,,Trau er
nur dem holzernen Freund
nicht. Er ist manchmal
ein lederner (aus den
Beethoven-Konversationshe
ften) Dieses
Schlagzeugtrio, das in
enger Zusammenarbeit mit
den Widmungstragern
entstanden ist, besteht
aus drei Teilen. Es wird
durch die schiere Freude
am dramaturgisch
gebundelten Konstruieren
entlang seismischer
Bruchlinien gepragt. Die
drei Percussion-Spieler
wechseln wahrend des
Werkes zwischen drei
Setups an verschiedenen
Spielpositionen - vom
Buhnenhintergrund, uber
die Mitte der Buhne bis
vorne an der Buhnenrampe.
Dabei wird jeweils ein
anderes Klangmaterial, im
ersten Teil (Part I) das
Fell, im zweiten Teil
(Part II) das Metall und
im dritten Teil (Part
III) das Holz in den
Mittelpunkt gestellt.
Part I (5'30'') ist mit
drei O-Daikos besetzt,
die mit Fingern, Handen,
Fausten, Superballs und
Holzstaben gespielt
werden. Part II (6'00'')
ist um drei
Glockenspiele, drei
Vibraphone und drei
Sixxen gruppiert und
integriert auch
Metallinstrumente wie
Chinese Opera Gongs,
Mini-Tam-Tams und
Metalltonnen, die mit
Fussmaschine gespielt
werden. In Part III
(4'00'') spielen alle
drei Musiker mit
Rundstaben, Handen und
Rohrenglockenhammern das
mit sieben massiven
Balken aus Eschenholz
besetzte baskische
Nationalinstrument
Txalaparta, das auch
seine ganz eigene
Geschichte im Widerstand
gegen die Franco-Diktatur
hat. Reizvoll war fur
mich sowohl, dass man zu
dritt auf diesem
archaischen Instrument
wirklich aberwitzig
schnelle Rhythmen spielen
kann, als auch, dass
dieses Instrument auf
Konzertpodien klanglich
wie optisch noch vollig
neu ist - und dies, trotz
aller Schlichtheit, bei
einem unglaublichen
Reichtum an
Klangmoglichkeiten.
Kleine rhythmische
Zellen, die sich immer
wieder zu vielfaltigen
neuen Texturen - bis zur
klanglichen Entfesselung
- zusammenballen und eine
feine Differenzierung und
Dynamisierung der
Anschlagsmoglichkeiten
bestimmen dieses Werk.
Auch, wenn nur Part II
durch den Einsatz
bestimmter Tonhohen
gepragt ist (durch die
Verwendung der von Yannis
Xenakis erfundenen Sixxen
durchaus mikrotonal), so
gibt es doch unuberhorbar
abschnittsubergreifende
Kontinuitaten in Rhythmik
und Motivik, die das
ganze Werk bestimmen und
es dabei wie feine
seismische Adern
durchziehen. (Johannes
Maria Staud,

Tschaikowskys
letzte Oper - auf ein
Libretto seines Bruders
Modest nach der
Dramenvorlage des
danischen Schriftstellers
Henrik Hertz - lebt von
den poetischen Momenten
und den symbolbeladenen
Charakterportrats der
Hauptfiguren: Die junge
blinde Jolanthe wird von
ihrem Vater aus Sorge um
ihren Makel und zum
Schutz ihrer
Jungfraulichkeit und vor
den Widrigkeiten der Welt
in einen paradiesischen
Garten gesperrt. Er
befielt zu ihrem Schutz
sie um ihre Blindheit
unwissend zu lassen. Ein
Arzt warnt sehen werde
sie nur konnen wenn sie
es selbst wolle gleich
welche Angste aus der
vollstandigen Erkenntnis
der Welt erwachsen. Als
der junge Vaudemont in
ihre Abgeschiedenheit
einbricht und sich beide
ineinander verlieben
befreit er sie von ihrer
Unwissenheit erklart was
Farbe und Licht bedeuten.
Erst die Liebe zu ihm
macht sie sehend.
Die dunkle Welt
der Jolanthe zeichnet
Tschaikowsky zu Beginn
musikalisch durch eine
Introduktion
ausschliesslich fur
Blaser. Erst mit dem
Eintritt in die
unbekannte Welt der Liebe
und des Sehens verwendet
Tschaikowsky einen warmen
Streicherklang. Gerade
dadurch stiess die Oper
wohl bei Zeitgenossen auf
Verstorung. Tschaikowskys
,,Jolanthe nimmt in
seinem Opernschaffen eine
Sonderstellung ein: neben
dem glucklichen Ende
einer Apotheose des
Lichts und der Liebe mit
einem religios gepragten
Schlusschoral ist es
eines der wenigen
Buhnenwerke Tschaikowskys
ohne Bezug zur russischen
Geschichte. Der
ausgepragte Lyrismus des
Werks verweist
stattdessen auf
Tschaikowskys Nahe zur
franzosischen Kultur die
im 19. Jahrhundert einen
starken Einfluss auf
Russland hatte. Die Oper
wurde 1892 am
Mariinsky-Theater in
Sankt Petersburg als
Auftragswerk zusammen mit
seinem Ballett ,,Der
Nussknacker
uraufgefuhrt.
