Arrangeur: Robert Rainford. Par BRUCH MAZ. 7 short, melodic pieces with chances for both soloists to shine. Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German Romantic composer, conductor and teacher. A child prodigy, he composed his first pieces at the age of nine, and went on to hold musical posts in Mannheim, Berlin and Bonn. He also spent three seasons as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. In his lifetime he was known mostly as a choral composer, but it is for his first violin concerto that he is chiefly remembered now. These dances were first published in 1892 for violin and piano, although Bruch later arranged them for solo piano, and also for orchestra. The slow, stately introduction leads in to seven dances in volume one, each a charming character study. Individual movements aredramatic, then tranquil: dance-like then reflective. The third, fifth and seventh movements have the feeling of folk-dances, while the others are more lyrical and expressive. Structurally the pieces are fairly simple, with melody sections flowing in to each other. Some ideas are developed into links and codas. In this arrangement, both solo players share the melodic material fairly evenly. Each has a solo movement to play, with the other movements featuring call and answer moments, harmony sections and contrapuntal elements to enjoy. The two nocturnes were composed immediately after major surgery, against a deadline, and, despite the music sounding unlike anything I have written before, I decided to keep them exactly as they turned out. 2010 is a Chopin year, and I made this pair of nocturnes into a little tribute, after playing through and listening to most of his output. Never before had I composed under these drugged conditions – the musical dimensions were enormously exaggerated, with each interval and each phrase being elongated out of all proportion, and the whole few minutes filling the whole of time and space. The orchestration, for piano quartet, was influenced by the very neo-classical feel of the chamber version of the concertos, and the harmonic language very much the result of pondering Chopin’s very individual take on J.S Bach. Der Komposition von absences [« fragmenté »] gingen verschiedene Überlegungen voraus: zum einen das Projekt „approches: « H II » linéaires“ über einen Text von Anne-Marie Albiach, woraus das noch unentwickelte Grundmaterial entnommen wurde, zumanderen die Suche nach einem Fragmentkonzept, das – entgegen meiner früheren Auffassung von willkürlicher Aufsplitterung in „kleine“ Einheiten – das Fragment in einen komplexen klanglichen und harmonischen Zusammenhang bringt. In absences [«fragmenté »] spielen die Zahlen 1 bis 6 eine zentrale Rolle [Mallarmé/Albiach], sowohl in der Fragmentierung des musikalischen Textes als auch in sämtlichen anderen Parametern [die Großform – initiale / Teil I / intercalaire / Teil II – scheint demzu widersprechen; das Quartett ist jedoch Teil eines größeren Werks für 3 Instrumentalgruppen mit der Form initiale / Teil I / intercalaire / Teil II / intercalaire / Teil III / épilogue; das Fehlen des Kontextes wird mit dem ersten Teil des Titelsangedeutet]. Der musikalische Text wird als erstes in „Großfragmente“ zerlegt. Diese sind je definiert durch: - 6 Zentralakkorde von unterschiedlicher Dichte - 6 Rahmenintervalle [zur Steuerung des Tonhöhenumfangs] - sich kontinuierlich verkürzendeGesamtdauer - perspektivische Auffächerung der Klangfarben [d. h. Spielarten: am Steg, mit Dämpfer, normal, Pizzicato, Flageolettgriff, auf dem Griffbrett] Durch die allmähliche Schrumpfung der Großfragmente nimmt der Raum dazwischen immer mehr Zeitein. Er wird mit raren, ruhigen Geräuschaktionen von jeweils drei Spielern frei gestaltet. Die Großfragmente werden ihrerseits in „Kleinfragmente“ aufgeteilt, die Träger des gesamten musikalischen Materials werden. Sie sind je definiert durch: - 1Zentralton, dessen Tonhöhe indirekt proportional zur Länge des Fragments berechnet wird. Referenz ist Grundton und Obertöne eines tiefen balinesischen Gongs: F = 87 Hz - 1 Teilakkord [Teil des Zentralakkords des übergeordneten Großfragments], wobeidie Tonhöhen an das Spektrum des tiefen Gongs angeglichen werden - die innerhalb des Teilakkords existierenden Differenztöne ersten Grades - die innerhalb des Teilakkords existierenden Summationstöne ersten Grades - Modulation des Teilakkords durchden Zentralton - Klangfarbenvariationen [Spielweisen] zweiten Grades In den Räumen zwischen den Kleinfragmenten erklingt jeweils der Zentralton des gerade verklungenen Fragments, dessen Spielweise organisch in die Hauptspielweise des nächstenFragments übergeleitet wird, und zwar von dem Instrument, das als nächstes aus dem Quartett heraustritt.
