The ancient
Egyptian empire began
around 3100 B.C. and
continued for over 3000
years until Alexander the
Great conquered the
country in 332 B.C. Over
the centuries, the
Egyptian empire grew and
flourished into a highly
developed society. They
invented hieroglyphics,
built towering pyramids
(including the Great
Pyramid of Giza, the
oldest of the Seven
Wonders of the World),
and the created many
household items we still
use today, including
toothbrushes, toothpaste,
eyeliner, black ink, and
the forerunner of
modern-day paper.
Included among their
achievements were a
series of highly
developed funerary
practices and beliefs in
the Afterlife. As the
average lifespan of an
Egyptian hovered around
30 years, living past the
death of oneAs physical
body was a legitimate
concern. Egyptians
believed that upon death,
their souls would
undertake a harrowing
journey through the
Netherworld. If they
survived the horrific
creatures and arduous
trials that awaited them,
then their souls would be
reunified with their
bodies (hence the need to
preserve the body through
mummification) and live
forever in a perfect
version of the life they
had lived in Egypt. To
achieve this, Egyptians
devised around 200
magical spells and
incantations to aid souls
on the path to the
Afterlife. These spells
are collectively called
The Book of the Dead.
Particular spells would
be chosen by the family
of the deceased and
inscribed on the tombAs
walls and scrolls of
papyrus, as well as on a
stone scarab placed over
the deceasedAs heart.
Subsequent collections of
spells and mortuary
texts, such as The Book
of Gates, assisted a soul
in navigating the twelve
stages of the
Netherworld. Not only did
these spells protect and
guide the soul on this
dangerous path, but they
also served as a
safeguard against any
unbecoming behavior an
Egyptian did while alive.
For instance, if a person
had robbed another while
alive, there was a spell
that would prevent the
soulAs heart from
revealing the truth when
in the Hall of Judgment.
Rites for the Afterlife
follows the path of a
soul to the Afterlife. In
Inscriptions from the
Book of the Dead
(movement 1), the soul
leaves the body and
begins the journey,
protected by spells and
incantations written on
the tombAs walls. In
Passage though the
Netherworld (movement 2),
the soul is now on a
funerary barque, being
towed through the
Netherworld by four of
the regionAs inhabitants.
We hear the soul slowly
chanting incantations as
the barque encounters
demons, serpents,
crocodiles, lakes of
fire, and other terrors.
The soul arrives at The
Hall of Judgment in
movement 3. Standing
before forty-two divine
judges, the soul
addresses each by name
and gives a A!negative
confessionA(r) connected
to each judge (i.e. A!I
did not rob,A(r) A!I did
not do violence,A(r) and
so on). Afterwards, the
soulAs heart is put on a
scale to be weighed
against a feather of
MaAat, the goddess of
truth. If the heart
weighs more than the
feather, it will be eaten
by Ammut, a hideous
creature that lies in
wait below the scale, and
the soul will die a
second and permanent
death (this was the worst
fear of the Egyptians).
But if the heart is in
balance with the feather,
the soul proceeds onward.
The final stage of the
journey is the arrival at
The Field of Reeds
(movement 4), which is a
perfect mirror image of
the soulAs life in
ancient Egypt. The soul
reunites with deceased
family members, makes
sacrifices to the
Egyptian gods and
goddess, harvests crops
from plentiful fields of
wheat under a brilliant
blue sky, and lives
forever next to the
abundant and nourishing
waters of the Nile. Rites
for the Afterlife was
commissioned by the
Barlow Endowment on
behalf of the Akropolis
Reed Quintet, Calefax
Reed Quintet, and the

One of
the most dramatic pieces
you will ever encounter
is found in this scene
from the passion of
Christ before Pilate.
From the powerful martial
opening theme depicting
the Roman inquisition to
the fugue that displays
the violence and
cacophony of the mob's
cries, this anthem is
unrelenting in its
impact. A difficult
moment to translate into
music but an important
moment to experience
because it reminds of the
price of grace!