Nebe
n der Produktion des
Munchner
Rundfunkorchesters wurde
,,Jolanthe szenisch
erfolgreich bei den
Festspielen Baden-Baden
mit Anna Netrebko und
Piotr Beczala als
Liebespaar rehabilitiert.
Ausserhalb Deutschlands
lief die Opernraritat in
Toulouse Tokyo San
Sebastian und Monte
Carlo. Zuletzt erneut die
,,Suddeutsche Zeitung:
,,Jolanthe ist eine
Opernausgrabung die
,,wirklich zu Unrecht
vergessen ist.
Tchaikovsky's last opera
- on a libretto by the
composer's brother Modest
based on the drama by the
Danish author Henrik
Hertz - derives its
life-blood from its
poetic moments and the
symbol-laden portraits of
the leading characters:
the blind young Yolanta
is kept prisoner in a
paradisiacal garden by
her father who fears for
her purity and her
virginity and seeks to
protect her from the
adversities of the world.
To do so he orders
everyone to keep her
ignorant of the fact that
she is blind. A doctor
warns that she will only
be able to see when she
is ready to do so herself
no matter what fears
might result from a
complete experience of
the world. When the young
Vaudemont breaks into her
secluded world and the
two fall in love he frees
her from her ignorance
and explains the
significance of color and
light. It is through her
love for him that she is
finally able to see. At
the beginning of the work
Tchaikovsky depicts
Yolanta's dark world with
an introduction scored
exclusively for winds. It
is not until her
discovery of the unknown
world of love and sight
that Tchaikovsky uses a
warm string sound. This
is what many of the
composer's contemporaries
found disturbing about
the
opera.
Tchaikovsky
's Yolanta occupies a
special place in the
composer's operatic
oeuvre: for one it has a
happy ending an
apotheosis of light and
love with a religiously
stamped closing chorale;
for another it is one of
Tchaikovsky's few stage
works without any
reference to Russian
history. Instead the
work's pronounced
lyricism points to the
composer's closeness to
French culture. which
exerted a strong
influence on Russia in
the 19th
century.
The opera
was given its world
premiere at the Mariinsky
Theater in St. Petersburg
in 1892. It had been
commissioned along with
the ballet The
Nutcracker. Next to the
production by the
Munchner
Rundfunkorchester Yolanta
was also successfully
rehabilitated in a recent
staged production at the
Baden-Baden Festival with
Anna Netrebko and Piotr
Beczala as the lovers.
Outside of Germany the
operatic rarity was
performed in Toulouse
Tokyo San Sebastian and
Monte Carlo.
In
closing another quote
from the Suddeutsche
Zeitung: 'Yolanta' is an
operatic rediscovery of a
work that was truly
'wrongly forgotten'.

In der
Ara der grossen
Schlagzeugbesetzungen
habe ich fur kleine
Besetzungen geschrieben.
Dies gilt jetzt als
zukunftsweisend. Pothos
ist also gegen den
gegenwartigen
Besetzungstrend
geschrieben. Ich bin
trotzdem froh es war eine
neue Erfahrung fur mich.
Allerdings nicht zu
Anfang. Die Instrumente
in meinem Arbeitszimmer
zeigten sich stur,
unnahbar und dickkopfig.
Sie stellten sich taub
gegen musikalische
Klangstrukturierungen.
