ish comments: Given
that Granados' creative
periods continually
overlap, in order to
organize the works of
Granados' Juvenilia this
edition has grouped the
works according to their
chronological-biographica
l order and/or to their
style. The majority of
the works in this section
were composed between his
student years in Paris
(1887-1889) and the
founding of the Academia
Granados in 1901. Many of
these works are quite
similar to one another
being sketches and brief
compositions
characterised by an
unfocused formal
structure, harmonic
ambiguity and a tendency
to place the final
cadence on the dominant.
The fact that many of
these works were not
highly developed would
tend to suggest that they
were never revised by the
composer. Typical of a
young composer focusing
on his own personal
inspirations, Granados
concentrated on themes of
nature, oriental motifs,
exploration of emotions,
frequently making use of
the salonnier (salon)
genre.
Comentarios del
Espanol: Para
organizar la edicion de
los apartados
correspondientes a las
obras juveniles de
Granados se ha partido de
los criterios cronologico
- biograficos y de estilo
dado que, aunque los
periodos creativos del
compositor se mezclan
continuamente, la mayor
parte de las obras de
este apartado fueron
escritas entre su etapa
de estudiante en Paris y
la fundacion de la
Academia Granados en 1901
y, a pesar de presentar
una gran heterogeneidad
entre ellas, se trata de
esbozos y breves
composiciones
caracterizadas por una
estructura formal poco
destacada, marcada por la
ambiguedad armonica y por
una tendencia a colocar
la cadencia final en la
dominante. La poca
elaboracion de la mayor
parte de estas obras
delata que probablemente
ni tan siquiera fueran
revisadas posteriormente
por el compositor. Todas
ellas son propias de un
compositor joven y
responden a los temas
propios del momento como
son la naturaleza, los
motivos orientales o la
exaltacion de los
sentimientos. El recurso
al genero salonnier
(obras de salon) y las
dedicatorias a senoras y
senoritas son tambien
recursos propios de la
epoca.

Thomas
Moore (17791852) was an
Irish poet, singer,
songwriter and
entertainer. In his poem,
On Music, Moore
emphasizes the power that
music has in our lives
and the ability it has to
evoke memories and
feelings from the past.
Music transcends that
which can be spoken or
felt. The beauty of
making music together is
to establish meaningful
connections with others
and to share a common
language through song. We
are reminded, however,
that relationships with
each other can be fluid
or unstable, but as the
words of the poem remind
us, music will not
betray. No matter the
experiences that we face,
the relationships that we
foster, or the memories
that we create, music
will always be there for
us in times of need and
in times of celebration.

your life? On Music

life unblest we rove,
Losing all that made life
dear, Should some notes
we used to love, In days
of boyhood, meet our ear,
Oh! how welcome breathes
the strain! Wakening
thoughts that long have
slept, Kindling former
smiles again In faded
eyes that long have wept.
Like the gale, that sighs
along Beds of oriental
flowers, Is the grateful
breath of song, That once
was heard in happier
hours. Filld with balm
the gale sighs on, Though
the flowers have sunk in
death; So, when pleasures

lives in Musics breath.
Music, oh, how faint, how
weak, Language fades
before thy spell! Why
should Feeling ever

breathe her soul so well?

Klezmer is van
oorsprong de benaming
voor de muziek van de
Jiddisch sprekende joden
in met name Oost-Europa.
De klezmermuzikanten
speelden onder meer
dansmuziek op bruiloften.
Van oudsher werden
voornamelijk
snaarinstrumenten alsde
viool gebruikt. Later (na
ca. 1900) kwam daar
vooral de klarinet als
melodie-instrument bij.
In de klezmermuziek zijn
naast veel
Balkan-invloeden ook
oriëntaalse en
zigeunerinvloeden terug
te vinden. In deze stijl
componeerde Jacobde Haan
Klezmania, waarin hij het
bekende Hebreeuwse lied
Hava Nagila
verwerkte.

Diptyque
is the French word for
“diptych,â€
meaning a hinged two-part
image. The first section
of this two-part musical
painting has an Oriental
feel, with characteristic
pentatonic melody lines
and chords. The second
section is a cheerful
Saltarello dance that
brings out the subtleties
of the woodwind section.
A juxtaposition of
Eastern and Western
music, Diptyque
reminds listeners of the
power of music in
transcending all
cultural, religious and
political
boundaries.
Dip

woord voor
‘diptychon’,
een ander woord voor
tweeluik. Het eerste deel
van dit muzikale beeld
heeft oriëntaalse
flair. Karakteristieke
pentatonische
melodielijnen en
akkoorden voeren de
boventoon. Hettweede deel
vormt qua stijl en
karakter een groot
contrast, het is een
levendige saltarello
waarin de kwaliteiten van
de houtblazers goed naar
voren komen. En de
muzikale boodschap? Deze
prachtige combinatie van
oosterse en
westersemuziek neemt alle
culturele, religieuze en
politieke grenzen
weg!

zweiteiligen
musikalischen Bildes hat
ein orientalisches Flair
mit charakteristischen
pentatonischen
Melodielinien und
Akkorden. Im Kontrast
dazu ist der zweite Teil
ein heiterer
Saltarello-Tanz, der die
Finessen der
Holzbläser hervorhebt.
Die Botschaft dieser
Nebeneinanderstellung
östlicher und
westlicher Musik ist,
dass die Musik alle
kulturellen,
religiösen oder
politischen Grenzen
aufzuheben
vermag!
Diptyque è un
titolo perfetto per
questa composizione in
due parti. La prima, dal
carattere maestoso,
s’ispira ad
un’antica canzone
per bambini chiamata
Akkatobai, originaria
della citt giapponese di
Nagasaki. Il secondo
affresco offre un vivace
contrasto in termini di
stile e tempi. Gaio e
luminoso, esso riflette
l’isola di Kyushu
nel sud del Giappone. La
giustapposizione delle
due parti di questo
dittico vuole
rappresentare
l’intesa tra
oriente e occidente,
evocando al contempo
l’universalit
della musica.
