by the Arbeitskreis fur
Musik in der Jugend for
the project
KomponistInnen schreiben
fur Kinder und
Jugendchore. Thus the use
of flute and cello in
this work for women's
choir is intended to
assist intonation.
According to Hiller the
two instruments may also
represent the aulos and
lyre, the instruments
which in classical
antiquity accompanied the
declamation of poems. He
writes about the ancient
Greek poetess: With her
verses Sappho, who lived
on the Aegean island of
Lesbos, has for thousands
of years inspired poets,
visual artists and
composers to create new
works of art. In our
time, for example,
Aribert Reimann, Wilhelm
Killmayer, Iannis Xenakis
and Carl Orff have
composed monuments in
sound to her. The
fragments of her verses
which survive give rise
to speculation about what
is missing, to new
interpretations, and to
the idea of filling the
gaps with music. What
also fascinates me in
Sappho's texts are the
glowing eroticism, their
iridescent glitter, and
their constant high
tension. These poems must
be sung, especially by
women, to whom Sappho
dedicated most of these
beautiful lines.

A relaxed, contrapuntal
four-part chorale
movement with the first
and last verses of the
Lutheran hymn forms the
framework, and the other
movements are the same as
in the later new version.
This simpler cantata is
also entirely suitable
for celebrating
Reformation Day, as Bach

Inspiration
was commissioned by the
Solothurnischer Kanotonal
Musikverband in
Switzerland in 1993. The
composition begins with
an A-theme written in a
Phrygian tonality and,
after an enormous climax,
moves on into a quicker
B-section, characterized
by the use of wide
interval jumps. Then
follows the development
in which both themes
return individually and
together. Peace and quiet
is restored in the slow
middle movement, based on
the B-theme. The movement
comes to a close with a
tutti B-theme, brutally
interrupted by fragments
from the A-theme. Without
a break, the final
movement of this
contrastive piece
develops from these
fragments. The theme of
this extremelyrhythmical
closing movement is built
up of elements from the
A-theme, whilst the
B-theme (from the slow
middle movement) returns
in full once more. Before
the piece comes to a
close in a resounding
fortissimo, the cornet
soloist performs the
A-theme from the back of
the auditorium, to
special effect.

2019 is a
three-movement suite
based on a local folksong
and was commissioned by
Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem,
from the Dutch province
of Friesland, on the
occasion of its 100th
anniversary in 2019.
‘Awakening
Village’, the
first movement, musically
describes the waking up
and coming to life of the
village. ‘Bintje
Monument’ was
inspired by a famous
sculpture that was placed
to honour headmaster
Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries
(1854-1929) who developed
the well-known potato
variety called
‘bintje’.
The finale,
‘Journey into the
Unknown’ refers to
the band’s
memorable 2011 concert
trip to the United States
of America, in which the
composer combines
elements of thefolksong
and fragments from
‘The Star-Spangled
Banner’. The piece
consists of a wide range
of playful and melodic
sequences as well as some
galvanizing rhythmical
passages.

Centenary 2019
werd gecomponeerd in
opdracht van Chr. Fanfare
De Lofstem uit het Friese
Sumar ter gelegenheid van
het honderdjarig jubileum
van de vereniging in
2019. Het is gebaseerd op
een plaatselijk
volksliedje. In het
eerste deel,
‘Awakening
Village’, wordt
verklankt hoe het dorp
ontwaakt en tot leven
komt. Deel twee,

Monument’, is ge
nspireerd op een

At the end of
1944, Allied troops
invaded the Netherlands
from Belgium. Hope and
longing for freedom,
which now seemed so
close, swept through the
Netherlands: Operation
Market Garden was
launched. Huge numbers of
paratroopers made the
dangerous jump to take
over enemy territory on
the south side of the
Rhine. Fierce fighting
and attempts to cross and
secure the river resulted
in heavy casualties for
the liberating forces.
Ground support from the
south came too late and
there was no alternative
but to call off Operation
Market Garden. What
looked like a quick
liberation of the
Netherlands turned into a
long, bitter struggle. To
make matters worse, a
harsh winter followed:
hunger and cold ate away
at hope and the prospect
of a liberated
Netherlands. The
composition 1944 uses
original radio fragments
from 1944 to describe
these
events.

2019 is a
three-movement suite
based on a local folksong
and was commissioned by
Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem,
from the Dutch province
of Friesland, on the
occasion of its 100th
anniversary in 2019.
‘Awakening
Village’, the
first movement, musically
describes the waking up
and coming to life of the
village. ‘Bintje
Monument’ was
inspired by a famous
sculpture that was placed
to honour headmaster
Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries
(1854-1929) who developed
the well-known potato
variety called
‘bintje’.
The finale,
‘Journey into the
Unknown’ refers to
the band’s
memorable 2011 concert
trip to the United States
of America, in which the
composer combines
elements of thefolksong
and fragments from
‘The Star-Spangled
Banner’. The piece
consists of a wide range
of playful and melodic
sequences as well as some
galvanizing rhythmical
passages.

Inspiration
was commissioned by the
Solothurnischer Kanotonal
Musikverband in
Switzerland in 1993. The
composition begins with
an A-theme written in a
Phrygian tonality and,
after an enormous climax,
moves on into a quicker
B-section, characterized
by the use of wide
interval jumps. Then
follows the development
in which both themes
return individually and
together. Peace and quiet
is restored in the slow
middle movement, based on
the B-theme. The movement
comes to a close with a
tutti B-theme, brutally
interrupted by fragments
from the A-theme. Without
a break, the final
movement of this
contrastive piece
develops from these
fragments. The theme of
this extremelyrhythmical
closing movement is built
up of elements from the
A-theme, whilst the
B-theme (from the slow
middle movement) returns
in full once more. Before
the piece comes to a
close in a resounding
fortissimo, the cornet
soloist performs the
A-theme from the back of
the auditorium, to
special effect.
