which has a different
theme every year. The
theme for 2019 was
‘science
fiction’, so
composer Philip Sparke
chose to write a robot
march. After a quirky
introduction featuring
trumpet calls and
chromaticfigures, the
main theme appears in a
minor mode on clarinet
and tenor sax and is then
taken up by the full
band. A change of key
heralds a new theme, led
by the trumpet and again
repeated by the full
ensemble. A further
change ofkey introduces a
legato
‘trio’
melody over a rather
robotic accompaniment:
instruments are added bit
by bit until a climax is
reached. Small motifs
from the introduction
then lead back to a full
recapitulation,
revisiting thefirst two
themes in new guises
before finishing the
march with a

A stunning
and heart-wrenching
composition based on the
Jewish folk son Shlof,
Mayn Kind. You can
hear the emotional
content pour out of this
piece written in memory
of an outstanding
orchestra director. The
piece beginnings with
original material to set
the tone, followed by
a clarinet solo on the
song. It then develops
through a variety of
different harmonic
presentation before
building to a nice key
change and climatic
moment. The piece ends as
it began, but with a more
hopeful tone. An amazing
piece. Sleep, My Child
was commissioned by the
Madison Middle School
Band and Orchestra in
Tampa, Florida, and is
dedicated to the memory
of their Director of
Orchestras Kevin Frye.
Director of Bands Chris
Shultz championed the
commissioning of this
piece to honor Kevin
after he passed away in
December 2016. Mr. Frye
was a beloved member of
the staff at Madison
Middle as well as the
music community of Tampa
and the state of
Florida. I was a
personal friend of
Kevin’s. We were
in several musical groups
together when we were
young that were formative
to both of our musical
careers. I also guest
conducted his Madison
Middle School Orchestra
several times over the
past four years. His
musicianship, teaching
skills and love for his
students were
exemplary.When taking on
the challenge of writing
a piece to honor
Kevin’s legacy,
Mr. Shultz and I decided
to try and include
several important aspects
of Kevin’s life
into the piece. Kevin was
proudly Jewish, a
fantastic trumpet player
and loved Jazz. With that
in mind, and after a lot
of research, a Jewish
folk song Shlof, Mayn
Kind was selected as the
basis for the piece, not
to be religious, but to
honor his faith and
heritage. Plus it is a
beautiful song, and I
felt the title reflected
the sentiment I was
looking to express, which
is of someone taking rest
after a long battle with
illness. Thus, a lullaby
seemed appropriate.I also
wanted to incorporate
Jazz into the piece, but
in a concert setting, so
you will hear as the
piece develops, the
harmonies of the folk
song expand into ones
found more commonly in
Jazz compositions. Not
in a far out way, but in
a subtle way to again
honor this part of his
life. For example the
climactic moment of the
piece at the fermata in
m. 57 is a Dbmaj9#11
chord. It appropriately
give the piece the angst
that I was looking for at
this moment in the piece,
while honoring the
importance of Jazz in
Kevin’s musical
life.The piece was also
conceived to include both
the Madison band and
orchestra in the
performance at the
premiere. I wanted the
pieces to work separately
by the band and
separately by the
orchestra, but I also
wanted them to be able to
play the piece together
to honor Kevin.The piece
begins with original
material designed to set
the mood of the piece
with a tempo/style
marking of pensive, but
also as material that I
used as connective
musical tissue between
statements of the folk
song. After this
introduction, the folk
song is presented by a
solo violin (or clarinet)
with orchestral
accompaniment in a simple
straight forward
presentation of the song.
This is followed by a
woodwind section
statement of the folk
song accompanied by muted
trumpets. During this
presentation the harmony
starts to expand with
more color notes in the
chords. The low brass are
added half way through
this statement to add
depth and lushness.The
introductory material
returns, but with some
angry hits in the lower
voices. This leads to a
full ensemble state of
new material that is used
to transition to the
climax of the piece, and
to build tension. After
the build, the piece
modulates to a shortened
statement of the folk
song with more advanced
harmonies and an active
counter line in the
violas, horns, saxes and
first clarinets to
further build the
tension. This tension
is released at the
fermata in m. 57, as
mentioned above. After a
thoughtful pause, the
piece concludes with a
completion of the folk
song again with a solo
violin (or clarinet)
followed by a return of
the introductory material
to tie the piece
together. The piece ends
hopeful, with a solo
trumpet (Kevin’s
instrument) that is
dissonant at first, but
then resolves as if to
say - everything will be
OK! It has been my
distinct honor to have
been asked to write this
piece in Kevin’s
memory! I hope that in
some small way the piece
helps to bring comfort to
his family, students,
colleagues and to all
those that knew
him!–Larry

