The Missa
Sancti Henrici is a work
of Biber's later years.
It is one of his largest
and most mature pieces of
church music. With the
skillful alternation of
the stile antico and the
stile moderno, as well as
the contrast between Solo
and Tutti, Biber attained
a structure within the
individual movements rich
in variety. In its
original architectural
conception, Salzburg
Cathedral had four
galleries, each with its
own organ, on the piers
supporting the dome at
the crossing. This
conception created the
spatial prerequisite for
double- and polychoral
performance tradition on
the Venetian model.
Biber's magnificent
sacred music brought this
tradition to a point of
culmination in a
,,colossal style that was

Dixit
Dominus is not only
Handel's first important
church work, but it also
exceeds the scope and
design of both of his
other Latin psalm
settings. Although the
exact time and occasion
for the first performance
is not clear, today the
universality of this work
make it ideal for use in
festive worship services

The
words are based on the
Easter Gospel, the
account of the
Resurrection of Jesus,
which is first joyfully
celebrated. Then follows
a call to the faithful:
every Christian must make
the Resurrection a reason
to renew himself
spiritually, so as to
complete a kind of inner
Resurrection himself. For
his scoring - which
changed slightly from
performance to
performance - Bach called
upon a five-part choir,
three trumpets and
timpani, three oboes,
taille and bassoon,
strings and basso
continuo. Score and part

Biber's
Requiem in F minor is
amongst the most
impressive settings of
the Requiem Mass of the
17th century. The exact
reason for the
composition of the
Requiem, which can be
dated to 1692, is not
known. The dark key color
of F minor is emphasized
by the instrumental
scoring for two violins,
three violas, basso
continuo and three
trombones (colla parte
with the chorus). The
vivid language of the
Requiem text offered
Biber a wealth of
possibilities for
expressive, musical
interpretation. The
intensity of the musical
language used to portray
lamenting and mourning is
impressive. In the course
of publication of the
Biber Requiem,
surprisingly the primary
source, which until now
had been thought to be
missing, resurfaced and
the edition could be
prepared based on this
astonishing discovery.
This is a work of
mid-level difficulty for
a choir and with the
clear disposition of the
string parts it is well
suited for performance by
amateur choirs. Score and
part available separately

Johann
Sebastian Bach's
Magnificat BWV 243 was
composed in its first
form in E flat, right at
the beginning of Bach's
period in Leipzig, for
the Visitation of Mary on
2.7.1723; for a further
performance on the 1st
day of Christmas, Bach
added four extra
Christmas movements
following a Leipzig
tradition. Only in the
1730s did Bach arrange
the Magnificat in the
well-known version in D;
the orchestration was
slightly altered,
particularly improving
the considerable
practical performance
problems encountered in
the E flat major version.
Our critical new edition
contains the version of
the Magnificat in D,
based on Bach's autograph
score. For Christmas
performances the extra
movements are available
separately, transposed
for performance with the
D major version of the
Magnificat (Carus
31.243/50). Score and
part available separately