powerful in both lyric

We can't live like this

Why is it always a fight?
If we just respect each

This work is
based on the biblical
story of the martyrdom of
Saint Stephen,
traditionally regarded as
the first Christian
martyr, asrecounted in
the Acts of the Apostles.
Stephen was a member of
the early Church in
Jerusalem. He was an
inspired and charismatic
preacher, but he aroused
great hostility among the
members of the various
synagogues by his
teachings, and he was
accused of blasphemy. At
his trial he looked up to
heaven and declared that
he saw God in his Glory,
with Jesus standing at
his right hand. This so
enraged the authorities
that he was flung from
the city and stoned to
death. As he died, he
prayed that the Lord
Jesus would receive his
spirit, and that his
killers would beforgiven.
In this setting the choir
recounts the story in
Latin, whilst the solo
horn music depicts the
violence of the stoning.
The work endswith a
quotation from Chopin's
Ballade No. 2 in F, Op.

Cathedral Chapter of St.
Stephen's Cathedral,

Text:
excerpt from
Brading by Marjorie
PickthallHere, where the
legions parted; Here,
where the shields were
laid, Wild orchid,
honey-hearted, Grows in
the wind-swept
shade.Here, where the
soldiers rested; Here,
where they set their
spears, The little larks,
brown-breasted, Fall down
like falling tears.Here,
where the swords came
after; Here, where the
ships went by,The
sea-winds send their
laughter Between the
downs and the sky.Program
note:Between the downs
and the sky is a
meditation on the text
and the notion of here.
Reflective and
commemorative in nature,
the poem speaks to themes
of remembrance and our
shared connections to
humanity translated
through the natural
world. Pickthall pairs
anthropomorphized images
of nature against the
impacts of human violence
and strife.I am drawn to
the location-less setting
of “hereâ€. We
are left with a certain
placeless-ness in the
poem. “Hereâ€
could mean anywhere and
everywhere; it could also
mean right in front of us
in this exact moment.
“Here†is
also a call to attention,
here where we witness,
where we notice, where we
are called to. Here,
where we love, where we
mourn, where we hope to
become whole.Musically,
“here†is
metamorphosed through
various ostinati gestures
as if to depict memory,
reflections, echoes which
reverberate long after
the initial source, a
heart beat, relentless
waves pounding shores,
etc. The work also
juxtaposes extreme high
and low registers
particularly in the piano
writing to capture the
title image of the
“here†found
in-between the downs and
the sky.The work moves in
and out of unison, two
part, and optional three
part writing; from m. 45
to the end, the middle
line baritone part is
completely optional. The
music functions the same
with or without the inner
voice part. This is done
to aid in the
accessibility of the
work, to make the music
as approachable and
successful to groups of
all abilities.

SYNOPSIS
Aribert Reimann's
'Trilogie lyrique' is
based on three plays by
Maurice Maeterlinck: In
L'Intruse, a family is
sitting at the table with
their blind grandfather.
They are waiting for the
doctor to arrive and tend
to his daughter who is
lying ill in bed after
having given birth: her
new-born son has not yet
made a single sound. The
old man senses that
something is wrong due to
the uneasy atmosphere in
the room. Who is sitting
in our midst? he asks. He
is the only one who
cansee the presence of
death. Interieur: Once
again a family is
gathered round the table
in the evening, but this
time we observe the
action from outside,
looking through the
window with the
grandfather and a
stranger: no sound can be
heard. Outside the house,
the stranger reports that
the eldest daughter has
drowned and that he has
pulled her out of the
river. Although the
corpse is already being
carried through the
village to the family,
the grandfather cannot
bring himself to destroy
this idyll. La Mort de
Tintagiles: The young
Tintagiles is told a
story about a mysterious
castle and the aged queen
who has all potential
heirsto the throne
murdered. His siblings
sense that Tintagiles has
been summoned to the
castle to be murdered,
but nobody openly
expresses this fact. It
is the sinister
messengers of death from
the interludes, now
visible as the queens
servants, who ful?l her
demand and snatch the
sleeping boy from his
sisters'arms. Commentary
'In comparison with his
Medea for example with
its stormy outbreaks of
emotion and violence,
Reimann's score is worked
in an impressive
refinement of sound. It
begins with rumbling,
hesitating and expressive
music in the first
section, demanding highly
ingenious sound effects
from the lower strings
including tapping and
faltering glissandos in
its noisy expression of
mortal fear. Inthe second
part, the woodwind
formation plays at times
almost in chamber music
fashion and is then
suddenly painfully
shrill. The third part
luxuriates and rages in
its rich, full
orchestration. The manner
in which Reimann displays
his mastery in textural
shading, the invention of
sounds welling up and
fading away, the rhythmic
and melodic capacity of
suffering and the music's
inner violence are all
utterly
compelling.'(Wolfgang
Schreiber, Opernwelt,
November 2017).