This
“Grand
Overture†was
commissioned by the
“Nagano Community
Band†- Japan- on
occasion of its jubilee
in 1992 and is dedicated
to the band’s
conductor, Ikuo
Inagaki.The work is based
upon three main themes,
each symbolising a
certain theme. The first
part is characterized by
its bright themes played
mainly by the brass,
accompanied by the
woodwinds and festive
percussion. This part
symbolizes the jubilee
which is the origin of
the composition. This is
followed by a bouncing
allegro, in which each
register of the band
displays brilliant
techniques. Especially
the woodwinds come to the
fore! This movement
depicts the
industriousness and
enthousiasm shown by the
members of
the“Nagano
Community Band†in
the carrying out of their
hobby. A third, main
theme, is choral-like in
character and is
displayed both in the
(soft) brass as well as
in the warm medium
register of the reeds.
Here, nature’s
beaty in and around the
city of Nagano is
musically celebrated.
Following a
“chamber-music
episode†(featuring
the flute, oboe,
clarinet, alto-saxophone
and horn) the initial
allegro re-occurs,
weaving its way towards a
grandiose finale, in
which the two previous
themes are once again
apparent. Due to its very
colourful scoring and the
enormous diversity of
musical thoughts and
ideas, this composition
is a fascinating and
memorable piece, worthy a
jubilee overture!
Olympica
is gebaseerd op drie
hoofdthema’s. Het
eerste thema wordt
gekenmerkt door een
stralende thematiek in
het koper, omspeeld door
het hout en feestelijk
slagwerk. Dan volgt een
pittig en virtuoos
allegro, waarin met
namede houtblazers
uitgebreid aan bod komen.
Het derde thema is
koraalmatig van karakter.
Na een kamermuziekpassage
komt het allegro terug,
dat uitmondt in een
grootse finale. De
kleurrijke instrumentatie
en veelzijdigheid van
dezecompositie maken een
sprankelend optreden
mogelijk.

Salutatio
n was commissioned by
Japanese conductor and
broadcaster, Yutaka
Nishida, a dear friend of
the composer Philip
Sparke. Salutation
follows fairly
conventional march form.
A short fanfare
introduces the main
theme, played by
clarinets and saxophones.
A bridge passage, mainly
in the brass, heralds a
change of key and a
legato second
subject, again played
initially by the
clarinets, which leads to
the conventional trio
theme, which is then
repeated by the full
band. Sections of the
second subject lead back
to the home key and a
return of the main theme,
embellished with
woodwinds.
Salu
tation is geschreven
in opdracht van de
Japanse dirigent en
radiopresentator Yutaka
Nishida, een goede vriend
van Philip Sparke. Het
werk volgt een vrij
conventionele marsvorm:
een korte fanfare
introduceert het
hoofdthema, gespeeld door
de klarinetten en
saxofoons. Een
bridgepassage,
voornamelijk door het
koper gespeeld, kondigt
een modulatie en een
legato gedeelte aan,
aanvankelijk door de
klarinetten gebracht en
uitmondend in het
conventionele triothema,
dat daarna door het hele
orkest wordt herhaald.
Stukjes uit het legato
gedeelte brengen ons
terug naar de
oorspronkelijke toonsoort
en het hoofdthema, dat
wordt versierd met
motieven in het hout. Dan
volgtnog een korte coda
in het koper.