Klangfamilien, hoch /
mittel / tief,
Farbraffinessen etc.,
waren schale
Abfallprodukte einer
Instrumentenwelt, die
voller Verachtung auf
Grenzuberschreitungen
blickte. Erst als ich die
Vorstellung einer
riesigen Bibliothek
hatte, in der alle Tone,
Klange und Gerausche
feinsauberlich
eingeordnet waren und
diese Klange begannen,
ihre Grenzen zu zersetzen
und miteinander
wechselzuwirken,
eroffnete sich mir eine
neue Kategorie des
Zusammenhangens und
-wirkens: nicht ein
Strukturgedanke, sondern
die Sehnsucht. Die
Sehnsucht eines Klanges
zum nachsten, die auch
bestimmt, wie dieser
Klang zu sein hat. Der
Komponist, der Interpret,
der Horer ein Medium furs
Dazwischen. Sehnsucht hat
Charakter, zeigt
Vernunft, drangt auch zur
Materialisierung. Im
Kratylos schreibt Platon
von Pothos als einer
bestimmten Art von
Sehnsucht, die nach etwas
anderswo Seiendem und
Abwesendem (neben den
anderen Arten von Eros
und Himeros). Es ist
nicht naheliegend, wie
der Klang, der vom
Instrument kommt, aber zu
blosser schwingender Luft
sich verwandelt,
verraumlicht. Pothos,
Himeros und Eros galten
auch als Sohne des
Zephiros, des Westwindes,
des Windes aus dem
Dunkel, wo die Sonne
untergeht. Das ist fur
mich eine schone
Horhaltung, die auch
Sehnsuchtsgemeinschaften
geniessen kann, z. B. das
Durchmesseraustasten von
Anschlagen,
instrumentenubergreifende
s Spielen mit einer Hand,
das Anschlagen von
Instrumenten mit einem
anderen Instrument und am
Schluss das eigenartige
Anblasen des japanischen
Popen, das auf einem Bild
Utamaros im Mund einer
Dame zu sehen ist (ca.
1792), ein Glasspielzeug.
Wenn Sie sich beim Horen
im Suden sitzend und nach
Norden auf die Buhne
schauend vorstellen, dann
hat auch die
Instrumentenaufstellung
in einer Art Spirale, von
Ost nach West verlaufend,
den notigen fliessenden
Ausdruck von Pothos, nach
dem anderswo Seienden
oder Abwesenden. Nicolaus

Kirchengloc
ken, indische Glockchen,
Almglocken, Glockenspiel
- eine reiche Familie,
voller Bedeutungen und
Traditionen. Als Kind war
ich beeindruckt von einer
Dankeskapelle in der Nahe
meines Heimatortes
Waldkirchen. Der Dankende
hatte sich im Wald
verirrt und fand den
rettenden Ort, weil er
dem Glockenklang der
Kirche folgen konnte.
Meine Eltern wohnten
selbst einige Jahre
direkt neben der Kirche,
und damals wurde sehr
ausgiebig gelautet. Ich
selbst half beim Lauten
mit: ziehen am Seil - wie
schnell kommt der erste
Anschlag - sich zum
Bremsen ans Seil hangen -
wie schnell stoppt man
die Glocke - und die
wunderbaren Weiten des
Klanges, die
Abstrahlungshohe, der
gefahrliche Glockenstuhl,
und das Lauten als
Belastigung! Zu Hause
hiess es immer: ,,Goethe
hat schon die
Kirchenglocken gehasst!
Unsere Glocken waren in
Stimmung und Qualitat
Ergebnis eines
Glockensachverstandigen.
Es war der spatere
Passauer
Dom-Chordirigent, in
dessen Chor ich etliche
Jahre sang!Und jetzt die
,,Rohrenglocken!Sie sind
schwierig, diese Rohren,
die nur in ihrer Lange
variieren und dadurch fur
ihre Tonhohe nicht immer
bestens ausgerustet sind.
Aber sie behalten das
Glockenflair, trotz ihrer
Sperrigkeit. Gerade ihre
mystifizierende
Verschlossenheit zieht
an: das Verhaltnis von
Anschlagsmittel,
Anschlagstelle und
Klangergebnis ist nicht
immer genau vorhersehbar,
und selbst bei hochsten
Lautstarken hat man den
Eindruck, dass die Rohren
nicht alles von sich
geben. Dafur modulieren
sie sich gegenseitig
hervorragend. Der Spieler
mit seinen
Anschlagswerkzeugen steht
immer einem
eigenwilligen,
vielfaltigen Ich
gegenuber.Oft kann man
bei grosseren Besetzungen
Rohrenglocken erleben.
Ich habe mir sagen
lassen, dass es bisher
aber kein SOLO fur
Rohrenglocken gabe.Nun
laissez vibrer ist eines!
ich hoffe,
gelungen!!!(Nicolaus A.

My
composition for snare
drum forms a counter
piece to my series of
rhythmic pieces
(Darabukka for piano or
Morgenlied for large
orchestra). The dramatic
moment - tuned
instruments are treated
like rhythm instruments -
disappear entirely. The
inner contrast is
replaced by the tension
between the different
uses of the drum and a
relatively large number
of invariable performance
elements. Although the
snare drum was only
developed at the
beginning of the 19th
century, it has its roots
in an old and diverse
drum culture. The
technical aspects of this
composition are based on
various aspects of this
rich culture, both the
social customs as well as
the variety of different
performing techniques and
expressions. However, the
piece does not merely
quote - that would be
unhistorical - on the
contrary: The modern and
progressive, in so far as
I can observe this in our
social environment, is
quite evident, for as the
title of the piece tells
us the same is not the
same. (Nicolaus A. Huber,