In Greek
mythology, Boreas is the
God of the North
Wind. When thinking
of the north wind we
particularly think of the
bleak wind coming from
the freezing cold north,
but in Homers' work we
see a more varied
picture. As shown in
the following two
stories, Boreas often
does play the role of a
storm wind that blows
forth heavy dark clouds
while whipping up the
dark waves of the
tempestuous sea to
mountainous heights.
When the stake of the
fallen Patroclos refuses
to burn, Achilles begs
for some wind. When
Iris, the swift messenger
of the Gods, asks the
winds for assistance,
they raise themselves up
with tremendous roaring
and rush to Troy.
Upon theirarrival they
blow the divine fire of
Patroclos' stake far up
into the sky. When
Troy was destroyed, the
Greeks returned home.
After many wanderings,
Odysseus, however, ends
up with the beautiful
nymph, Calypso, who keeps
him as a prisoner. As
ordered by Zeus, Calypso
frees him and sends him
off on a handmade wooden
raft. At sea,
Odysseus is threatened by
the aggressive sea god,
Poseidon, who stirs up
the winds and thrashes
the waves with his
trident. The goddess,
Athena, stems the
violence of all the winds
except for the north
wind, and thus it is
Boreas, who sends
Odysseus to the land of
the hospitable
Phaiakes.
Jan
Bosveld composed Boreas
for OLTO, a music
association in Loenen,
The Netherlands, for
which he had served as
conductor for many years.
Turbulent movement in
both tempo and dynamics
characterize this
composition. The result
is a whirling piece that
races by in a positive
manner. Boreas is in de
Griekse mythologie de god

“Th
e Listening,” written
by Grammy-nominated
composer Cheryl B.
Engelhardt in December
2017 for VOICES 21C under
the artistic direction of
André de Quadros, draws
its inspiration from Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s
impactful 1967 speech,
“Beyond Vietnam: A Time
to Break Silence.” This
dynamic, emotion-filled
piece expresses King's
call to end societal
silence. The rhythmic
elements in the piece are
derived from the poetic
nature of King's speech.
The inclusion of a
children's choir,
inspired by the Parkland
school shooting and
subsequent protests,
symbolizes the disruption
of childhood peace by
violence. Notably, the
virtual collaboration,
featuring Donzaleigh
Abernathy, Dr. King's
goddaughter, emphasizes
the song's contemporary
relevance in addressing
social issues, and was
featured in PEOPLE.
Premiered live at the
Massachusetts Music
Educators Conference in
2018 by VOICES 21C, and
digitally released during
Black History month in
2021, “The Listening”
stands as a profound
anthem for breaking
silence and to foster
positive change.

Premiered
in 2018, the 90-minute
opera Lessons in Love and
Violence delves into the
dark and turbulent events
of Edward II's life and
death. The opera unfolds
as a taut slow-burning
arch of seven tableaux.
This work boasts
particularly rich string
textures and spectacular
ensemble writing. The
music's relationship to
the drama is often
unstable and seemingly
very spontaneous, but
beneath it all one senses
a rigorous architecture,
unflinchingly guiding the
listener deeper and
deeper into the opera's
disquieting emotional
world. This full score is
a perfect accompaniment
to the previously
published vocal score and
text.
