Vieuxtemps is nowadays considered to be the foremost exponent of the Franco-Belgian violin school. Par POHJOLA SEPPO. According to Jouni Kaipainen, the fourth string quartet (2006) is one of key works of Seppo Pohjola (b. 1965) and holds a place as a landmark in Finnish quartet literature. Of the composer's five string quartets, it is the longest and has the widest thematic arcs of his quartets. Seppo Pohjola has gone through a variety of styles in his musical career. He began as a strict Modernist, progressed towards Expressionism and took on board Romantic influences before ending up in the early 2000s in (a reformed brand of) Modernism again. Osmo Tapio RĂ€ihĂ€lĂ€ describes the end result thus: “The ‘new' Pohjola often anchors his style in a frenetic pulse through which he builds musical processes.” Duration c. 33 minutes. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association for a world premiere by the LA Phil New Music Group in January 2019, Tyshawn Sorey's gently tolling chamber work For Fred Lerdahl is dedicated to the elder composer on the occasion of Lerdahl's retirement. Sorey credits Lerdahl as one of two teachers who helped him to find his own voice as a composer. A single, 13-minute movement, it features a highly lyrical, muted viola solo over gentle, softly rhythmic dissonances from the two vibraphones and piano. Par CAFARO PASQUALE. Pasquale Cafaro, born in S. Pietro in Galantina in 1715; he was directed by his family to 'scientific' studies (science of law) but soon abandoned them for musical ones. He then entered the Conservatorio della PietĂ  de' Turchini as a son at the age of 18, almost as an adult. His main teacher was one of the greatest musicians of the 18th century, Leonardo Leo, who immediately recognized the young man's talent.
