Par STRAUSS RICHARD. La très romantique sérénade pour instruments à vent en un mouvement op. 7 a été composée par un Richard Strauss alors tout juste âgé de 18 ans. Cette œuvre aujourd’hui encore extrêmement appréciée des instrumentistes à vent rappelle, dans son effectif comme dans sa structure, la «Gran Partita» de Mozart, que Strauss prit certainement en exemple. La Sérénade ne fut pas exécutée dans sa patrie bavaroise, mais créée à Dresde en 1882 sous la direction de Franz Wüllner, chef d’orchestre alors très estimé qui avait également tenu Rheingold (L’Or du Rhin) et la Walküre (La Walkyrie) de Richard Wagner sur les fonts baptismaux, puis, plus tard, avait créé les poèmes symphoniques de Strauss Till Eulenspiegel (Till l’Espiègle) et Don Quixote (Don Quichotte). Un grand honneur donc pour le jeune Bavarois! The famous Golliwogg’s Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children’s Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. He had been there as Franz Liszt?s assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city?s art scene now he embarked on new paths. He already composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff?s intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner?s music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress ?in an inherently historical way? and ?toground the individual substance in existing forms,? as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77.
