Allerheiligentag Iii. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. Jyrki Linjama's second string quartet (2018) is subtitled Allerheiligentag III. The material for the Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba and violin.The composer tells: “The choice of topic and material for the string trio was originally prompted by the venue at which it was to be premiered: the old church on the island of Seili (Själö). The bleak history of the island's leper and mental hospital evoked images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the harsh and beautiful melody that it began to generate a whole cycle.” The string quartet is in three movements (slow-quick-slow) tensed in different ways by contrasts. The first movement has both swinging softness and cutting sharpness, the Scherzo the wildness of a dance of death and lyricism, and the finale the irrevocability of a funeral march and tender melodiousness./ Répertoire / String Quartet

Arrangeur: Robert Rainford. Par BRUCH MAZ. 7 short, melodic pieces with chances for both soloists to shine. Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German Romantic composer, conductor and teacher. A child prodigy, he composed his first pieces at the age of nine, and went on to hold musical posts in Mannheim, Berlin and Bonn. He also spent three seasons as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. In his lifetime he was known mostly as a choral composer, but it is for his first violin concerto that he is chiefly remembered now. These dances were first published in 1892 for violin and piano, although Bruch later arranged them for solo piano, and also for orchestra. The slow, stately introduction leads in to seven dances in volume one, each a charming character study. Individual movements aredramatic, then tranquil: dance-like then reflective. The third, fifth and seventh movements have the feeling of folk-dances, while the others are more lyrical and expressive. Structurally the pieces are fairly simple, with melody sections flowing in to each other. Some ideas are developed into links and codas. In this arrangement, both solo players share the melodic material fairly evenly. Each has a solo movement to play, with the other movements featuring call and answer moments, harmony sections and contrapuntal elements to enjoy. Par DAVIES PETER MAXWELL. Peter Maxwell Davies spent a day at a gynaecological clinic in London at the invitation of Professor Ian Craft, who commissioned the piece in memory of his father. During his time there he met many people and shared in some of the deep emotions they experienced. Artemis Locheia is the Greek Godess of Fertility. In this one movement, 25 minute work, the joy and exuberance experienced by couples when pregnancy is confirmed is captured. There are many tempo changes and two extended cadenzas for the clarinet. Par SIBELIUS JEAN. The Suite is a student exercise, first performed 13. 4. 1889 at a musical soirée at the Helsinki Music Institute. Ferruccio Busoni, who was teacher of piano at the Institute at the time, described the first performance as follows: “We sharpened our concentration as we realised that we were about to hear something quite beyond the usual standard for student works…”. In the A major suite, colour comes to the fore for the first time as a major element in Sibelius’s music. The emphasis on sonic texture is joined – somewhat unusually for such an early work – by a fairly bold handling of rhythm and harmony. Unfortunately only the first three movements of the suite have survived in tact. Nicolò Paganini?s Minuetto e Trio in F sharp major for violin and viola - the autograph manuscript of which is preserved in the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome - is, together with his Sonata a violino e viola (M.S. 108), one of the rare pieces the Genoese composer wrote for this particular ensemble. Like the Quartettsatz of 1914 (ED 7816), Quartettsatz in c-Moll of 1921, premièred by the Henschel Quartet at the Orff Centre in Munich in 2007, testifies to Orff’s early struggles towards the classical-Romantic tradition. Originally left unfinished as a fragment in C sharp minor, the first version has now been reconstructed (in C minor) from a source that only survived as a copy with autograph corrections. It is interesting to see a new tonal language appearing quite suddenly (and notated without bar lines in the first version) in the coda./ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Par SCHWEITZER BENJAMIN. The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of „twilight“: air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this „motto-like“ opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, ‚arcane‘ bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the „elastic“ character of the middle section. Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces for Viola and Piano Posterity has retained of Nadia Boulanger only her gifts as a virtuoso of the piano and organ, her skill as a conductor (of vocal ensemble and orchestra) and most of all, her incredible charisma as a teacher. For nearly sixty years, 'Mademoiselle' made the most of her famous Wednesdays, bringing rigour and passion to the training of several generations of musicians: among so many others, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Markevitch, Michel Legrand, Witold Lutoslawski, Astor Piazzolla, Quincy Jones and John-Eliot Gardiner have all kept unforgettable memories of these times. Was Nadia Boulanger wrong to let teaching music take precedence over her composing, as Gabriel Fauré, the great master she venerated, believed? The publication of Three Pieces for Viola and Piano, raises the question. This transcription of Three Pieces for cello and piano was composed between 1911 and 1913 and published by Heugel. The two initial pieces were originally written for organ: the first, in E flat minor, brings a moderate tempo to a melancholy cantilena with Romantic accents, while the second, in A minor, exudes warmth and tenderness. The third piece (C sharp minor), most likely originally titled Danse espagnole, heralds the Roaring Twenties with its restlessness and festive crackle. Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well.
