Bruch's
evergreen for the first
time in UrtextThanks to
the premiere performance
by Joseph Joachim and to
the release of the
printed edition in 1868,
Max Bruch's Violin
Concerto no. 1 zipped
onto the road to success
and has never left it
since. Yet from the
preface of the

edition,one can infer how
things looked like behind
the dazzling facade.
After the world premiere,
the composer struggled
for the definitive form.
He wrote 3, 4 development

celebrated virtuosi such

the solo part. And after
all this was done (see

written nothing but this

Urtext edition is based
primarily on the first

source and the autograph,
what is supremely
interesting is a solo
part with entries by
Joachim and Bruch. It
confirms how intensively
the two men collaborated
on honing the final form
of the work.

With the
publication of Volume 11
in November 1999, Werner
Breigs fundamentally new
scholarly concept of
Richard Wagners complete
letters begins to make
itself felt more
strongly. The
meticulously annotated
volumes are illustrated
with facsimiles and
little known photos.
Further enhancing the
value of this edition are
a number of letters,
which were hitherto
practically unavailable
and are published here
for the first time. The
commentaries are based on
many previously
unpublished
documents.
Concerning Volume 10
(published one year later
than Volume 11) we have
obtained the following
fax by the English Wagner
expert Stewart Spencer,
who wittily praises
Werner Breig's
fundamental new
concept:
There is a
general problem of
reviewing such
magnificent volumes. They
are the yardstick by
which all other writings
on Wagner will be judged.
It is like sending
someone to inspect the
standard metre rule in
Paris and asking them to
review it. All one can
say is that it exists and
that it is in a class of
its own. I'd like to
congratulate you on its
publication and thank you
most warmly for picking
up this edition. (Stewart
Spencer, October 11,
2000)
Im Sommer
1861 kommt es zur
endgultigen Trennung des
Ehepaars Wagner. Nach
Auflosung des gemeinsamen
Pariser Haushalts lasst
sich Minna Wagner in
Dresden nieder wo sie
ihre letzten Lebensjahre
verbringt. All dies ist
in den Briefen
detailliert nachzulesen
daneben aber auch die
kunstlerischen Erfolge
des Jahres: In Frankfurt
dirigiert Wagner zum
ersten Mal seinen
,,Lohengrin (zwolf Jahre
nach der Urauffuhrung!)
in Leipzig stellt er die
,,Meistersinger-Ouverture
vor und in Wien
veranstaltet er Konzerte
mit Szenen aus seinen
Opern. Biographisch
einschneidend sind die
vollstandige Amnestierung
- nun darf Wagner auch
wieder den Boden seiner
sachsischen Heimat
betreten - sowie die
weitere Entfremdung und
schliesslich die
endgultige Trennung von
seiner Ehefrau Minna.

My
composition for snare
drum forms a counter
piece to my series of
rhythmic pieces
(Darabukka for piano or
Morgenlied for large
orchestra). The dramatic
moment - tuned
instruments are treated
like rhythm instruments -
disappear entirely. The
inner contrast is
replaced by the tension
between the different
uses of the drum and a
relatively large number
of invariable performance
elements. Although the
snare drum was only
developed at the
beginning of the 19th
century, it has its roots
in an old and diverse
drum culture. The
technical aspects of this
composition are based on
various aspects of this
rich culture, both the
social customs as well as
the variety of different
performing techniques and
expressions. However, the
piece does not merely
quote - that would be
unhistorical - on the
contrary: The modern and
progressive, in so far as
I can observe this in our
social environment, is
quite evident, for as the
title of the piece tells
us the same is not the
same. (Nicolaus A. Huber,

This exiting
6/8 piece conveys the
daring adventures of
voyages during the Viking
Age, sailing aboard Norse
longships in the Baltic
Sea. This heavy, accented
melody uses frequent
doubling between sections
for a full hearty sound
that rings out like the
songs of the sailors and
Vikings as they navigated
the high seas. The
bowings and articulations
throughout this piece
create energy and drama,
with Violin I, Bass, and
Cello venturing briefly
out of first position.
Like the push and pull of

players will feel the

exploring new worlds of