Salutatio
n was commissioned by
Japanese conductor and
broadcaster, Yutaka
Nishida, a dear friend of
the composer Philip
Sparke. Salutation
follows fairly
conventional march form.
A short fanfare
introduces the main
theme, played by
clarinets and saxophones.
A bridge passage, mainly
in the brass, heralds a
change of key and a
legato second
subject, again played
initially by the
clarinets, which leads to
the conventional trio
theme, which is then
repeated by the full
band. Sections of the
second subject lead back
to the home key and a
return of the main theme,
embellished with
woodwinds.
Salu
tation is geschreven
in opdracht van de
Japanse dirigent en
radiopresentator Yutaka
Nishida, een goede vriend
van Philip Sparke. Het
werk volgt een vrij
conventionele marsvorm:
een korte fanfare
introduceert het
hoofdthema, gespeeld door
de klarinetten en
saxofoons. Een
bridgepassage,
voornamelijk door het
koper gespeeld, kondigt
een modulatie en een
legato gedeelte aan,
aanvankelijk door de
klarinetten gebracht en
uitmondend in het
conventionele triothema,
dat daarna door het hele
orkest wordt herhaald.
Stukjes uit het legato
gedeelte brengen ons
terug naar de
oorspronkelijke toonsoort
en het hoofdthema, dat
wordt versierd met
motieven in het hout. Dan
volgtnog een korte coda
in het koper.
Salutation
wurde von dem japanischen
Dirigenten und Moderator
Yutaka Nishida in Auftrag
gegeben, der ein guter
Freund des Komponisten
Philip Sparke ist.
Salutation folgt
weitgehend der
traditionellen
Marschform. Eine kurze
Fanfare leitet das
Hauptthema ein, das von
den Klarinetten und
Saxophonen gespielt wird.
Eine Ãœberleitung, die
in erster Linie von den
Blechbläsern gespielt
wird, kündigt einen
Tonartwechsel sowie ein
zweites Thema im Legato
an, das anfangs wieder
von den Klarinetten
gespielt wird und zum
traditionellen Trio
führt, welches dann
vom gesamten Orchester
wiederholt wird. Teile
des zweiten Themas
führen in die
Ausgangstonart zurück
und das Hauptthema,
dasvon den Holzbläsern
verziert wird, kehrt
wieder.

This piece
was commissioned by the
'Concert Band
Vlamertinge' and is a
plea for peace: the title
translates as 'Peace on
Earth'. This is expressed
by means of the vocal
contribution expected
from the performers. In
various places of the
piece you can recognize,
the words 'Et In Terra
Pax' - an appeal for
peace - at first jumbled
together but later more
rhythmically structured,
developing into
synchronized massed
voices.The work starts
with a pentatonic theme
based on the notes D, E,
G, A and C (taken from
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE'
and the name of the
conductor, NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe). A
somewhat sad melody is
developed during an
orchestral climax which
leads to the
firstexplosion of sound
(measure 62 onwards).
Suddenly the opening
measures are recaptured,
albeit with a differently
colored sound: the words
'Et In Terra Pax' bring
the first movement to a
close. A restless Allegro
follows which abruptly
stops and is replaced by
a calming cho-rale-like
passage. A narrator reads
aloud the poem 'Sonnet'
by the young poet Charles
Hamilton Sorley, who was
killed during World War
I. This poem fittingly
puts into words the
cruelty and senselessness
of war. After the
expanded recapitulation
of the allegro, the
broad, almost infinite
atmosphere of the
beginning returns.
Clarinet and English horn
play the pentatonic
opening theme once more,
this time broadly, while
the words 'Et In Terra...
Pax' are repeated again
and again by the rest of
the orchestra.The
composer has purposely
avoided all forms of
aggression and bombastic
sounds regularly used in
works about war. Fear of
violence and destruction
can be heard and felt
during the allegro
passages. The charged
opening makes way in the
end for hope: May
peacefulness replace
cruelty in everyday life,
too.
Dieses Werk
wurde im Auftrag der
Concert Band Vlamertinge
geschrieben und ist ein
Pladoyer an den Frieden:
Der Titel bedeutet dann
auch 'Frieden auf Erden'.
Dies kommt unter anderem
im vokalen Anteil der
Ausfuhrenden zum
Ausdruck. An
verschiedenenStellen des
Werkes erklingen, anfangs
durcheinander dann zu
einem rhythmischen und
strukturierten
Synchrongesang vereint,
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' wie ein flehendes
Gebet fur den
Frieden.
Ein
pentatonisches Thema
formt den Anfang dieses
Werkes, basierend auf den
Noten D, E, G, A, und C,
die dem Namen:
'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtingE'
und dem Namen des
Dirigenten NiCk
VAnDEnDriessChe
entstammen. Wahrend der
orchestralen Klimax, die
zu einemersten
Klangausbruch fuhrt (ab
Takt 62), entsteht eine
etwas traurige Melodie.
Plotzlich werden dann die
Eingangstakte
wiederaufgenommen, wenn
auch mit einer
veranderten Klangfarbe;
die Worte 'Et In Terra
Pax' runden den ersten
Teil daraufhin ab.
Esfolgt ein unruhiges
Allegro, das uberraschend
durch eine Choralartigen
Passage voller Ruhe
unterbrochen wird. Eine
Sprechstimme liest
wahrenddessen das Gedicht
Sonnet des jungen
Dichters Charles Hamilton
Sorley vor, der im ersten
Weltkriegfiel. Es findet
fur die Grausamkeit und
Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges
die passenden Worte.
Nachdem das Allegro,
diesmal mit einigen
Ausbreitungen, wiederholt
wird, kehrt die weite,
beinahe unendliche
Atmosphare des Beginns
wieder zuruck.
Klarinettenspielen
zusammen mit einem
Englischhorn das
pentatonische
Eingangsthema ein letztes
Mal in ausgebreiteter
Fassung, wobei das Et In
Terra Pax' durch den Rest
des Orchesters stets
wiederholt wird.Der
Komponist hat bewusst auf
jegliche Form der
Aggression oder
bombastischen Vertonung,
die in so vielen Werken
uber den Krieg zu finden
ist, vermieden. Dennoch
ist die Angst vor Gewalt
und Zerstorung vor allem
in den Allegro-Passagen
deutlich zuhoren und zu
fuhlen. Am Ende macht die
anfangliche Spannung
jedoch der Hoffnung
Platz: Moge die
Friedlichkeit auch im
taglichen Leben die
Grausamkeit
verbannen...

