Peter Schindler
about Gedanken uber die
Zeit:Paul Fleming was
one of the most important
lyric poets in German
Baroque literature. He
wrote his poem Gedanken
uber die Zeit in his
early twenties; it was
first published in 1634
as an epitaph. All the
nuances of the concept of
time are artistically
contrasted, and the motif
Zeit (time) is explored
and played with in a
dialectical
manner.The male
voices begin in unison at
an andante maestoso
tempo, followed by a
leisurely progress in
homophonic writing in a
slightly freer rhythm. A
lively middle section
follows which leads into
the opening motif again
in the last section. The
third section contains a
fugue, and the end is
unison once again. And so
the words are like a
manifesto by the poet.

As the title
suggests, this piece
comprises a set of
variations on an original
chorale,which is
presented in the opening
bars.The chorale uses the
dark middle and lower
sections of the band and
is extended with minor
variations until a pause
leads to the first real
variation, marked Vivo.
This is in the form of a
moto perpetuo. The second
variation is a beautiful
Andante introduced by a
solo clarinet. Following
a full band climax the
final variation opens
with quiet, nervous
energy until its main
theme is introduced.The
chorale makes a brief
appearance until the main
theme reappears. This
leads to a triumphant
final augmented statement
of the chorale theme,
decorated by theflorid
clarinet theme in the
upper woodwinds. A
dazzling new concert
work.
Zoals de
titel al aangeeft,
bestaat het stuk uit een
aantal variaties op een
oorspronkelijk koraal,
dat aan het begin wordt
ge ntroduceerd. Het
koraal, stevig verankerd
in c mineur, komt naar
voren in de donkere
midden- en lage
sectiesvan het orkest en
wordt uitgebouwd met
variaties in mineur,
totdat een korte pauze de
overgang vormt naar de
eerste echte variatie,
Vivo getiteld. Dit is een
moto perpetuo. De tweede
variatie, een krachtige
Andante, introduceerteen
soloklarinet. Na een
climax in het hele orkest
vangt de laatste variatie
aan met een stille,
nerveuze energie totdat
het hoofdthema naar voren
komt. Het koraal duikt
even op totdat het
hoofdthema weer
verschijnt. Dit leidtnaar
een glorierijke laatste
reprise van het
koraalthema in
verbreding, omspeeld met
het zwierige
klarinetthema in het hoge
hout. Een verbluffend
nieuw
concertwerk.
In
drei sehr
unterschiedlichen
Variationen kommen in
diesem Werk alle Register
des Blasorchesters zum
Zug: Die mittleren und
tieferen Register stellen
den originalen Choral in
Moll vor, darauf folgt
die erste, lyrische
Variation im
Tenorregister. Eine
Solo-Klarinette
präsentiert die
metrische zweite
Variation, abgelöst
vom gesamten
Blasorchester. Die hohen
Holzbläser spielen
eine wichtige Rolle in
der dritten Variation,
die zunächst verhalten
einsetzt, dann aber das
Werk zu einem
triiumphalen Schluss
führt. Ein
interessantes Werk, das
keine Wünsche bei
Musikern oder Zuhörern
offen
lässt!

Petr
Iljitsch Tschaikowsky,
whom Igor Stravinsky
charakterized as being
'deeply national',
represents the
culmination of 'Russion
Classical music' of the
late-eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries.
Probably the most
versatile of Russian
composers, he made great
and lasting contributions
to all genres - operas,
ballets, incidental
music, symphonies and
other orchestral works,
chamber music, piano
music, sacred and secural
choral music, romances,
Lieder and folk-song
arrangements -
establishing a special
place for Russion music
within the European
tradition. Publications
of the first complete
edition of Tschaikowsky's
works was started in the
centenary year of his
birth, 1940. Publication
of a second edition will
begin in 1993, the
centenary of his death.
There are important
reason, both editorial
and in terms of content,
for a second edition to
follow so soon. In the
old edition, ideological
considerations meant that
some of the texts which
Tschaikowsky set to music
were arbitrarily altered.
Similarly, quotations of
the old Russian national
anthem were replaced by
other music. A number of
works, or independent
versions, werde
completely overlooked.
For example, the full
score of the opera
'Vakula the Smith' (the
first version of
Cerevicki) and the
unfinished Symphony in E
flat major werde not
standardized; in some
cases no textual analysis
was offered, and critical
apparatures were simply
dispensed with.The new
complete edition will
remedy these
shortcomings. In addition
to the composer's final
versions, it will include
alternative and earlier
versions of works, as
well as fragments and
incomplete works, all
reproduced faithfully
from the sources.
Documentation and
discussion will be
provided in Critical
Commentaries. Piano
reductions exist of the
stage works, concertos
and concertante pieces as
well as of some of the
cantatas and orchestral
works, either written by
Tschaikowsky himself, or
revised or authorized by
him. These are all to be
included in the edition
which, with its
historico-critical
approach, will address
the need both of scholars
and of practical
musicians.The edition of
musical works (Serie
I-IX) is supplemented by
a facsimile edition of
all of Tschaikowsky's
surviving sketches (Serie
X), the texts of his
diaries, writings and
letters, including the
three-volume
Tschaikowsky-Mekk
correspondence (Serie
XI), a two-volume
catalogue of works and a
single-volume
Tschaikowsky
Encyclopaedia (Series
XII).

