This well-known
reggae song was a great
hit for the Jamaican
group Bob Marley and The
Wailers in the live
version of 1975. It was
written by Bob Marley
himself, but he had it
attributed to a man
called Vincent Ford, a
friend of his - who could
keep running his soup
kitchen in Trenchtown
with the royalties. No
Woman, No Cry is still a
classic within pop music.
This arrangement for a
variable four-part
line-up was written by
Peter Kleine Schaars, who
has produced many more
successful arrangements
of popular
hits.

In 1990,
Ewazen wrote his Three
Lyrics of Edna St.
Vincent Millay for
soprano Jody Dall'Armi
with piano accompaniment.
About ten years later,
Ewazen created a version
for trumpet and piano,
and also for trumpet and
marimba. Answering a
commission by Cantabile
Chamber Chorale in
celebration of their 20th
anniversary season,
Ewazen set the first
poem, God's World, for
mixed chorus and piano.
The text celebrates the
wonder and beauty of our
world, but with an
understanding of the
fleeting temporal passing
inherent in each view.
Ewazen's lush melodic
lines are crafted to
match.

“Hey
brother! There's an
endless road to
rediscover Hey sister!
Know the water's sweet
but blood is thicker
…â€
â
œIf the sky comes
falling down, for you /
There’s nothing in
this world I
wouldn’t
doâ€. The subject of
this energetic,
life-affirming hit is
being there for one
another. Whether sung by
female or mixed choirs,
the fanfare-like theme is
equally powerful and will
keep the audience tapping
their
feet.
The
editor:
Hans
Vainikainen (b. 1976)
hails from a new
generation of conductors
in the Swedish choral
tradition. His conducting
repertoire covers a wide
range of genres and eras,
from Mahler’s
Eighth Symphony to the
Swedish DJ Avicii. In
2005 he won the Swedish
Conductors’ Prize,
and two years later he
was appointed artistic
director of the Katarina
kyrka, the home of
Katarinakörerna, one
of Sweden’s
largest choral
societies.
Hans
Vainikainen heads
Stockholm’s
Katarinakörerna with
more than 500 singers in
various combinations.
Their programmes cover
both sacred and secular
music. In his search for
suitable arrangements,
his eye fell on one the
world’s best-known
pop artists, Tim
Bergling, known
professionally as Avicii.
He then arranged three of
Avicii’s best
songs for classical
choirs, intending them to
be encore
pieces.
“Hey
Brotherâ€,
“Levels†and
“Without youâ€
are now available for
six-part mixed or female
choir. The arrangements
offer a wide variety of
vocal and choral
possibilities and
attention has been paid
that all parts are of the
same musical standard.
Whether homophonic or
unisono, they artfully
intertwine from one
passage to the next.
However, for all their
sophistication the
arrangements remain
manageable and easy to
learn, displaying the
typical groove of each
Avicii song within a
multi-layered
texture.

Paul Marie
Theodore Vincent d'Indy
was born in Paris into an
aristocratic family of
royalist and Catholic
persuasion. He had piano
lessons from an early age
from his paternal
grandmother, who passed
him on to Antoine
Francois Marmontel and
Louis Diemer. His main
influence was Cesar
Franck.
These three
pieces were some of his
many works for
Piano.Opus 33 was
inspired by a trip to
Bayreuth, the musical
home of Wagner and the
Black Forest region.
Opus 33 no. 1 from 1889
is titled ? with no
explanation of itself.
Opus 33 no. 10 is titled
Lermoos, which is a
delightful skiing village
in Austria right on the
border with Germany.
Germany's largest
mountain is in perfect
view, possibly giving the
movement its spirit.
Opus 28 is a Serenade for
Violin and Piano
published in 1900. It is
lithe, subtle and
lyrical.