Chambers has woven a
multitude of grooves,
colors, and uplifting
themes into To Create a
Voice. Chambers has
attempted to convey
distinct moods and
emotions that this
educator tried to instill
in his students. In honor
of this dynamic teacher,
you will hear Hot
Cross Buns cleverly
placed throughout the
composition. To Create
a Voice was commissioned
by the Valley Concert
Band in Stockton,
California. The piece
premiered in October
2017, in memory and
celebration of Chris
Anderson, a local
musician and
educator.When writing
this piece, I tried to
convey certain moods and
emotions throughout:
soulful at the beginning
with calm woodwind chords
and solo trombone;
increased energy
throughout the various
sections of the piece;
exploration of different
grooves and colors; an
uplifting, emotional
ending that leaves the
listener with a sense of
how positive and loving
Chris was.This piece is
largely inspired by a
specific quote from
Chris:Most people would
consider the sounds
students first make on
their instruments to be
cringe-worthy, but to me
that’s music to my
ears, because
that’s the first
time students put a voice
to their instrument. Over
time those voices become
stronger; they become
clear, more confident,
and get to a point where
they use those voices to
communicate with each
other, and to their
audiences.To relate to
the first notes on the
instrument idea, I used
motifs based on the first
notes most beginners ever
play, do-re-mi, which are
introduced at the
beginning of the piece
with the trombone solo,
Chris’ instrument.
During the section at m.
15, the brass introduce a
chorale that I named
Chris’ Theme while
the woodwinds keep
reminding us of do-re-mi.
Later in the piece (mm.
71 and 79), I use these
notes again, but in
reverse, which becomes a
reference to the first
song most beginners
learn, Hot Cross Buns.
This section is also
meant to portray
Chris’ quirky and
joking side. In mm. 75
and 83, Chris’
Theme presents itself
again a couple of times
in response to Hot Cross
Buns.Toward the end, at
the uplifting moment (m.
97), do-re-mi is heard
again, but this time in
harmony with mi-fa-sol.
This represents the
ultimate satisfaction we
all feel as musicians
when we have finally
progressed enough to play
in harmony with others.
The half-time feeling in
3 at that moment also has
significance, relating
(rhythmically) to those
important three notes
again.I really hope you
enjoy performing and
listening to this piece
as much as I have enjoyed
creating it!

