of study, the “Duetti” can gently lead players into the mysteries of contemporary music; however, the composer also envisaged them in a concert performance of the complete cycle with at least 24 players of differing abilities taking turns to play. In this guise, it might be an intriguing idea to mix them with the original version for two violins (UE17757), although it must be understood that the two versions are not mutually compatible to be played as violin/viola duets./ Répertoire / 2 Altos

A special piece - a special story: In 2020, a renowned architect approached a composer to create a new piece of music for his daughter's wedding, which the happy father could give to the young couple as a wedding present. In earlier eras of private patronage, such a story would have been natural, but in the 21st century it is an odd story. The composition subtly alludes to the occasion: against the background of the piano, a duet of two instruments tells the story of a serene love (the piece can either be performed with a bassoon and a violoncello, or with two violoncellos). Par PLEYEL IGNAZ. The Quintet in G minor belongs to the first group of three quintets written by Ignaz Pleyel in 1785 and published for the first time in 1786. Of all his quintets, it was the most frequently published one and was available in various editions even during Pleyel's lifetime. The modern character of this piece shows in the 'new kind' of compositional technique and elaboration of the themes, as presented by Joseph Haydn for the first time in 1781 in his String Quartets Op. 33. As with Haydn, the modern compositional style shows in the thematic work of the development which is mainly derived from the main theme. He studied composition with Robert HP Platz in Maastricht from 1997-2003, graduating with distinction, followed by a further degree in composition and electronic music with Karlheinz Essl at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz. He has received scholarships and invitations from institutions including the Electronic Studio at the University of Liège, the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, IRCAM Paris and the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Culture, an Artist’s Scholarship from Lower Saxony for the Künstlerhof Schreyahn and otherhonours: the Supportive Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2005, a scholarship from the Wilfried Steinbrenner Foundation in 2006 and a German Government Scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2007, Scholarship awarded by the German Minister of Culture for a one-year stay at the German Academy Rome, Villa Massimo (2010). On a trouvé dans les papiers de Stéphane Mallarmé, après sa mort, une enveloppe de carton rouge contenant 210 feuillets de petit format (12,5 x 7,5) couverts d'une écriture au crayon, très légère, rapide et presque effacée aujourd'hui. Au verso du feuillet 6, sensiblement plus petit que les autres, on lit, difficilement, trois mots qu'on aura mis plus de trente ans à déchiffrer: fureur contre informe. Cette oeuvre inachevée, à la fois produite et empêchée par la douleur, a été écrite après la mort d'Anatole Mallarmé (16 juillet 1871 - 8 octobre 1879), le fils du poète. C'est un tombeau, une consolation poétique, brûlante, laconique, exempte de toute préciosité. L'oeuvre aura été comme asphyxiée par la charge autobiographique, par un JE pathétique et véhément qui lacère la matière poétique et finalement condamne l'essai de résurrection. Le trio à cordes reprend, en treize fragments enchaînés, les trois ordres, les trois temps non chronologiques imaginés par Mallarmé pour ce théâtre abstrait à trois personnages (père, mère, fils). I. Moment de la révolte et du cri, déclenchement de la maladie, mort qui frappe / tempo rapide, refrain, stridences fugitives II. Temps de la maladie, moment de la mort du fils, de l'ensevelissement (assomption paternelle) / silence coloré III. Résolution, projet poétique, essai de triomphe spirituel / cantilène, chant funèbre L'impossible à écrire est au centre du projet mallarméen, où le fragment, l'esquisse deviennent moments d'un acte poétique fondé en l'inachèvement. Le suspendu, l'inaffirmé sont souvent évoqués par Mallarmé dans ces feuillets comme la registration d'une musique intérieure qu'on ne peut faire entendre à quiconque - 'Manquer le but sublime' (f 105). Le projet est laissé en sa nudité. La brisure, le non-résolu révèlent alors à Mallarmé que l'actualité de la pensée, le noyau irréductible de la tentative poétique, ce qui est absolument moderne, est néant de chagrin, veille, rien d'affirmé donné à entendre.
