This collection
of character pieces by
Swedish, Finnish,
Norwegian and Danish
composers is a good
illustration of the fact
that there is plenty to
discover in those areas
of Europe that more
rarely enjoy the
limelight. The composers
featured in this volume
were all famous in their
day, and not only
participated in European
musical life but also
helped to shape it: the
Norwegian Agathe
Backer-Grondahl, for
example, was a pupil of
Ferenc Liszt and Hans von
Bülow, the Swede
Ludvig Norman was also an
outstanding concert
pianist, and Niels
Wilhelm Gade was the most
important Danish romantic
composer, conductor of
the Leipzig Gewandhaus
Orchestra and a friend of
Mendelssohn andSchumann.
Die Sammlung an
Charakterstücken von
schwedischen, finnischen,
norwegischen und
dänischen Komponisten
zeigt auch gut, dass man
sehr wohl in den Gebieten
Europas vieles entdecken
kann, die weniger in
Rampenlicht stehen. Die
Meister des Bandes waren
zu ihrer Zeit nicht nur
berühmte Komponisten
und am europäischen
Musiklebens beteiligt,
sie beeinflussten es
auch. Beispielsweise war
die Norwegerin Agathe
Backer-Grondahl eine
Schülerin von Franz
Liszt und Hans von
Bülow, der Schwede
Ludvig Norman war selbst
ein ausgezeichneter
Pianist. Niels Wilhelm
Gade, der bedeutendste
romantische Komponist
Dänemarks, war
Dirigent des Leipziger
Gewandhausorchesters und
Freund von Mendelssohn
undSchumann.

Richard
Strauss (1864-1949)
originally wrote this
work for solo piano and
orchestra under the title
Scherzo in D minor in
1886 for conductor and
pianist Hans von
Bülow, a large
influence on Strauss'
career. Von Bülow,
however, consider the
work a complicated piece
of nonsense and wanted
nothing to do it.
Discouraged, Strauss set
the work aside until
1889, when he met
Scottish pianist Eugen
d'Albert, who liked it
while also suggesting
some changes. With a new
title, Burleske, and a
dedication to d'Albert,
the work was premiered on
June 21st, 1890 in
Eisenach at the
Tonkünstlerfest with
d'Albert at the piano and
Strauss conducting.
Despite this, Strauss
remained convinced that
the work lacked merit and
refused to have the work
published until 1894,
although it eventually
became one of his
favorite works. Strauss
never gave the work an
opus number, but many
consider it to be Op. 11,
which is actually
assigned to his Horn
Concerto No. 1 in E-flat.

Liszt s Piano Sonata in B
minor, first drafted in
1849, is one of his most
innovative piano works.
The handwritten, final
version was completed on
2 February 1853, and was
first published in April
1854. Liszt dedicated the
work to Robert Schumann
as a response to Schumann
previously dedicating his
C Major Fantasy to Liszt.
The Sonata in B Minor was
premiered on 22 January
22 1857, by the Liszt s
youngest daughter s
husband, Hans von
Bülow, who was a
renowned pianist and
conductor.This
publication contains not
only musical scores of

also a detailed foreword
in English and German as

Heinrich
Poos is not the first
composer inspired by
Friedrich Gottlieb
Klopstock's poem 'Die
Auferstehung', as even
Gustav Mahler had already
used these verses in the
fifth movement of his
Second Symphony
'Auferstehung'. Mahler
was inspired to use a
choral movement at the
end of his symphony at
the funeral of the
conductor Hans von
Bülow where a choir
sang a chorale based on
said text by Klopstock.
Heinrich Poos wrote his
deeply moving choral
piece in remembrance of
the organist Hubert
Schoonbrodt.

1856 pressing financial
obligations forced Wagner
to interrupt the
composition of the Ring
to work on Tristan und
Isolde. He initially
planned a work that was
modest in its production
and performance demands.
The project was also
given priority not least
because of the prospect
of the royalties which he
would then receive. He
once again turned to
Breitkopf & Hartel for
the performance material:
'Tristan und Isolde' is
scheduled to be given its
first performance at the
end of this year. I still
hope that it will take
place in Karlsruhe under
my guidance. Due to the
celebrity that I have now
acquired, I assume that a
new and easily
performable work of mine
should be able to spread
very quickly across the
German stages in its
first winter season.
Wagner was wrong.
although the publisher
had spent a great deal of
time and money in
producing preliminary
material, Wagner wrote to
Breitkopf & Hartel from
Munich in November 1864:
The squalor of Germany's
opera singers and the
vile condition of its
opera houses have so far
dissuaded me from
allowing a performance of
'Tristan und Isolde'.
What I needed was an
impassioned young monarch
to restore my courage.
Next spring you will hear
about the work's premiere
in Munich, and you will
then hopefully become
more confident about this
publication.
Richa
rd Wagner wrote Tristan
and Isolde in the years
1857 to 1859. The first
edition was published by
Breitkopf & Hartel in
Leipzig in 1860. The
world premiere took place
in the Konigliches Hof-
und National-Theater in
Munich on 10 June 1865
under the direction of
Hans von Bulow.