This piece is a
loving tribute to Mr.

contribution to the
students of Lynden for
over thirty years. The
music begins with a
spirited section
oscillating between 6/8
and 2/4 time. It should
maintain a pulsing
feeling throughout. The
main melody appears at m.
25 and has a lilting,
reminiscing quality to
it. After some further
development, it moves to
a B-section at m. 41 with
some warm brass passages.
The woodwinds should soar
over the top with their
counter line. The lower
voices take over the
melody at m. 59. The
harmony becomes more
discordant at m. 71 with
passages trading between
the brass and woodwinds.
This tension
releases into a slow
section that features a
flowing, heartfelt
melody. This builds to
the big moment at m. 112.
The timpani ushers us
back to the 6/8, 2/4
section. The melody is
now accompanied by some
flowing counterpoint at
m. 153 which leads to the
B-section again at m.
169. This time the
woodwinds take the lead
and the brass provide the
counter line. A final big
moment at m. 194 is the
culmination and high
point of the composition.
A brief fast section puts
a bow on the piece for a
rousing
finale.

As summer
ends, the chill of the
autumn air awakens
feelings within us. The
shadows are longer in
late afternoon and
darkness comes early. The
trees are losing their
leaves and their gnarled

twilight. We shudder at
the cold wind. Our pulse
quickens and we suddenly
want to return to the
safety and warmth of
home. Night falls and we
are once again at peace.
We say a final farewell
to the carefree days of
summer and accept the
relentless march of the
seasons. Winter will soon
be here.
Shadows

Artemis is the
Greek goddess of hunting
and forests. In western
art she is often pictured
with deer, lions or bears
with a bow in her hand.
The tempo of this march
is stately and the themes
are
“concertanteâ€
in character making
Artemis best suited as a
concert march rather than
a street march.
Technically this march is
not too difficult
although at times some
dexterous fingering is
necessary. The trio
melody is especially
lyrical and offers
various sections within
the band the possibility
to show off their skill
in playing the expressive
melody. This excellent
new concert march is sure
to become a classic and
be performed time and
time again.
Het
tempo van deze mars is
statig en de
thema’s zijn
concertant van karakter:
Artemis is dus
eerder geschikt als
concertmars dan als
loopmars. Technisch is
dit werk niet erg lastig
om spelen, al wordt af en
toe wel wat
vingervaardigheidvereist.
De triomelodie is echter
uitgesproken lyrisch en
biedt diverse secties
binnen het orkest de
mogelijkheid om zich
melodisch en expressief
te etaleren. Een
aangenaam klinkende en
prima speelbare
concertmars!
Artem
is ist die griechische
Göttin der Jagd und
der Wälder. Jan Van
der Roost ließ sich
zum wiederholten Male von
der griechischen
Mythologie inspirieren
und komponierte diesen
Marsch mit
gemäßigtem Tempo
und konzertanten Themen.
Obwohl technisch nicht
sehr schwer, erfordert er
doch stellenweise etwas
Fingerfertigkeit. Der
Trio-Teil ist jedoch
besonders lyrisch und
bietet verschiedenen
Registern des
Blasorchesters die
Möglichkeit, sich in
Melodie und Ausdruck zu
beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist
Artemis ein
ausgezeichneter und gut
spielbarer Konzertmarsch,
der viele Blasorchester
anspricht.
Artemis è la Dea
greca della natura
selvatica e della caccia.
Nella cultura
occidentale, è spesso
rappresentata armata di
arco e frecce e
circondata da cervi,
leoni e orsi. Evolvendosi
su un tempo maestoso e
sviluppando temi centrali
dal carattere
concertante, Artemis
rientra nella linea delle
grandi marce da concerto.
Ad eccezione di qualche
passaggio che necessita
una maggiore scioltezza
delle dita, il brano
contiene solo poche
difficolt tecniche.
Artemis è un pezzo
brillante adatto alla
maggior parte delle
bande.

Titanic, the story of the
world famous ship stood
in the spotlights once
again. Piet Swerts was
inspired by this
catastrophic saga to
compose this beautifully
narrative piece,
reflecting the masses of
people in Southampton,
playing children and the
undulating sea. The piece
gradually picks up
impetuously culminating
with the looming iceberg
and the dramatic sinking
of the Titanic.

