origin in Southern Italy,
in Calabria, where an
Albanian community has
lived for more than 500
years, and so has the
song! The tenderness of
the melodic lines
expresses the natural
beauty of the distant
homeland, which according
to legend can be seen
from the Calabrian
mountain-tops. As in most
folk songs, this tune is
remarkably short; the
melody itself has not
been altered, but has
been extended, enriched
in texture and presented
in different ways. The
melodic lines serve as a
point of departure for
the proliferation of a
distinct harmonic

of this melancholy piece
we find echoes of
Albinoni’s
Adagio which -
according to the latest
research was actually
composed by his
biographer Remo Giazotto.
Thanks to the four-part
variable instrumentation
(with ad lib. drums) this
funeral march can be
played by pretty much any
ensemble - whether at a
funeral on the way from
the church to the
cemetery, in the church
itself or indeed on stage
as part of a memorial
concert.

This
cantata, from an
important manuscript in
Berlin containing 18
Albinoni cantatas for
soprano and continuo,
takes the form of a
lover's plea to Clori,
who is proving 'hard to
get'. He begs her finally
to yield to his love.
Even if she does not
reciprocate it, she
should at least soothe
his pain temporarily by
glancing in his
direction. As so often in
Baroque cantatas, the
exaggerated emotion seems
to be ironised to some
extent: Albinoni and his
poet simultaneously
express and critically
observe the lover's
feelings. The two arias
are nicely contrasted,
the first containing a
large amount of written
in vocal ornamentation
and the second, in
contrast, conveying a
bluff breeziness.

the fact that Tomaso
Albinoni appears to have
enjoyed a large following
among his contemporaries,
few details of his life
are known. This work
begins with an Allegro,
typical of the model
established in Albinoni's
late period. It maintains
the typical three
movement form,
fast-slow-fast.
Accompanying the trumpet
in the original version
is a small wind ensemble
with continuo consisting
of three oboes, bassoon
and continuo... This
offers a modern
performance edition of an
important piece from one
of the great composers of
the Baroque period..
