The
character Matilda, after
debuting with humble
beginnings in Roald
Dahl's 1988 children's
novel, has seen an audio
adaptation, a feature
film, a radio program, a
West End/Broadway
musical, and finally a
film adaptation of the
aforementioned musical.
The movie dropped on
Netflix in 2022 and
featured a brand new song
from the original
composer Tim Minchin.
This fantastic new
closing song starts small
and builds into an
enormous and positively
extraordinarily cathartic
explosion of choral
voices!

Georg Kreisler
equals scathing, dark
black humour on the
piano! The Singphoniker
have arranged Georg
Kreisler's best known
songs for all-male
ensemble and recorded
them on CD. Schott now
publishesthe
corresponding music
edition for men's choir
TTBB with piano
accompaniment (Georg
Kreisler - Lieder und
Chansons, ED 22735). In
addition, all songs from
the sheet music album are
available in separate
editions: Tauben
vergiften im Park puts
the relationship between
dove and man in a
nutshell and suggests a
funnily described, yet
ethically not correct
method of taking action
against the pigeon
terror. This pleasant
arrangement with
Kreisler's humorous text
most certainly creates an
exuberant atmosphere in
the concert.

For faithful
Catholics it is the great
mystery, and for those
who are not Christian
believers it is
incomprehensible,
possibly even off-putting
- the mystery of the
Eucharist. As far back as
the late medieval period,
the verse prayer Ave
verum inimitably captures
the special atmosphere of
the contradiction between
a terrible death and the
redemption of mankind.
Matsushita sets an early
version of this prayer
for the Eucharist in
motet-like ABA form. A
floating melody,
alternating precisely
between major and minor
and first sung solo by
all four voices in
transposition, introduces
the piece in a
contemplative style. The
scale is then altered in
the counterpoint to a
pure Dorian mode,
contrasting in the middle
section at the text vere
passum, where Matsushita
accompanies the
increasingly wide-ranging
melody and its chromatic,
augmented intervals, by
increasingly dissonant
chordal shifts like a
fauxbourdon. From this
the tonal high point
develops into an almost
perfect F major, which
then finally picks up on
the opening motif for the
added lines of text O
Jesu dulcis, o Jesu
pie... before ebbing away
in F major. Voice range:
S: des' - fis'' / A:gdeg
- d'' / T: cdeg - as' /
B: F - c'.

Following a
stately introduction that
reflects the massive
grandeur of medieval
cathedrals, the orchestra
takes off with an
energetic original theme
that culminates with the
inspiring classic hymn,
“Praise to the
Lord.†The
substantial use of
multiple meters keeps
everyone alert, including
the conductor. Optional
notes are provided for
less experienced
ensembles to make this
playable in first
position (except basses).
Technically conservative
enough for 3rd year
groups, musically and
rhythmically interesting
enough to hold the
attention of advanced
players. This flexible
piece will work for
concert, contest, and
sacred settings.