A
stunning and
heart-wrenching
composition based on the
Jewish folk son Shlof,
Mayn Kind. You can
hear the emotional
content pour out of this
piece written in memory
of an outstanding
orchestra director. The
piece beginnings with
original material to set
the tone, followed by
a clarinet solo on the
song. It then develops
through a variety of
different harmonic
presentation before
building to a nice key
change and climatic
moment. The piece ends as
it began, but with a more
hopeful tone. An amazing
piece. Sleep, My Child
was commissioned by the
Madison Middle School
Band and Orchestra in
Tampa, Florida, and is
dedicated to the memory
of their Director of
Orchestras Kevin Frye.
Director of Bands Chris
Shultz championed the
commissioning of this
piece to honor Kevin
after he passed away in
December 2016. Mr. Frye
was a beloved member of
the staff at Madison
Middle as well as the
music community of Tampa
and the state of
Florida. I was a
personal friend of
Kevin’s. We were
in several musical groups
together when we were
young that were formative
to both of our musical
careers. I also guest
conducted his Madison
Middle School Orchestra
several times over the
past four years. His
musicianship, teaching
skills and love for his
students were
exemplary.When taking on
the challenge of writing
a piece to honor
Kevin’s legacy,
Mr. Shultz and I decided
to try and include
several important aspects
of Kevin’s life
into the piece. Kevin was
proudly Jewish, a
fantastic trumpet player
and loved Jazz. With that
in mind, and after a lot
of research, a Jewish
folk song Shlof, Mayn
Kind was selected as the
basis for the piece, not
to be religious, but to
honor his faith and
heritage. Plus it is a
beautiful song, and I
felt the title reflected
the sentiment I was
looking to express, which
is of someone taking rest
after a long battle with
illness. Thus, a lullaby
seemed appropriate.I also
wanted to incorporate
Jazz into the piece, but
in a concert setting, so
you will hear as the
piece develops, the
harmonies of the folk
song expand into ones
found more commonly in
Jazz compositions. Not
in a far out way, but in
a subtle way to again
honor this part of his
life. For example the
climactic moment of the
piece at the fermata in
m. 57 is a Dbmaj9#11
chord. It appropriately
give the piece the angst
that I was looking for at
this moment in the piece,
while honoring the
importance of Jazz in
Kevin’s musical
life.The piece was also
conceived to include both
the Madison band and
orchestra in the
performance at the
premiere. I wanted the
pieces to work separately
by the band and
separately by the
orchestra, but I also
wanted them to be able to
play the piece together
to honor Kevin.The piece
begins with original
material designed to set
the mood of the piece
with a tempo/style
marking of pensive, but
also as material that I
used as connective
musical tissue between
statements of the folk
song. After this
introduction, the folk
song is presented by a
solo violin (or clarinet)
with orchestral
accompaniment in a simple
straight forward
presentation of the song.
This is followed by a
woodwind section
statement of the folk
song accompanied by muted
trumpets. During this
presentation the harmony
starts to expand with
more color notes in the
chords. The low brass are
added half way through
this statement to add
depth and lushness.The
introductory material
returns, but with some
angry hits in the lower
voices. This leads to a
full ensemble state of
new material that is used
to transition to the
climax of the piece, and
to build tension. After
the build, the piece
modulates to a shortened
statement of the folk
song with more advanced
harmonies and an active
counter line in the
violas, horns, saxes and
first clarinets to
further build the
tension. This tension
is released at the
fermata in m. 57, as
mentioned above. After a
thoughtful pause, the
piece concludes with a
completion of the folk
song again with a solo
violin (or clarinet)
followed by a return of
the introductory material
to tie the piece
together. The piece ends
hopeful, with a solo
trumpet (Kevin’s
instrument) that is
dissonant at first, but
then resolves as if to
say - everything will be
OK! It has been my
distinct honor to have
been asked to write this
piece in Kevin’s
memory! I hope that in
some small way the piece
helps to bring comfort to
his family, students,
colleagues and to all
those that knew
him!–Larry

Stand By
Me, perhaps Ben E.

ever, was first released
in 1961 as the b-side of

A few
flavoursome introductory
bars carry the listener
off to a temple garden in
Manchuria in
North-eastern China.
Mysterious incantations
of the priests in the
temple and the scent of
incense set the scene,
while the melody tells of
two lovers. A Manchurian
wedding procession passes
by outside. In the street
the coolies are becoming
restless. Within the
temple, all is calm.
Again we hear the
incantations of the
priest before the
lovers’ theme is
heard in birdsong, with
short quotes from the
temple theme and coolie
theme to end the
piece.Vocal score