The
organ is the instrument
on which the young
Giacomo Puccini began his
career as a musician.
Through the rediscovery
of a considerable number
of hand-written pieces,
which he composed after
1870 as part of his
duties as organist in the
churches of Lucca,
several primary sources
are now available. These
give an insight into the
beginnings of his musical
activities which have
only been known about
from anecdotes from his
first biographers until
now. Puccini's organ
repertoire includes works
which were typical for
liturgical organ music at
that time: sonatas for
the main sections of the
mass, versets which were
substituted for Gregorian
chant, marches, which
were played after the
mass (exceptionally even
waltzes), and even a
pastorale for Christmas
time. This music was
written with the sound of
instruments made in
Tuscany in mind. These
have just one manual, a 8
foot Principale register
and a small pedalboard
always coupled to the
manual. In addition there
were several solo stops
divided into bass and
soprano.Puccini
contributed with
originality to the
renewal of Italian organ
practice, which began in
his day to discard its
operatic style in favor
of a style more suited to
the liturgy.

“Donâ€

anyone’s advice,
but listen to the lessons
of the wind passing and
telling the history of
the world.†Claude
Debussy Since the dawn of
time, the wind has played
an important role in all
civilisations. Worshipped
as a deity,
“mastermindâ€
of poetry, driving force,
or heaven’s
messenger, the wind took
on the most varied shapes
according to the era and
people. In Claude
Debussy’s time,
music listened to the
voice of nature, and
imagination found its
primary rights again.
This importance of wind
was the inspiration for
Maxime Aulio’s
work Whispering Wind with
its suspended
atmospheres, vaporous
lines and luminous
colours. The wind
caresses the canvas. A
fascinatingnew work for

In de tijd van Claude

Franse sensibiliteit die
Maxime Aulio’s
werk Whispering

suggereert en roept

indrukwekkende precisie.
Een mooie en bijzondere

Seit

Vor allem auch zu

Linien und leuchtenden
Farben aus. Ein sehr
ausdruckvolles
Werk!

The
Jagdquartett (Hunt
Quartet), which Jorg
Widmann wrote as his
third string quartet in
2003, following the
Choralquartett, also
begins with a visible
gesture. After a short
signal cry from the
performers, the piece
starts by quoting Robert
Schumann's Papillons op.
2, and for its full
duration retains this
gesture, these starting
sounds. The degrees of
recognizability do change
continuously, to be sure,
in the furious, racing
organism of the score.
The contours change into
forms on another level,
yet now and then the
begining material returns
clearly to the fore,
initiated anew by a cry
from the performers, and
is then digested or
mutated as a rhythmic
study into a field of
harmonic experimentation.
On rare occasions, there
are moments of pause - as
though the musicians were
testing the atmosphere,
as though they were
sensing the weather, so
as ultimately to continue
playing the quartet
across the fields an
forests of notes. A hunt
after joyful performance,
a chase, the whip
cracking, after the thing
to be shot, the sound,
its performer, perhaps
the composer himself? - A
last shout, morendo, dal
niente... - The victim is
not the audience, at any
rate.When comparing the
output of string quartets
from the 18th century to
thetime of Schumann, it
appears to have dropped
considerably. Schumann
composed only three
complete quartets, all of
them in the so-called
'chamber music year'
1842. Jorg Widmann, who
counts Robert Schumann
among his greatest
inspirations, finished a
series of five string
quartets in 2005, at the
same age as Schumann. The
quartets in the cycle
form in themselves the
characters of the
movements of the
classical quartet.
Jagdquartett represents
the fast middle movement,
the scherzo. Widmann's
work appears rough and
wild in the style of
Schumann's alter ego
Florestan. His hunt
begins in the tempo of
'allegro vivace assai'
with the final theme of
Schumann's Papillons
which often appears or is
cited in many of
Schumann's compositions.
Widmann eventually
dismantles the thematic
material of his fierce
quartet, thus
skeletonising his
prey.