De
sfeervolle inleidende
maten van dit werk nemen
de luisteraar mee naar
een tempelhof in
Mantsjoerije, in het
noordoosten van China.
Mysterieuze bezweringen
van de priesters in de
tempel en de geur van
wierook vormen het decor,
terwijl de melodie het
verhaal van twee
geliefden vertelt. Een
Mantsoerijse
bruiloftsstoet komt
buiten langs. Op straat
worden de koelies
onrustig. In de tempel
heerst een kalme sfeer.
Opnieuw horen we de
bezweringen van de
priesters voordat het
thema van de geliefden te
horen is in vogelzang,
met korte citaten uit het
tempel- en het
koeliethema ter
afsluiting van de
compositie.Vocal score

The hymn Nun
ruhen alle Wälder (Now
All Forests Rest),
arranged by J.S. Bach
(No. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, from
Cantata BWV 13), is a
guiding light throughout
this four-movement
composition. Pütz
wrote this work as a
musical outcry against
the wilful, profit-driven
destruction of our
environment. When Bach
used the word
“ruhen†(to
rest) over 350 years ago,
it probably had a
different nuance from the
meaning it has today. At
the beginning of the 21st
century - the so-called
age of progress -
“nun ruhen alle
Wälder†should
mean “now all
forests die†.
Massive industrialization
and globalization,
coupled with pure greed,
corruption, political
scandals, an
ever-wideninggap between
the rich and poor, and
other such senseless
human actions, are
pushing our blue planet
closer and closer to the
point of no return. This
work is not intended to
be a ranting accusation.
It should remind us of
the beauty and harmony
that can exist all around
us in nature, if we take
care of it. Pütz
hopes that this will, one
day, help put a greater
emphasis on
humanity’s
survival, and coexistence
with nature rather than
the exploitation
described earlier. All
four texts were created
by Australian poet Graeme
King, whose works were
discovered by Pütz,
by chance on the
internet. Pütz was
especially captivated by
King’s clarity,
and intrigued by the
possibilities of adapting
and melding the strong
rhythmical structure of
King’s writing
with his own musical
language. The four
movements are as follows:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3. Stand
up! 4. Tomorrow The world
première of Four Earth
Songs took place on 7
July 2009 at the 14th
WASBE-Conference in
Cincinnati (USA). This
work is dedicated in
friendship to Jouke
Hoekstra, conductor, and
the Frysk Fanfare Orkest
(the Frisian
Fanfare-Orchestra).
De hymne Nun
ruhen alle Wälder,
gearrangeerd door J.S.
Bach (nr. 6, So sei nun,
Seele, deine, uit cantate
BWV 13), is de leidraad
in deze vierdelige
compositie. Pütz
schreef het werk als een
muzikaal protest tegen de
moedwillige,op winstbejag
gebaseerde vernietiging
van ons milieu. Toen Bach
het woord
‘ruhen’
(rusten) meer dan 350
jaar geleden gebruikte,
lag er waarschijnlijk een
andere nuance in dan
tegenwoordig. Aan het
begin van de 21e eeuw -
dezogenaamde eeuw van de
vooruitgang - zou
‘nun ruhen alle
Wälder’ zelfs
kunnen betekenen:
‘nu sterven alle
bossen’. De
grootschalige
industrialisatie en
globalisering, in
combinatie met pure
hebzucht, corruptie,
politieke schandalen,een
groeiende kloof tussen
arm en rijk, en andere
dwaze menselijke
verrichtingen, brengen
onze blauwe planeet
steeds verder in de
problemen, tot er
misschien geen weg terug
meer is. Dit werk is niet
bedoeld als een
beschuldigendetirade. Het
moet ons wijzen op de
schoonheid en harmonie
die in de natuur om ons
heen kan bestaan, als we
er goed voor zorgen.
Pütz hoopt dat er op
een dag meer nadruk
gelegd zal worden op het
overleven van de mensheid
invreedzame co-existentie
met de natuur, zonder de
eerdergenoemde
uitbuiting. Alle vier de
teksten zijn geschreven
door de Australische
dichter Graeme King,
wiens werk Pütz bij
toeval tegenkwam op het
internet. Hij werd
getroffendoor Kings
helderheid en raakte ge
ntrigeerd door de
mogelijkheid de sterke
ritmische structuur van
Kings teksten om te
zetten in zijn eigen
muzikale taal. De vier
delen zijn de volgende:
1. Tears of Nature 2.
Grrrevolution 3.Stand up!
4. Tomorrow De
wereldpremière van

plaats op 7 juli 2009
tijdens de 14e WASBE

Der Choral
